The DB-1 is a simple passive direct box that offers clean and reliable performance. It can be used for nearly any instrument or signal source, from electric bass, keyboards and drum machines to sub-mixers and external speaker outputs.

The DB-1 preserves the "punch" and clarity of a sound that is often lost when placing a microphone in front of a speaker, while eliminating the leakage, distortion and coloration. The signal delivered to the P.A. or studio mixer is crisp and clean - a vital element in retaining the full depth and sound of such current equipment as FM synthesizers and digital drum machines.

The DB-1 may be inserted into the signal path at virtually any stage. For instance, a bass guitar signal can be "taken direct" for a clean, natural tone, from a preamplifier or line output for a punchier or "equalized" sound, or from the speaker output of the amplifier if a dirtier "edge" is desired.

Built for the road, but equally at home in the recording studio, the DB-1 is housed in a rugged 16-gauge steel and aluminum "Uni-box" construction enclosure. The uniquely slotted side channels allow for stacking on top or strapping side-to-side of virtually any number of Pro Co Monoface devices using the Uni-box construction.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. This product description shows the MK3 version with Jensen transformers - is this accurate?

A: Yes - this product offers Jensen transformers.

Q: 2. There are two versions of the DB24: a) Ground/Lift on each channel; b) Ground/Lift and Mono/Stereo. Which is this? Thanks.

A: THis does include the ground lift switches

Q: 3. What is the purpose of the battery power?

A: The purpose of the 9v battery is to cater to customers that may not have access to external power or phantom power.

Q: 4. It seems that this device Input is XLR, does it means that it is a mono input only? no stereo input?

A: This device is mono input only.

Q: 5. How effective is this on a vocal condenser mic? I want to put this mute switch in line between the mic and an affects processor which will supply phantom power.

A: It works quite well. I use a Shure SM35 headset mic when playing my electric upright and use this to kill my mic when I'm not singing. It works great with external phantom power. It does suck batteries, though, if you have it off a good bit. I go through a 9v Duracell Quantum battery every 1.5 gigs. However, when the power dies, it defaults to the mic being on, so you don't lose your mic in mid-set if the battery dies. If you're using a powered pedalboard or can run from the wall wart, you'll be fine. Switching is quiet, so you don't even notice when you turn the mic on and off. Overall, it's a great pedal and I use it every week.

Q: 6. Will it convert RCA input signal of an active subwoofer to balanced xlr inputs?

A: If you are referring to the line level pass-thru on a powered sub, or RCA line outs from a receiver or pre-amp to XLR ins on a sub, then yes. You do not want to run a powered signal through this device, just line-level.

Q: 7. what cables do I need to operate a direct box?

A: You will need an XLR microphone cable to connect to your mixing board and an instrument cable with 1/4 inch connectors to connect your instrument.

Q: 8. Does this version send a beep through the audio output when it's in pairing mode/when it loses signal with the device? The first version did, hoping this one solved that.

A: No, the Radial Engineering BT-PRO V2 Stereo Bluetooth Direct Box does not send any beep or chime sounds through the audio output when it is in pairing mode or if it loses Bluetooth signal with the device it is connected to.

Q: 9. does this unit provide phantom power to condenser microphones?

A: The ART Direct X is not designed for microphone input and will not provide phantom power.

Q: 10. Is this used for connecting consumer grade line level signal -10dBV gear to pro grade line level signal +4dBu gear?

A: Although the dbx DJdi 2-Channel Passive Direct Box's continuously variable input signal attenuator can accommodate a wide range of signal levels, it is not specifically designed for connecting consumer level products to professional gear. The main function of the DJdi is accepting unbalanced input signals and converting them to balanced output signals, and functions best in standard DI applications such as sending a guitar signal to a mixer.

[1.6 lb] built like a tank, I've used these for years with no problems whatsoever. I've had nicer direct boxes with more buttons/functions, but always come bac to these for the simplicity and reliability

[Standard DI] Works perfectly for patching an i-pod and/or laptop into pro sound systems in theaters with great results. Plus the added bonus of stereo output! Must have for any sound F/X playback or music streaming in theater settings. Build is tough and durable... absolutely no 'chince'-factor!

[1.6 lb] I wrote a review earlier for this product, that it worked very well in removing noise from a setup plugging a mixer into a noisy church building system. I recently found another, unexpected use for this item. I also play guitar in a band. Those out there who may play an electric guitar with single coil pickups know that these instruments are subject to noise. My practice space has got some pretty noisy electrical wiring (mainly from multiple light dimmers), and I have always had problems with noise when playing my single-coil-equiped Stratocaster. I have done several things to reduce the noise, with variable amounts of success. The other day while playing, and experiencing a noisy condition, I had the idea of using this interface between the guitar and amp. Bingo! Quiet! Hard to believe, and it doesn't color the tone, either (not that I could notice, anyway). If guitar players get wind of this, sales of this product should skyrocket! (funny they don't advertise this -- Pro-Co makes guitar effects, notably the Rat overdrive pedal) At any rate, I will be including this from now on as part of my regular guitar setup.

[1.6 lb] I needed to connect a sub-mixer into the house system at a church for a special program. When I plugged the mixer into the sytem I got a huge amount of static and HF noise. When I turned on the mixer I got a local radio station broadcasting a basketball game! I inserted the AV1 and everything went away but some 60 cycle hum. Flipped the handy ground lift switch and silence. Zero noise! The difference was amazing, beyond my expectations. I highly recommend this product!

[Solid-State] I purchased this nifty piece of audio equipment after I saw it used by AV pros. I do a lot of Powerpoint presentations that include video clips. Sometimes the audio in the clips is too low to hear, which makes them worthless. This unit boosts the sound level up to normal levels, saving the day. What a wonderful life saver. Worth every penny.

[Passive] The AV 1 Audio/Video High to Low Impedance interface by Pro-Co Sound is an invaluable tool for an facility that uses computer projectors and live sound. We have three in-house PA systems where various groups meet. Typically, images are projected from a laptop to a large screen. The AV 1 provides a quick, quiet connection between the computer or projector and allows us to pump the sound directly through the house system. Due to the multiple sets of inputs, it can be connected to a variety of sources without special adapters. The AV-1 also doubles as a direct boxes for plug-acoustic instruments. I recommend it highly.

[Passive] I had some issues connecting my computer to play through my Mackie loudspeaker but it seemed to work (with some minor feedback irritations and sound issues). I decided to look for a better solution and found the iFace...all I can say is WOW! This little unit it built for the pros and makes my computer sound like one! It's a solid unit and works flawlessly. Pro-Co's tech support was excellent in helping me find the right solution to my issues as I don't think I would have found it any other way. It's a great unit backed by a great company and worth every penny!

[+46 dBv] I use this cable to connect our show audio computer to the sound board. Great sound quality and takes the abuse of plugging and un-plugging constantly moving from the tech table to the booth.

[Yes] I've had the Pro-Co Sound DB-1 for only a couple of weeks, so I can't speak to its durability except to say that it's built quite sturdily. Time will tell. But so far it's doing exactly what I hoped it would do -- improve my sound dramatically. I play bass in my church. The sound booth and mixing board are a long way from the stage and the unbalanced signal from my instrument cable was degrading by the time it reached its destination. The DB-1 is a passive direct box that converts the unbalanced signal from my bass to a balanced one. The minute I plugged into it my sound became much punchier and crisper. The occasional pops and crackles that had plagued my sound before all but disappeared and were replaced with a much cleaner and more consistent tone. I'd never used a direct box before. Now I'm wondering what took me so long. The DB-1 was recommended to me over other brands by the sound techs from our local association. It is simple to use: Just connect the cables, flip a switch and play. I am currently plugging into the DB-1 and then directly into the house mix. But the DB-1 also includes a parallel signal output that will allow me to continue connecting to the main board via an XLR cable, while connecting a second TS cable to amplifier. I am considering going that route and connecting to a small amp for use as a monitor (I currently have a piano player located between me and the side-fill monitor I've been using). Again, I've only had this box for two weeks. But so far I'm thrilled with the results and can't imagine playing without one. No downside so far. Thanks Pro Co, and thumbs-up for a great product.
