An advanced one-lens solution, the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM Lens Review & Specsis a Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM Lens Review & SpecsL-series zoom covering wide-angle to short-telephoto focal lengths and featuring a constant f/4 maximum aperture. The version II of this popular lens sports a redeveloped optical design, which includes four aspherical elements to significantly reduce distortion and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range for great sharpness and accurate subject rendering. Individual elements feature an Air Sphere Coating, too, to suppress flare and ghosting for greater contrast and color accuracy in harsh lighting conditions.

Complementing the refined optics, this 24-105mm f/4 also sports a ring-type USM and internal focusing mechanism to enable quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance, as well as full-time manual focus override. A four-stop-effective Image Stabilizer is also used to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Additionally, this lens is weather-sealed and has a protective fluorine coating on the exposed elements for use in trying environmental conditions.

Standard wide-angle to telephoto zoom lens is designed for use with full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 38.4-168mm equivalent focal length range.

Constant f/4 maximum aperture maintains consistent illumination throughout the zoom range.

Four glass-molded aspherical elements, including one large-diameter double-sided glass-molded lens, help to minimize distortions and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to maintain edge-to-edge sharpness and illumination.

An Air Sphere Coating has been applied to individual elements to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting for greater contrast and color fidelity in strong lighting conditions.

An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.

A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing design, optimized focusing algorithms, and a high-speed CPU, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.

Rounded ten-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

As a member of the esteemed L-series, this lens has a weather-resistant design that protects against dust and moisture to enable its use in inclement conditions. Additionally, fluorine coatings have also been applied to the front and rear lens elements for further protection against fingerprints and smudging.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. if i order this the 31st when its released will it take longer then preordering to ship

A: At this time, we estimate that the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM Lens will begin shipping Sat, Dec 10. Keep in mind that this is only an estimate, and release dates can be delayed.

Q: 2. Is this lens made of plastic or metal?

A: This lens is mostly plastic with a metal mount

Q: 3. Most importantly is this lens going any better than its predecessor? As we all know the 24-105 is not a very sought after lens, mine came with my camera in a kit and has been stored in a case from the day i got it.

A: According to Canon, the newer version should be sharper, especially at the edges. And, it should be less prone to lens flare and internal reflections.

Q: 4. Will this lens be a true f4 throughout as it's well known that the mk1 version loses light when zoomed?

A: The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM Lens should maintain a constant f/4 maximum aperture for consistent performance and light transmission throughout the lens' zoom range.

Q: 5. Has anyone experienced a problem of back focusing? Some reviews says this is a big problem

A: Yes, I AFMA'd mine (using FoCal) to -4 for the wide end, and -8 for the telephoto end. Not huge values, but once I entered these, my lens was extremely accurate and the images naturally appeared sharper.

Q: 6. The description says this lens focuses internally but what about zooming, is that also internal?

A: Hi James, this lens extends out when it zooms. It has a zoom lock to keep it from extending when it is in your bag or carrying it around. This is a very good lens and I would definitely recommend it. I bought the first version several years ago and I use it as my walk around lens. While I loved the sharpness and color of version 1, the new version is even better. Hope this helps. Dallas W.

Q: 7. Will this lens work of a canon 90D?

A: Yes, the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM Lens would be fully compatible for use with the Canon EOS 90D DSLR camera. As the Canon EOS 90D DSLR camera uses the smaller APS-C sensor which has a 1.6x crop factor, the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM Lens would be the equivalent of a 38.4-168mm f/4 lens used on a camera body with a full-frame sensor..

Q: 8. Do you think they fixed the problem with the zoom connection breaking and making the lens useless in a short time. I already have a paper weight to remind me not to buy another one.

A: this lens has a zoom lock

Q: 9. I'm not sure if there is a right answer to my question, especially since we don't know what this new lens is capable of. I have the 24-105i and 100-400ii for my 6d. I'm an amateur photographer and I shoot everything, although I am looking for something with amazing bokeh and low light and versatile. I've been contemplating the 24-70ii and 70-200 2.8is. I know two totaly different lens and hopefully one day I can afford both. My question is, with this new lens, should I wait for this lens to come out and upgrade from my 24-105i? Should I get the 24-70 which everybody raves about as a very versatile lens, although, i've also read that some people feel it's not any better than the 24-105 (which has a longer zoom and has is? This is also, where I'm curious if this new 24-105ii would be the way to go? Finally, even though I already have the 100-400 (mainly just bought it for wildlife), would it be a not so wise decision to get the 70-200? The f2.8 aspect would be a nice thing to have and I haven't read a single bad thing about that lens.

A: I have the mark I 24-105, and the 24-70 mark II. I am NOT overwhelmed by the 24-70 II to be honest. Is it sharper? Yes, but if you use Canon's digital image optimizer, or DXO's software, your 24-105 suddenly gets amazingly sharp! The extra 35mm and IS seriously trumps the 24-70's 2.8, in my opinion. I find that I typically shoot at f/4 and f/5.6 in most circumstances, so f/2.8 just doesn't warrant $600-800 more out of pocket. Just last night, I was trying to shoot Halloween scenes, and the lack of IS was really hurting me. If I had my 24-105...piece of cake!

Q: 10. Anyone tried putting on the original EW-83H hood from the Mark I lens for the Mark II?

A: It works fine.

[f/4] I was initially planing to purchase the 24-70mm/f2.8 II lens but ended up buying the 105mm zoom due to the price difference. After using it for a few months I can say that I am satisfied with its performance. I own a 24-70mm/f2.8 purchased in 2010 and the difference in performance and quality is HUGE!

[f/4] I'm finding that this is an ideal utility lens. The range is very good for any number of subjects. It's weight and size make it easy to handle on the camera. With the stabilization I get sharp pictures hand-held. This is really a very high quality, comfortable lens.

[f/4] I've been wanting this lens for a long time, I have the earlier version the Canon USM 24-105mm I, and it's a pretty good lens, the USM II is a tad bit better and a little sharper than it's predecessor IMO, I have the USM I on my Canon 80D and the USM II on my 90D.

The focal range is an improvement and the sharpness is better, while it may not be stellar overall I love this lens and will gladly use it from portrait to sports this will be my go to lens.

[f/22] Super all-purpose lens for stills and video. Read a lot of reviews and this one was at the top of a lot, so I ordered it with my new Canon 5D Mark IV. Have not been disappointed in its performance so far. Only downside is my last lens had a little more zoom and this one doesn’t - but I’m gonna get a marked out zoom lens just for still later. In the mean time, this sucker does the trick and has been great.

[Yes] I waited for this to arrive, since it was backordered. But it was well worth the wait. Sharp and smooth zooming. And it used the same 77mm filters that I had.

[24 to 105mm] This Canon 24-105mm is a must-have 'desert island' lens for anyone, no matter how big of an imprint you are running with primes, etc. This lens (like the legendary 17-55mm) is one of those tried and true lenses that just gets the job done, anytime, anywhere.

[Yes] Recently took this lens paired with the 90D to the Doodad Farm for a day of music and I was very pleased with the results. The 24-105mm makes a great landscape, or just walking about lens. Great overall lens.
