The Audio-Technica Cardioid Condenser Microphone with Gooseneck Mountis designed for use with grand or upright pianos, giving you the tools to perform with confidence in the studio or in live sound reinforcement applications.

The system features the ATM350a cardioid condenser microphone, a high-SPL mic that provides a clear, well-balanced response from any instrument. It includes an AT8491P magnetic piano mount and strong, flexible AT8490L 9" gooseneck. The mic can be securely fastened to any metal portion of the piano and positioned to stay where you want it.

The microphone’s cardioid polar pattern isolates the instrument by reducing side and rear pickup, and the switchable 80 Hz high-pass filter on the in-line power module helps control undesired low-frequency noise. The system also includes an AT8468 violin mount with hook-and-loop fastener and a protective carrying case.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can this be used as a replacement microphone on for an existing wireless system? (ta3 style connector on the existing system's body pack)

A: The Audio-Technica AT831b Cardioid Condenser Lavalier Microphone can be connected directly to a wireless bodypack transmitter with a TA3 style mini-XLR input connector that is capable of supplying the proper amount of voltage needed to power the mic. The specs list the power requirement for the AT831b as 11 to 52V.

Q: 2. Where can I get a wind cover for this microphone?

A: Auray - Fuzzy Windbuster for Lavalier Microphones (Black) B&H# AUWLW

Q: 3. Hello. I wonder how noisy it is? How does it work for recording low volume stuff?

A: The AT2021 Cardioid Condenser Microphone is designed for general instrument capturing, vocals, amplifier cabinets, and similar applications. It's signal to noise ratio is 75db and has a max SPL of 145db. It features a Cardioid polar pattern, reducing sound pickup from the sides and rear, improving isolation of the desired sound source.

Q: 4. Could this mic also be used as an overhead for an interview with good results?

A: Unlikely. It is not designed for that purpose. Dependant on distance and room acoustics; this mic is designed for close proximity, generally within inches of a musical instrument. That said, in a quiet room, with 1-2' of distance this mic MAY obtain good results for a single person.

Q: 5. Is this wireless to the receiver/amp?

A: It is not a wireless microphone at all.

Q: 6. I have a Tascam DR-701R that provide phantom power, so still I need piut the Battery in the AT831B?

A: It is battery or phantom. So you can run it with the phantom power on your DR-701, or if you would like to save some battery power on your DR-701, you can run the AT831B on battery power.

Q: 7. Can I connect the AT 831B ( with the power supply module ) in an acoustic guitar amp with a XLR input and already providing a phantom power of 16 V?

A: The AT831B can operate on phantom power ranging from 9-52 volts and also using battery. There would be no issue connecting to a device that provides 16V phantom via XLR.

Q: 8. Does this microphone have GSM or cell phone interference? I have the AT803b, and I get interference from GSM cell phones near the microphone.

A: I haven't noticed cell interference, but it does have a ton of handling noise. Even the faintest fabric rustle is pretty noticeable.

Q: 9. Can I connect this mic through a Rode AI-1 audio interface to my PC using the XLR connector from the included power module?

A: Yes, the Audio-Technica AT831b Cardioid Condenser Lavalier Microphone can be connected to an audio interface such as the Rode AI-1 using an XLR cable.

Q: 10. Hi, since this mic is no longer availbile, which would be a similar mic?

A: The AKG P170 (B&H #AKP170B) could be considered quite similar to the Audio-Technica AT2021 Cardioid Condenser Microphone.

[Cardioid] I use the AT831B for interviews filmed with a DSLR, where sound quality is always an issue. This mic works very well, and I'm completely happy with the sound quality.

[End Address] i am a legal video specialist and need a rugged wired mic that rejects background noise and delivers clear crisp speech. I have used the AT831b for nearly 20 years, and they get dropped, abused, yanked and spit on and give many years of good service. Once in a while I have to replace one, but I would never consider anything else for my work. I capture testimony that can never be re-done if anything goes wrong, and no excuses will be accepted. I can't say anything negative about this AT mic, it never disappoints. I haven't used it with a guitar, but I have used it as a musical soloist, and it is great for that too.

[11 to 52 V] Works well. The goose neck is just the right length. Using it with the Avid S6.

[Solid-State] I recently purchased a Yamaha M7CL Digital Audio Console and needed an affordable talkback microphone. I use Audio-Technica wireless microphones at church and have been pleased with their reliability and affordability. Most Yamaha digital consoles do not include a built-in talkback mic, so this was a great choice for talkback because it plugs directly in to the talkback mic input in front of the console and the gooseneck bends out of the way when not in use.

[End Address] I bought two for recording guitar and some band concerts. So far I have worked with these on acoustic guitar, stereo and mono mic'd, both near field and far field. To me, these mics sound incredibly clear and accurate. Zero noise that I can detect. I am really pleased with these. They sound much better than the Shure SM57 and noticeably better then my AT3035 LDC mics. I have had no problems. I run them at 0dB and with the 80Hz filter on. These are feeding a Presonus interface and a Mac running Logic Express 9. It's a dream set-up.
