The Tiffen 52mm 85B Color Filterhelps to decrease the color temperature from 5500 to 3200K, allowing the use of tungsten-balanced film in daylight conditions. The warming effect of this filter requires a 0.6-stop increase in exposure for normal results.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. how many stops total compensation does this require? .9nd +the 85

A: It is a 3 stop filter. You would need 3 stops of compensation. The 3 stop rating on the filter factors in the 85B filtering properties.

Q: 2. So you can put all 3 ND on each other and make a 9 stop ND filter? Will these all stack with each other with a step up ring on? I have a 55mm thread filter lense I want to use this for to but I want them to stack with all of my lenses with step down rings

A: You can stack all three of these filters to create 9 stops, however by doing so you are increasing barrel length. This may result in vignetting as your camera may see the filter rings when shooting at wide focal lengths. A step up ring from 55 to 72mm may help with this, a step down ring would have the opposite effect and result in severe vignetting.

Q: 3. Will this ND Filter work well with the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 II Lens? I am unsure if I will get the notorious X-Pattern when blocking the light at 8-Stops, because as mentioned it is a very wide lens (11-16mm). Does anyone have experience? I would buy the lens and the filter together, it seems a good bundle for land- and seascape.

A: Thin version, not for the x pattern, but because the thick version comes into view on wide angle lenses 24mm.

Q: 4. Will these filters (52 mm) fit a Nikon 5300 DSLR?

A: As long as you're using a lens that has a 52mm filter thread size, this kit will work with the Nikon 5300. I have the Nikon 18-55mm lens that I use this kit with. I also have a Nikon 55-300 lens that uses 58mm filters so I have two different sizes for my Nikon lenses I use with my 5300. Most lenses have a filter size indicator on the bottom side so you know what size to use. Look for a circle with a diagonal line through it then a number, which is the mm size of the filter threads. For instance, 52.

Q: 5. Which Day for Night Lens(es) fit a Canon Zoom EF-S 17-85mm Lens?

A: The Canon 17-85mm lens has a 67mm filter thread, so you would need the Tiffen 67mm Day for Night Lavender-Blue Cooling Filter (B&H # TICDFN67).

Q: 6. Should this filter have a physical hard stop at both ends? I have a different brand variable ND filter on my 50mm, and the adjustment ring will stop at both ends of the spectrum, where this one just keeps spinning with not stop. Is that a defect or how it's made? I find it annoying to not have the tactile 'stop', so to speak, of open or closed filter. Thanks for your help!

A: Adam,I have one and it does not have a stop, which is annoying. On the outside ring of the filter are Min - Max calibrations, which are not of much help. I just eyeball it until I have the scene, or photo exposed how I want it. This lack of a hard stop also caused me to unscrew the filter from my lens when I was just starting out with it. The last inconvenience is the lack of a lens cap to go over it which is a hassle when you are running and gunning. That said, the filter is a big help for quick lighting adjustments... once you get used to it.

Q: 7. What is the outer diameter to each thread size? For example, the 72mm thread has an outer diameter of 85mm.

A: The outer diameter of the Tiffen 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter is 88mm, plus or minus a few µm.

Q: 8. I've been searching everywhere for a variable ND filter for my Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. Is this the one that will fit? It fits on the end of the lens right? I have an Olympus 40-150mm 1:4-5.6. then it has a circle with a line through it and a 58 by it. thats the filter thread, right? so if i have an olympus 17mm 1:2.8 pancake lens with a circle with a line through it and a 37 next to it, thats a 37 thread so I'll need this one, right: Polaroid 37mm Neutral Density Fader Filter

A: That is correct. The Olympus 40-150mm f/4-5.6 accepts 58mm filters, and the Olympus 17mm f/2.8 will accept the 37mm filter.

Q: 9. Will this 9mm thick ND filter work on Nikon 10-24mm Wide angle or is there a thin version? Thanks in advance, Terry

A: The Tiffen 77mm Variable Netural Density Filter may cause vignette on a Nikon 10-24mm lens. B+W makes a thinner profile variable ND filter with a larger filter ring that will be better for use with a wide angle lens: http://bhpho.to/OH7mr4

Q: 10. how do these tiffen lens stack up to Coken filters?

A: Cokin are square or rectangular and you need to use a filter holder and adapter ring. These you just screw on the lens, not need to carry extra parts. The advantage of the Cokin is if you want to stack many filters and you are using a wide angle lens, there is less chance of vignetting with the Cokin in that situation. Also in the Cokin if you use a graduated neutral density you can raise and lower the filter to place the horizon anywhere. With a round filter if you get a graduated ND the horizon will always be in the center.

[52 mm] This is a necessary filter to shoot Tungsten film in daylight. I had a roll of 120 Cinestill800t film that I was shooting in both tungsten interiors and daylight exteriors so I wanted a filter to neutralize some of the color shifts shooting Tungsten in daylight exterior brings.

While shooting tungsten film in daylight settings is able to be color corrected in post, that does equal time + work. Having an 85 filter definitely will speed up the post work flow.

In regards to the different levels of 85 filter, B works great for me. I'm sure the other levels are to taste, but using 85 I didn't wish it were warmer or cooler after seeing the images I got back.

[0.1 lb] Very useful color correction filters for when you MUST use tungsten film outdoors. I use this primarily with Super 8 and 16mm cameras when taking Kodak Vision3 500T outdoors. I highly recommend an ND filter in these scenarios as well.
