Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is there any advantage to using this fethead when I already have my ntg3 connected to the nice preamps of a mixpre-d?

A: You will be able to use significantly less gain.

Q: 2. Will the Sony ECM-44B - Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone work with the FetHead Phantom?

A: Sorry, I just don't know.

Q: 3. I know there doesn't seem to be any way to turn off the phantom pass through. Can you use this on dynamic mics like the Shure SM7b without any problem? Thanks.

A: The FetHead Phantom is only designed for condenser mics. The standard FetHead is designed specifically for dynamics such as the SM7B and ribbon mics as well.

Q: 4. I have a Sennheiser MKH 416 and I didn't know the Sennhieser wireless plug SKP-100 doesn't have phantom power. Would this help give my microphone phantom power for wireless use? Or am I stuck investing in a SKP-500 for $499 USD?

A: You could try using a more inexpensive wireless system that provides phantom power as well, like the Xvive U3C. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1484388-REG/xvive_audio_u3c_set_u3c_wireless_2_4_ghz.html?sts=pi&pim=Y

Q: 5. Hello,According to Sure all of their dynamic microphones are unaffected and will not cause damage or cause poor performance if phantom power is used. Also other sources state if a dynamic mic is newer and or balanced it can be used with phantom power. I have both dynamic (Sure) and condenser mics. Will a dynamic mic damage the Fethead Phantom or will it cause poor audio performance while used with dynamic mics? Thank you and have a great day,McCoy

A: As you know the Fethead Phantom passes phantom power through to the microphone after it uses a portion of it for its own operation. I oubt that a dynamic microphone will damage the Fethead Phantom. However, the impedance of the Fethead Phantom I believe is different than the standard Fethead as it was designed for low impedance condenser mics. The regular Fethead has an impedance of 22K ohm whereas the Phantom version is lower (I believe around 1K). So if you are using a high impedance dynamic mic with the Fethead Phantom the audio performance may be affected. However, a competitor of the Fethead, the Cloudlifter is around 3K, considerably lower than the regular Fethead. I purchased the Phantom version for use with condenser mic and have a different product for my dynamic mics. But I would not be concerned to try Fethead Phantom with my dynamic mics. One issue I had with the Phantom (a few others have reported it as well) is that with one of my condenser mics (none of the others) it was picking up signals from a local radio station. I spent a considerable amount of time trying to discover why this was happening as normally that was not an issue with that mic. I ended up adding a Sescom inline RF filter (SES-Inline-EMCM) at the end of the XLR cable before it goes into the mixer. This worked very well and eliminated all the RF signal. And in fact I found I could attach the Fethead Phantom to the Sescom adapter without any issues. Normally Triton recommends that the Fethead is attached directly to the mic connector. I hope the above helps.

Q: 6. I am considering to order a FetHead for my dynamic mic and wondering if there will be any sound or gain difference between 1) when plugging the FetHead into my mixer/recorder(Zoom F4) first and then plugging the XLR cable to the mic and 2) when plugging the cable into my Zoom F4 first and then plugging the FetHead into my mic? I am not sure if plugging the FetHead into the mixer/recorder first is even possible or not because all the YouTube reviewers use their FetHeads directly on their mics.

A: if you plug in the fathead at your mixer, you would be amplifying the noise level from your cable run as well as your mic level. The fatheads use is to get it as close to your micrphone as possible, prior to your cable run. If youre simply trying to boost gain on a short , noiseless cable run, either end is fine I suppose.

Q: 7. Regular vs phantom amplification level. The regular claims 27db of amp and the phantom says 18db. Does the regular actually have stronger amplification? I heard from testers that the regular only boosts about 20db in reality is that true? If I get the phantom pass one will it amplify less?

A: I use a regular Fethead and it delivers a boost of about 20 db. I use it often with my Zoom and Tascam small recorders and it does a great job of boosting gain-hungry mics such as SM7B and RE20. Hope this helps.

Q: 8. Works whit beta 87?

A: This would work with a Shure Beta87a.

Q: 9. I plan to use this with an h4n zoom or h5 zoom or a tascam 60d , which fethead should I get, there is an in line and fathead regular or fethead phantom? please kindly clarify before I order. thanks!

A: It depends on the mic you are using. if your mic needs phantom power (condenser) then get the fethead phantom. If the mic does not need phantom power (dynamic) get the regular.

Q: 10. What is the difference between Fethead Regular and Fethead filter?

A: On some microphones, a subject close up to the mic may have exaggerated bass frequencies. Although this can be desirable for some recordings, it may not always be what you want. The Fethead filter mic has a high pass (low cut) filter built in, which will cut frequencies below 220 Hz by 6 db/octave. The standard Fethead model (B&H # TRFETHEAD) will boost all frequencies evenly.

[Preamplifier] Many years ago I bought the one for dynamic microphones and it has always served me well. Now I bought this one for condenser microphones and so fa it has been just as good. I love it!!!

[+18 dB] Always use it on my Rode NT5 every time I record classical guitar music, considered expensive for me but happy with it.

[Preamplifier] I have ordered this unit to help me to get batter sound from my AT835B as this is an old boom mic that has a good sound but it need a bust in the preamp and this unit help me with it and also with my MKH-416 so this is a good product and it is worth the price

[Preamplifier] Did exactly what it said it would do. Managed to boost audio from a small condenser mic while allowing me to lower the gain. Sounds as loud as before, but now I have lower noise. Would recommend.

[Preamplifier] As a voice over artist--The combo of my microphone (AT875R) and audio interface (Audient iD4) had me pumping the gain knob to 4 or 5 'o clock on the dial..which in turn made for a TERRIBLE, hissy, noise floor...which in turn made me add Noise Reduction / hi pass filters, etc..much to the detriment of the overall quality of my audio clips. Now that I've added in the in-line phantom preamp, my gain knob is BELOW the 12'o clock position. So, the signal is boosted, and I'm not having to over-crank my interface just to get my speaking voice between -12db / -6 db, AND I'm using far less noise reduction/filters. The only downside is you can't dial in sounds/frequencies...however, it's an in-line preamp...so...that's the way it is. Know that going in, and you'll be fine. If you want a preamp that you can tinker around and play with different sounds, then this is not for you.
