Using a 16MP Live MOS sensor, the G85 is capable of capturing clear, high-resolution stills as well as UHD 4K video. The sensor's design omits an optical low-pass filter in order to achieve a high degree of sharpness and resolution, and its design also affords a sensitivity range from ISO 200-25600 to suit working in a variety of lighting conditions. Additionally, fast shooting performance is also afforded, with the ability to shoot at up to 40 fps with an electronic shutter function, 30 fps at 8MP using the 4K PHOTO Modes, 10 fps with AF-S and an electronic shutter, or 9 fps using a mechanical shutter with AF-S.

In addition to the versatile still shooting modes, the G85 also supports recording UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) video with either 30p or 24p frames rates at 100 Mbps. Full HD 1080p/60 is also supported at 28 Mbps in the MP4 format, along with HD recording and Full HD in AVCHD. A built-in stereo microphone can be used during recordings, and features an integrated wind-cut filter for cleaner audio quality when shooting outdoors, or an optional external mic can be used via the 3.5mm jack.

Utilizing the 4K video recording capabilities, a trio of still shooting modes are available for recording continuous 8MP stills at a 30 fps shooting rate:

  • 4K Burst: Just as with video recording, this mode will allow you to continuously record 8MP images at 30 fps for up to 29 min. 59 sec, making it ideal for instances where you need a fast frame rate in order to capture the best moment.

  • 4K Pre-Burst: This mode is ideal for times when you're unsure of the critical moment to press the shutter button and will record 8MP images at 30 fps one second prior to and one second after pressing the shutter button in order to give you 60 frames to choose from.

  • 4K Burst (S/S): This mode most closely follows the 4K video recording process, and allows you to playback your video, pause at the chosen moment, and use the shutter button to mark a chosen frame from the video and save it as a single 8MP frame.

Helping to achieve the utmost sharpness when photographing handheld, Dual I.S. combines the G85's 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization technology with lens-based image stabilization to compensate for a broader range of movement types to render sharper, clearer imagery. Dual I.S. requires the use of compatible Lumix lenses featuring O.I.S.

For accelerated autofocus performance, DFD (Depth-From-Defocus) technology is employed to quickly calculate the distance to subjects and adjust the focusing position in order to suit working with continuous shooting rates up to 6 fps with continuous AF. This contrast-detection type focus method benefits both still and video recording modes, as well as subject tracking applications where subject color, size, and motion vectors are used to intelligently lock-onto the moving subjects and ensure precise focus. Additionally, supporting working in low-light conditions, a Starlight AF feature enables accurate AF performance down to -4 EV.

Benefitting manual focus operation, focus peaking is available that highlights bright edges of contrast with a colored outline for quickly recognizing your focus point, as well as Touch MF Assist for touch-to-focus operation.

  • An integrated 2.36m-dot electronic viewfinder offers a bright, clear eye-level means for composing images, and features a 0.74x effective magnification.

  • A larger means for image composition and playback, the 3.0" 1.04m-dot rear LCD monitor has a free-angle design to support viewing from a variety of angles. It is also a touchscreen, which permits intuitive menu navigation and settings control.

  • The camera body features a durable weather-sealed construction that renders it both dust- and splash-proof for use in trying environmental conditions.

  • Ten programmable function buttons can be used to control a wide variety of settings and tools.

  • The included rechargeable lithium-ion battery is rated to provide approximately 330 shots per charge when working with the rear LCD, 320 shots with the EVF, or 800 shots with the Power Saver LVF mode.

  • A built-in pop-up flash is available to provide additional illumination when working in low-light conditions.

  • Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity allows for wireless image sharing and remote camera control from linked smartphones and tablets.

  • A variety of bracketing modes can be used for shutter speed, aperture, and white balance settings. Focus bracketing is also possible, for up to 999 images with focus steps set in 5 levels, for focus stacking applications.

  • Creative Control modes allow you to apply a unique look to imagery in-camera, and include Expressive, Retro, Old Days, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Monochrome, Dynamic Monochrome, Rough Monochrome, Silky Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Cross Process, Toy Effect, Toy Pop, Bleach Bypass, Miniature Effect, Soft Focus, Fantasy, Star Filter, One Point Color, and Sunshine.

  • Photo Styles can be used to impart a distinct quality into either stills or videos, and include Standard, Vivid, Natural, Monochrome, L. Monochrome, Scenery, Portrait, Custom, Cinelike D, Cinelike V.

  • A Silent Mode can be used to mute camera noises for more discreet shooting in sound-sensitive environments.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this camera made in Japan?

A: Unfortunately, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G85 Mirrorless Micro Four Thirds Digital Camera has just recently been announced last month and is not currently available. At this time, we do not have an estimated arrival date for the camera. As the camera has not yet arrived, we do not yet know the country of origin at this time.

Q: 2. Can the built-in flash be tilted upward to bounce off a ceiling?

A: No. It is on a modestly complex hinge to project the flash forward and up to avoid shadow from a lens shade. This does look to work better than earlier Lumix flashes that could project lens shadow at wider zoom settings.

Q: 3. Is there a headphone jack or some other way of monitoring audio recording and playback through headphones?

A: While the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G85 does have a microphone input jack, unfortunately, the camera does not have a headphone output jack.

Q: 4. Are there any other remote options besides the shutter control remote for pictures or smartphone app? Something wired that can control zoom, focus, and iris?

A: Not that I know of. Smartphone app works. You can use a wired connection to fire the shutter only. Those are all I have found.

Q: 5. Does anyone know of a power supply that will work with this camera, so I don't have to rely on batteries all the time?

A: There is no external power supply available.

Q: 6. Does this camera offer automatic, in-unit sensor cleaning?

A: Yes, it has automatic sensor cleaning.

Q: 7. 1) unlimited 4k video recording or 30min?2) 4k video recording crop?

A: US version do NOT have the 29:59 limit. EU does

Q: 8. Is this camera durable?

A: It is very durable. I've used it in rain, cold, heat - you name it. The weather sealing on the camera is excellent.

Q: 9. Are the RAW pictures still 12-bit? When is M43 going to get 14-bit RAW?

A: It appears that the DMC-G85 has 12-Bit Raw. I wouldnt be able to say if/when a micro four thirds camera might hit the market with 14-bit.

Q: 10. Is this Lens Weather Sealed Version as well?

A: Not that I know of. But i did have an event outdoors with rain and camera got wet a bit. But nothing happened. I believe it does have a natural resistence same as iPhone 7. But it wouldn't be recommended to use under water for example

[TTL] I purchased this as an upgrade to my GH4. I loved my GH4 and used it for stills and video over the last 3 years. For my needs, the G85 is a much better tool. For photography the G85 is a much better camera. I liked the feel and ergonomics of the GH4, but prefer the G85. It's is a little smaller, is solid, and fits better in my hand. The pictures do seem to be sharper, and the IBIS allows me to take interior photos (for real estate) without a tripod that I would normally need. I didn't love the GH4 for photos, but I'm loving the G85. Compared to the GH4, the G85 is missing some key 'pro' video features: variable frame rate (slo motion to 96fps), a headphone jack, and the option for VLOG. I didn't use these features, so loosing these is not a drawback for me. The G85's IBIS is the big leap forward. I do real estate and community video, so I'm hopeful that I may be able to loose my tripod and slider for some shoots (we'll see). I still need to update the firmware on all lenses and the camera to do more tests, but I'm really liking the stabilized video out of camera. The GH4 is silent, but you can hear the IBIS on the G85. I've read that it doesn't affect sound recording, but I'll need to test it. Beyond incremental improvements, I really appreciate the ergonomics, menu system, and tons of features offered by Lumix cameras.

[0 to 18 EV] B&H, I have to say that you earned my trust for overseas delivery. I am deployed currently in the Middle East and the camera + rode mic came well packed and right under two weeks. B&H took very good care to package the equipment and thanks for that. Due to some dumb lithium battery regulation for shipping overseas, B&H was nice enough to install the battery into the camera so that it met the safety regulation for the post office. Just note, it is easier to call B&H to have this done since there seems to be an error when trying to check out over the web. Wish there was an option for that without having to call. Other than that, great service and product!

[Stills & Video] I got this camera to replace my second gh4 because we shoot a lot of handheld videos. This is hands down the. Eat value as of today for 4k video shooters. The 4k is sharp and clean and very detailed. It's better in low light than my gh4 and we have got so many great shots because of the IBIS. The IBIS hands down spanks our Sony a6500 and they are not even in same ball park in this category. This is a great camera that takes nice stills and amazing video!

[Stereo ] Only had it a few weeks, but had a G7 already, so not much of a learning curve. I love the G85. The autofocus seems much improved over the G7, a little large body. But no limit on recording time. Now, if it only had a headphone jack... As a videogrpaher who has been a long time Canon guy, I am moving to Panasonic as their line of 4k DSLR's are way ahead of anything else. Just read the reviews everywhere. It's not just my opinion. And the kit lens that comes with it is pretty nice too. Not a prime, but descent for sure, (12-60mm).

[2.25 lb] I bought this camera for the 4K video capabilities and was extremely impressed. I had been debating between a more expensive DSLR or the Lumix G85 - and I am so glad I went with the G85. First - the higher priced DSLR's usually record in 1080 instead of 4K, so the image quality (for video) is better. Second - the G85 features exceptional image stabilization which is crucial for professional quality handheld shots. Third - the G85 also features weather-proofing which keeps me at ease when shooting outside.

I'd recommend buying a faster lens with an aperture of F/2 or larger to achieve the same DOF as a full frame DSLR. With the smaller image sensor, you'll need a wider aperture to achieve the same look. However, there are several affordable lenses on the market that will achieve this. ThePanasonic 25mm f/1.7 is the most affordable, but theMitakon 25mm f/0.95 can create truly stunning bokeh for a 4/3 camera. I also purchased theRokinon 85mm T1.5 Cine for extreme close-ups or distant subjects. All of these lenses, paired with the Lumix G85 offer exceptional bokeh that will instantly give your shoot a professional look. Just make sure to use the focus assist feature on the G85 with those wide apertures!

[20 mm] I have had a lot of fun with this camera. I am not an expert user, but I bought it to take photos and videos of my new baby and to take photos while traveling. I am an amateur user and I use the IA mode as much as I use the manual modes. For background I've previously used the Panasonic G5, the NEX-7, the A6000 and the Oly EM-5. This camera is easily my favorite to use. The stabilization really does work well. The images are very sharp and the movies are fantastic. One thing no one seems to talk about is the fact that you can take 40 frames per second with the focus locked. It's incredible if you want to catch a very specific moment with a kid or sporting event or whatever. I'll let the professionals write the full details, but as a more basic user this camera does everything I could want it to do. The only time I take the Sony Camera's out now is to do Tripod potrait shoots of the boy. Everything else is this and if I am doing hand held shoots of the boy this is a no brainer choice.
