As part of the Sports line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens' is designed to offer excellent optical performance, speed, and other customizable features that make it an ideal choice for wildlife, sports, action, and other fast-moving subjects.

This super telephoto 500mm f/4 prime lens is designed for full-frame format Nikon F-mount cameras, and can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 750mm equivalent focal length.

A relatively fast f/4 maximum aperture provides excellent illumination for a lens of this focal length.

One SLD and two FLD elements have been incorporated within the lens design to correct for chromatic aberrations throughout the entire focusing range and help to ensure high image sharpness, clarity, and contrast regardless of focus point or aperture setting. This optical design also helps to control distortion and limit vignetting.

A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.

The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. A dedicated switch on the barrel of the lens provides multiple AF modes, including a focus recall setting and AF off. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time. Two manual focus modes are available, the standard AF/MF option and an MO setting that switches the lens into manual even during continuous AF.

Optical Stabilizer system can compensate for approximately 4 stops of shutter speed for sharper images. Two modes are available, one for general use and one for panning, which uses Intelligent OS for more effective panning in any direction.

Compatible with Sigma Global Vision Teleconverters, this lens can be extended into a 700mm f/5.6 lens with the 1.4x teleconverter or a 1000mm f/8 lens with the 2x teleconverter.

A rounded nine-blade diaphragm helps to produce an attractive out-of-focus quality.

Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

Drop-in filter system works with 46mm filters. An optional RCP-11 Circular Polarizer filter is designed specifically for the lens and can be rotated while it is inserted.

The lens barrel is constructed using a magnesium alloy that is lightweight and durable, which allows this lens to perform in a wide range of situations.

The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability.

The lens hood is made of carbon fiber, a lightweight but strong material that will perform in tough conditions.

A rotating tripod foot helps keep this lens secure during shoots and features antistatic nickel plating to improve durability. It features click stops every 90° and can be turned off with a de-clicking switch for smooth movement. The lens also comes with a dedicated strap for the tripod foot which limits strain on the camera mount.

Dust- and splash-proof construction with rubber sealing to protect the mount and a water- and oil-repellent coating on the front and rear elements.

This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

[Full-Frame] I am a avid bird shooter I lean towards action/flight shots, I have used all the big guns from mainly Canon and a little Nikon and I see no difference in quality I only see a difference in price, I am truly happy with this purchase and would recommend this to anyone. Cant wait to see a 600mm from them.

[Yes] This is an upgrade over my Canon Ver I primes in terms of sharpness. I am pleasantly surprised at how good a lens this really is overall. It is as sharp if not sharper than the 500mm Ver II I tried and is cheaper than a used version of that lens.

I don't write many reviews but anyone looking at this lens is probably like I was and unsure and a bit lost since there are no reviews of it.

Well, here is one. Really happy. So far there hasn't been one moment where I thought "the Canon might have been better."

[9, Rounded] I didn’t mention in my initial review of the Sigma 500 f4 DG OS, that I purchased the lens after reading Brad Hills Sigma Vs Nikon Comparison Review. Anyone considering this lens should read Brads Comprehensive Comparison of these lenses.

I have recently used this lens wide open (with the TC 1.4 ) on a D500 and was blown away with the clarity of the images. With the same combination on the D5, I need to stop down 1/2 stop to get excellent clarity.

Hope this helps !!

[5°] I'm only a very amateur bird photographer. So far I've taken a couple hundred pictures with the lens at a Florida rookery. The pictures are amazing compared to my old Sigma 50 - 500 zoom. The best part about this lens is how the pictures stay sharp after a lot of cropping. I've tried hand holding the lens/D800 for some birds in flight and gotten some good pictures with some luck. But, the lens is lot to hold and I can't recommend using it without a tripod, except for an occasional snap. My tripod and gimbal make it a breeze to use. My monopod and ball head, with the ball pretty much locked in place, for me is a pretty good substitute for hand holding. I could have never afforded the Nikon version of this lens. So, thank you very much Sigma!

[0.15x] I've now shot around 10 football games with the lens as well as some soccer and even a few senior portraits. The 500mm f/4 Sport lens is awesomely sharp. The matched Sigma 1.4x teleconverter works better than Canon's 1.4x III (no surprise). The lens is just as sharp at 700mm f/5.6 as it is as a straight prime at 500mm. BE SURE YOU GET A USA VERSION if you are in the USA as Sigma won't even repair a non USA lens. Beware of grey market Sigma.

[f/4] Ive used my Sigma 500/4.0 for several months now, and can say it performs as well or better than all the Nikon glass I own. Its Extremely Sharp; Focus Speed is Excellent, and the colors the Sigma captures are as good as my Nikon 300/2.8 and Nikon 300/4.0 pf.

Im very pleased that I purchased the Sigma and recommend that anyone looking for a 500/4.0 give this lens a try

[9, Rounded] I have purchased this lens just over a year ago to replace my Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS USM super telephoto. I was able to test it in the field first for over a month and was so happy with the results that I just paid for it to keep it. My specialty is wildlife photography with a major interest in birds and birds in flight.
The image quality of this Sigma 500mm lens is nothing short of fantastic. I have had excellent results with this lens when using the matching Sigma TC-1401 and TC-2001 teleconverters and even when used wide open, the images are sharp edge to edge with good contrast and need very minimal post processing when using a camera such as the Canon EOS 1DxMkII, which is what I use.
The ability to customize this lens with the USB dock is great, as it allows for more tweaks than most comparable super telephoto lenses. Dont get me wrong, I know that the Canon and Nikon lenses of this caliber are also incredible, but for the price you simply cannot go wrong with the Sigma 500mm f/4 DG OS HSM Sport lens.

I would highly recommend anyone who is on a budget to consider this lens. Unfortunately, I can only attach two images. You can view some more on http://www.2madphotographers.com

[Autofocus] Very good lens. It is a pain to use it with Canon 5Ds R on a cloudy day. Works nearly flawlessly on Sony A7 III with the Metabones adapter.
