Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What is the most common way to power these on location?

A: A good way to power these monolights on location when an AC outlet is not available is with the use of the Profoto Batpac, B&H # PRBPP. Please see the image below for reference.

Q: 2. At what power levels is high speed sync available at in these heads? Is it like the B1 where you have to be at least 7.0 for high speed sync? Or can you use high speed sync at lower power levels?

A: It has a slightly expanded range starting at 6.0.

Q: 3. Can I use this moonlight to optically trigger a (slave) Canon 600EX-RT flash?

A: The Canon 600 EX-RT uses a proprietary optical signal that this unit can not control or trigger.

Q: 4. Would this cable work with a Profoto D1 1000w Air Monolight?

A: yes!

Q: 5. I saw the profoto d2 custom picture . Is the handle broken ?

A: No. That is the design on the unique strobe unit.

Q: 6. This cable would work with the Profoto D1 500 Air?

A: Yes this cable is compatible with the Profoto D1 Air 500.

Q: 7. What portable battery can I use. I shoot mostly on location

A: I used the MiniVagabond, it worked fine but there are limitations if you want to use HSS. Will require you to shoot in low power mode which results in a slower power recycle.

Q: 8. Can these be used with Pocket Wizards?

A: Yes they can. There is a mini phone plug on the bottom and can be used with any remote trigger or wired. You will lose TTL, HSS and remote control ability by using a Pocket Wizard.

Q: 9. Are Pocketwizard Plus II Transceivers compatible with these lights?

A: Yes, they are compatible.

Q: 10. Is the power cable permanently attached to the light or is it exchangeable ? I am back and forth between the US and Europe and would like to be able to use the lights by switching out the cables when traveling back and forth.

A: Hi Darnell, the cable is changable and not afixed to the lights. We use them all over the world and have different cables for different regions. They're great lights!

[16' (5 m)] I have had the opportunity to use the D1 before buying the D2s. Their performance did not disappoint! Solid operations and output!
They are a little pricey but worth every penny to me! During one 4 hour photo shoot they handled over 6,000 images with no misfires.

[16' (5 m)] I've been using another brand of strobe lights for the last 5 years and they're great, nothing bad to say about quality for the price I paid but I'm blown away by Profoto and so happy I finally upgraded. It costs a lot, especially when you need several heads, but it's worth it. The recycling rate, the quality of the light and capabilities and solid design is incredible. I'm in love with my new profoto lights!! Can't wait to try the freeze action!

[16' (5 m)] I am a full time Studio and Location photographer. Currently own multiple sets of B1 and B2 battery operated Profoto lights for location shooting. The HSS feature with the additional 1 full stop over B1 and 2 stops over B2 made these lights appealing for the studio and for demanding location shots. We are now able to shoot in bright daylight at 1/8,000th second at f2.8 and completely over-power the sun with deep blue skies. Also the Freeze mode is great for freezing water droplets in mid air and other high speed action shots. The one drawback of the D2 Lights are that they are VERY top heavy, even more so than the B1's so you need really heavy duty light stands, and if shooting on location in any kind of breeze, you will need lots of sandbags. Build quality is the top-of-the-line Profoto quality we have all come to expect. Lights are easy to use, menu system is intuitive, software is easy to update via USB, and all our Profoto RFi modifiers, softboxes, beautydishes, etc all work across the D2/B1/B2 range

[16' (5 m)] I've used these lights before, and finally purchased my own. They've been great to travel with, and are super intuitive. I've been using the air remote with them, and it's been seamless. The case is great, although I will likely get a hardcase if I'm traveling with them.

[Japan] Good equipment is indicative of working so well that I can completely focus on the image. If you've ever fought the equipment to make it work, then you know there's nothing more loathsome than subpar gear. In the long run it ends up costing more money than it's worth - lost productivity and business. Then there's the sad fact of buying something twice, and the realization that I would have saved money buying the more expensive item right from the start.

That said, the D2's are fantastic and a wonderful compliment to my D1's. The TTL feature of these lights with the Profoto Air remote is incredible. The exposures were spot on in testing as I ran through the apertures; no more fumbling around with goldilocks adjustments of too hot, too cold, just right. Complete freedom to focus on the image and composition is worth the cost of admission of the D2's.

[Japan] A great light. I use these in a school auditorium to photograph award presentations and play rehearsals. It provides superior light to the lights in the auditorium.

[16' (5 m)] Solid light. So powerful and easy to use. As long as you have a power source you are all set. Works well for big jobs or in small studio. I also used on location with an appropriate extension cord.

[Japan] I had three Profoto B1 strobes and I decided that I could use one more. However, I chose the D2 because most of the more complex shoots were in studio. The B1's would still take care of my outdoor needs. The D2 has shown itself to be worthy. It has one more stop than the B1's and a better setup menu. There have been only a few occasions when I used the last stop but it's nice to have. I decided that I like the D2 a lot and bought a second one. Now I can use 3 strobes on the subject and 2 to drive the background full white.
