Loaded with almost every piece of technology in Sigma 500mm f/4 DG OS HSM Sports Lens SA MountGlobal Vision arsenal, the Sigma 500mm f/4 DG OS HSM Sports Lens SA Mounttakes its spot as the flagship in the speedy Sports line. Available here with a Sigma SA mount, this super telephoto lens lets you capture distant subjects, and with a speedy Hyper Sonic AF motor users will be able to easily track fast action. A relatively fast maximum aperture of f/4 furthers your imaging potential with excellent illumination for a lens of this class. One SLD and two FLD elements help ensure outstanding optical performance by minimizing aberrations and distortion while a Super Multi-Layer coating combats flare and ghosting. Also, this lens is equipped with an Optical Stabilizer system that compensates for up to 4 stops of shutter speed.

This large lens is designed to be used in some of the most trying conditions and is made from a durable and lightweight magnesium alloy. As part of the Sports line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens' is designed to offer excellent optical performance, speed, and other customizable features that make it an ideal choice for wildlife, sports, action, and other fast-moving subjects.

This super telephoto 500mm f/4 prime lens is designed for full-frame format Sigma SA-mount cameras, and can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 750mm equivalent focal length.

A relatively fast f/4 maximum aperture provides excellent illumination for a lens of this focal length.

One SLD and two FLD elements have been incorporated within the lens design to correct for chromatic aberrations throughout the entire focusing range and help to ensure high image sharpness, clarity, and contrast regardless of focus point or aperture setting. This optical design also helps to control distortion and limit vignetting.

A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.

The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. A dedicated switch on the barrel of the lens provides multiple AF modes, including a focus recall setting and AF off. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time. Two manual focus modes are available, the standard AF/MF option and an MO setting that switches the lens into manual even during continuous AF.

Optical Stabilizer system can compensate for approximately 4 stops of shutter speed for sharper images. Two modes are available, one for general use and one for panning, which uses Intelligent OS for more effective panning in any direction.

Compatible with Sigma Global Vision Teleconverters, this lens can be extended into a 700mm f/5.6 lens with the 1.4x teleconverter or a 1000mm f/8 lens with the 2x teleconverter.

A rounded nine-blade diaphragm helps to produce an attractive out-of-focus quality.

Drop-in filter system works with 46mm filters. An optional RCP-11 Circular Polarizer filter is designed specifically for the lens and can be rotated while it is inserted.

The lens barrel is constructed using a magnesium alloy that is lightweight and durable, which allows this lens to perform in a wide range of situations.

The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability.

The lens hood is made of carbon fiber, a lightweight but strong material that will perform in tough conditions.

A rotating tripod foot helps keep this lens secure during shoots and features antistatic nickel plating to improve durability. It features click stops every 90° and can be turned off with a de-clicking switch for smooth movement. The lens also comes with a dedicated strap for the tripod foot which limits strain on the camera mount.

Dust- and splash-proof construction with rubber sealing to protect the mount and a water- and oil-repellent coating on the front and rear elements.

This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is the manual focus mechanical (the ring is physically linked to the moving elements) or focus-by-wire (moving the ring tells a motor how to move the elements)?

A: The lens uses a Hyper Sonic Motor to move the elements. It is focus by wire.

Q: 2. Will this lens autofocus with a sigma 1.4 teleconverter when adapted to a Sony A7R3?

A: The answer depends on the EF to E mount adapter. One answer is no, you cannot use the 500mm f/4 and the Sigma 1.4 teleconverter and mounting to the camera with the Sigma MC-11 EF to E-mount adapter since that device does not work with any teleconverter. The second answer is not known for there are no reports of using the Sigma 500mm f/4 with the Sigma 1.4 teleconverter using a Metabones EF to E mount adapter on a Sony a7 R III at this time.

Q: 3. Can the sigma ts-81 foot replacement be used on this lens?

A: Unfortunately, the TS-81 is not compatible with the Sigma 500mm f/4 DG OS HSM Sports Lens.

Q: 4. Does this lens work with a Sony a7riv and Mc-11 adapter? If so, does anybody have experience or knowledge of how well it works? Any loss in image quality, tracking or speed?

A: Yes, it works well with the A7R4 with no loss of image quality and the focus is very good.

Q: 5. Does this lens focus as fast as the Nikon 500mm?

A: I used this lens for few days before I returned it to BH. The lens AF is slower than Nikon's equivalent. It is also very inconsistent from shot to shot. I used to own the 600 f/4G and currently have the 800mm FL VR. AF accuracy and consistency from both of these lenses is better than the Sigma 500 OS. The Sigma does not respond to the different settings of the AF delay custom function.

Q: 6. A one year warranty is listed, is this the total warranty?

A: Thank you for your interest in Sigma products. All Sigma products sold in USA through Authorized Sigma dealers, come with 4yr warranty for US residents.

Q: 7. Are there any narrowband filters available in the drop-in 46mm style for this lens, I am having a tough time finding.

A: Narrow band filters are also called light pollution filters or natural night filters. This NiSi 46mm Natural Night Filter is compatible with the Sigma 500mm f/4 DG OS HSM Sports Lens for Nikon F.

Q: 8. Is this lens compatible with Kenko teleconverters?

A: Unfortunately, this particular lens has not been tested with any of the Kenko teleconverters from Canon to our knowledge. Your results may vary.

Q: 9. Is this lens compatible with canon eos r5?

A: You would need to have something along the lines of the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R (https://bhpho.to/2wL8wZY) to adapt EF lenses to an RF body.

Q: 10. Is there a mount that allows this lens to be used on a Sony A9?

A: The Canon mount of this lens can be mounted on Sony via Sigma MC-11 Mount converter a href= https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1234034-REG/sigma_89e965_mc_11_mount_adapter_for.html target= _blank https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1234034-REG/sigma_89e965_mc_11_mount_adapter_for.html/a

[0.15x] I have purchased this lens just over a year ago to replace my Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS USM super telephoto. I was able to test it in the field first for over a month and was so happy with the results that I just paid for it to keep it. My specialty is wildlife photography with a major interest in birds and birds in flight.
The image quality of this Sigma 500mm lens is nothing short of fantastic. I have had excellent results with this lens when using the matching Sigma TC-1401 and TC-2001 teleconverters and even when used wide open, the images are sharp edge to edge with good contrast and need very minimal post processing when using a camera such as the Canon EOS 1DxMkII, which is what I use.
The ability to customize this lens with the USB dock is great, as it allows for more tweaks than most comparable super telephoto lenses. Dont get me wrong, I know that the Canon and Nikon lenses of this caliber are also incredible, but for the price you simply cannot go wrong with the Sigma 500mm f/4 DG OS HSM Sport lens.

I would highly recommend anyone who is on a budget to consider this lens. Unfortunately, I can only attach two images. You can view some more on http://www.2madphotographers.com

[Yes] I am a avid bird shooter I lean towards action/flight shots, I have used all the big guns from mainly Canon and a little Nikon and I see no difference in quality I only see a difference in price, I am truly happy with this purchase and would recommend this to anyone. Cant wait to see a 600mm from them.

[f/32] I've taken about 700 photos with the lens. Focusing is fast and accurate. I have it mounted to a D850 that have preformed very well together. I have used a spyderlenscal to calibrate the lens using Sigma USB Dock. It only need a minimal adjustment (less than both of my Nikon F2.8 lens). It's light enough to handhold for short periods and several shots I've taken at dusk and dawn that look great.

[Full-Frame] Very good lens. It is a pain to use it with Canon 5Ds R on a cloudy day. Works nearly flawlessly on Sony A7 III with the Metabones adapter.

[5°] This is my first big prime for birding and I'm really liking the results so far. As others have noted, the image quality is fantastic. But when hiking more than a few steps it's often my Canon 100-400 that comes along instead. It comes with a nice backpack I haven't tried yet, but man it is heavy. You'd have to be popeye to hold this thing steady on it's own - I don't see how anyone could manage more than a few shots without at least a monopod. On my gimbal head it becomes featherweight, but it's a different experience being mostly stationary with a tripod. I expect my shots will improve as I develop patience and let the birds do more of the traveling.

[Full-Frame] This Sigma lens is one of the best telephoto lenses out there. I'd rank it on par with the 400mm/2.8 and 800mm/5.6 Nikon FL. It is slightly better than the 150-600mm Sigma Sport lens, which is also very good, and it is as good as many of the excellent Sigma macro lenses, e.g. the 180mm/2.8.

The only caveat I should mention is the need for the use of the Sigma Optimization dock. I had to adjust both for backfocusing issues and the focus speed. While I adjusted focus distance correction right away, it took me quite a while to realize that some of the trouble I had when photographing birds was due to the focusing speed set to normal. There is also a fast focusing speed that can be assigned to either the C1 or C2 custom setting via the adjustment dock, which is highly recommended.

Once properly adjusted, this is one of the best long telephoto options out there. A brilliant lens even at F4.

[Sigma SA] This lens makes your day if you are a bird photographer, works excellent with canon R5 using the RF adapter, it is quick, sharp, stable. I love it.

[f/4] I have been shooting with this lens for a bit over two years, initialy with the Nikon D500, then with the D850 with battery grip, two years with the D500 and one year with the D850. I als oshot with the Nikon 200-500 f5.6 which is a great lens, but not in the same league as the prime when it comes to autofocus speed and tracking capabilities, and build quality. This lens is just sublime, tack sharp with excellent contrast , super fast autofocus and tracks like a cheeta tracking it's prey. I would recommend this lens to anyone looking for a prime lens to add to their arsenal. All my BIF shots are hand held, including the sample images I uploaded. You can also checxk out my work below.
