Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Just trying to clarify a few things - what is the weight of the minimax (same people say 45lbs, some say 25lbs?? Also is this truly 8ft at its highest (when parallel) and therefore equivalent to an 8ft stand with a boom arm (that can be angled to be higher while sacrificing a little distance)

A: MiniMax weighs 44lbs. You are correct about the reach, It’s horizontal reach is at 8ft but can angle higher while sacrificing that bit of distance. Check out the info at www.msegrip.com

Q: 2. what is the best mathews c stand for this boom?

A: Any c-stand, junior roller, combo, hi-roller will work depending on how much leg spread you need to assist the counterbalance for a safe hold. In other words, say you have just a head on this boom, with a c-stand and proper sand bags, you would be just fine. But if you start to carry more weight, upsize the stand. The whole point with this boom, its small and compact, designed to fit in cramped spaces. When you start to carry more weight, invest in a Manfrotto Mega-boom. It needs a junior roller or similar, but its still fairly compact for for its abilities.

Q: 3. Can someone recommend a travel case for this?

A: try this case https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1699214-REG/global_truss_dt_3900_bag_transport_bag_dt_3900l_tripod.html

Q: 4. Can it go fully vertical when mounted?

A: Putting this boom in a vertical position would leave it slightly tilted.

Q: 5. How does this mount to stand and how does a light with a 5/8 receiver mount to this boom?

A: The mini has a 3.5 grip head with a 5/8 receiver and a 5/8 baby pin to mount your light.

Q: 6. Confused by " A 3:1 weight ratio is recommended for safe operation of Mini Max" ... 3:1 of what? Payload to ... ??? This would make sense if it was a boom with and sandbagging the short side.... but there is no short side???

A: If you have 10lbs mounted on the end of the arm, you need 30lbs weighting down the base.

Q: 7. I want to build a boom light stand. Can this boom be used with this stand?https://a href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=details&O=&Q=&ap=y&c3api=1876%2C%7Bcreative%7D%2C%7Bkeyword%7D&gclid=CPHx85mt_NQCFdxMDQodQ48Ewg&is=REG&m=Y&sku=33087 target= _blank www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=details&O=&Q=&ap=y&c3api=1876%2C%7Bcreative%7D%2C%7Bkeyword%7D&gclid=CPHx85mt_NQCFdxMDQodQ48Ewg&is=REG&m=Y&sku=33087/a

A: Definitely. I use 5 and/or 10 lb. Boa sandbags as counterweights.

Q: 8. Is that a standard gobo head used on the boom? Mine broke and need to replace. Thanks.

A: Thanks all. I contacted Matthews and learned that the head on the mini boom is identical to the standard matthews gobo head with one exception - the bolt is shorter on the mini boom head.

Q: 9. Is this stable enough for camera use? Can it have a PTZ on the end of it for example and not sway or shake when the PTZ moves around?

A: The general rule is that what you put on the boom should be half of the boom's support weight. Which is 20 lbs. So, a camera with the lens really should be 10 lbs. or less.

Q: 10. Whats the max load capacity for this boom?

A: 12.5 Max weight a full extension

[2] This boom arm is beastly. Ridiculously solid construction, especially in the clamp assemblies. I'm sure this will be rock steady for my organization's video shoots for years to come.

[9.35 lb] I do have lighter, more portable booms but they get a little flimsy at times. This one fits in my stand bag since it's just a tad longer than my heavy duty light stands. One 15 lb. counter weight is really all I need with my DigiBee 800 and umbrella or medium box as the actual weight of the boom aids in it's stability. Very well constructed.
