A: I think using the pole inserted into the paper roll is the best way to do it. I don't think the paper roll is sturdy enough to be a long term solution to support the weight of the background as it will weaken in the middle and break as indicated by the slight bend in the middle when you suspect it on its own weight.

A: Depending on your usage and height of your model, it would be sufficient if you are able to hang the backdrop 7' or 8' high and sweep a few feet onto the floor, with your model standing directly in front of the backdrop. If you would like more separation of your model from the backdrop, you will need to extend the background on the floor in post production.

A: I've never used vellum but I have used this translum 2 ways. As a backdrop for headshots with a softbox placed directly behind and one in front to light my subjects. It seems to be very durable but you do have to be careful not to crimp or bend it as it blanches out when pinched.
