Spanning a useful telephoto range, the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM Lens for Photographyfrom Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM Lens for Photographyis a flexible zoom well-suited for a variety of subjects, ranging from portraiture to wildlife. Similarly versatile, the lens utilizes NANO USM technology that combines a fast, stills-optimized ring-type Ultrasonic Motor and a smooth, silent video-optimized Stepping Motor for all-around focusing performance to benefit multimedia image-makers. This dual-purpose AF motor also offers notably quicker performance throughout the zoom range for more responsive shooting from near to far. Additionally, also aiding both photo and movie recording, an Image Stabilizer system compensates for up to four stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting when working with slower shutter speeds.

Beyond its performance attributes, this lens is also characterized by its unique Lens Information Display, which clearly showcases focus distance, focal length, and stabilizer settings on a top-facing screen for easy recognition. Benefitting optical performance, the lens' construction utilizes one Ultra Low Dispersion (UD) element to control chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity, and, additionally, a nine-blade diaphragm is used to produce a pleasing bokeh quality for shallow depth of field imagery.

Telephoto zoom designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, this lens is also suitable for use with APS-C models where it provides a 112-480mm equivalent focal length range.

One UD element is featured in the optical design to noticeably reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for increased clarity and improved color fidelity.

Lens Information Display on the top of the lens barrel clearly highlights focusing distance, focal length, and Image Stabilizer amount.

NANO USM system utilizes both a ring type USM and an STM mechanism to realize quick and accurate focusing that is also smooth and near-silent to suit both photography and video applications. This focusing system also affords full-time manual focus control when working in the one-shot AF mode.

An Image Stabilizer compensates for up to four stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting when working in difficult lighting conditions and with slower shutter speeds.

A circular nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when working with selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How does this compare to the Tamron 70-300mm VC lens?

A: As far as image quality is concerned, it is a similar to Tamron. But the auto focus speed is on another level. Canon focuses fast and accurate. I have seen some reviewers say that tamron has slight edge at the shorter focal length but I didn't notice any. I used Tamron for shooting birds in flight, it is bit slow for that. Canon just shines.

Q: 2. Is this lens good for portraits?

A: This lens could definitely be used for portraits in the 70-135mm range.

Q: 3. Will this lens fight on a 77d

A: I don't know for sure on the 77d but it works on both a 70 and 80d.

Q: 4. Is this lens compatible with a Canon T2i?

A: This lens is compatible with my T3i. I assume it will be with a canon T21

Q: 5. compatible with Canon mirrorless R?

A: You'll need an EF-to-RF adapter as this is meant for their EOS EF-mount cameras.

Q: 6. Is this a macro lens?

A: The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM Lens is not a macro lens--it only has maximum magnification of 0.25X, not the required 1.0x, or 1:1.

Q: 7. How does this lens's autofocus compare with that of the 70-300 L?

A: Noticeably faster, especially at 70mm

Q: 8. I want to eventually upgrade to a full frame camera, will this lens work with a full frame camera?

A: Yes, the Canon EF 70-300mm USM Lens will work with an EF mount Full Frame camera. However, you will need the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R to mount the lens on the new Canon RF mount mirrorless Full Frame cameras.

Q: 9. teleconverter?

A: The Kenko Teleplus PRO 300 DGX 1.4x AF Teleconverter (B&H # KE14XP300C) and Kenko Teleplus PRO 300 DGX 2x AF Teleconverter (B&H # KE2XP300C) would both be compatible with this lens.

Q: 10. Does this lens come with the lens hood?

A: No, it doesnt come with a lens hood. But its still a great lens overall.

[34° to 8° 15'] I bought this lens to upgrade from a kit 55-250mm aps-c lens. I have had this lens for a year now and like the extra reach, faster focus and that the front element is easier to clean. I don't use the digital display on the lens because I use it mostly for bird watching. The zoom lock is useful while hiking with lens hanging down.

[Yes] Only L options in this zoom range are extremely heavy (and white). Not a fan of the colour or weight. Waited for this lens to be in stock and ordered. Used for a recent trip to Hawaii. Unbelievable picture quality and focus speed. Absolutely no noise during focus. Again, the quality and colour of the pictures are unreal. For the money, lower weight, and non stand out colour, this lens is worth every penny and then some. Truly impressed!

[Canon EF] Great all-around tele-zoom, and sharp. Not as bright to focus with as my 300 2.8, but it’s a lot smaller and lighter for everyday shots. A versatile addition to my gear. Easy to use, the fastest autofocus I’ve seen. No tripod collar, but this lens is so easy to handle, and with IS, it doesn’t need one. Bought this lens to supplement, not replace any other lenses, feel like I got a lot for the price.

[1.99 lb] The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM has very fast and silent AF. It is a full-frame lens, not a small lens but it handles extremely well with smooth zoom action. The manual focus ring at front focuses with a smooth action although it is not a mechanical linkage, it is focus-by-wire.

This is a medium weight lens. It weighs 1.5 lbs (750g) and can be awkward in small hands. The lens diameter is 3.1 inches. It balances well on the Canon R7.

Bokeh wide-open is excellent at all focal lengths. As a full-frame lens it renders sharp images at wide open aperture on APS-C sensors.

As you zoom to longer focal lengths there is a change in aperture. Aperture shift while zooming is as follows:
At 70mm aperture is f/4.
At 78mm aperture is f/4.5
At 106mm aperture is f/5.0.
At 176mm and on onwards f/5.6

This is an amazingly lens. Well built and a superb performer regardless of the price. That Canon can sell it at such a reasonable price is very surprising. It is an amazingly good deal.

[Autofocus] I recently bought my camera and this extra telephoto lens and got a chance to use it in the bighorn mountains this week. I was able to get great shots of some bighorn sheep quite a distance away as well as other shots of the mountains. Easy to use, not too big where I won't want to use it. So it appears perfect for my needs.
