The Tiffen 3x4" Blue Hard Edge Graduated Filteris a hard-edged graduated color filter providing a bluish color across the image, giving a cooling effect for your photographs. The graduated filter design keeps a portion of the image neutral, resulting in a more realistic look while allowing for the sky or other bright areas to take on the color of the density. The 3 density provides less of a blue cast than the 4 density filter, but more than the 2 density.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch. This filter measures 3 x 4" / 76.2 x 101.6mm and features a vertical orientation; meaning the filter's line of transition runs parallel to the short side of the filter.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I noticed reviews on Nisi soft grad ND filters, that the transition is very long. the dark section dosn't start until very high up on the filter. The Nisi Hard edge has a smaller transition, it almost looks more comparable to a soft edge.their soft looks more comparable to a blender. dose anyone have any hands on experience with the soft edge ND vs the hard edge ND. If so is my observation true? Thanks

A: I have found the hard grad lies somewhere around the medium grads that some other companies have. Their soft has a much more gradual transition than most other companies though. I have found it to me much more forgiving than most other soft grads.

Q: 2. What is the difference between the Hard and Soft GND filters?

A: The Hard GND has a more sudden transition between ND filtered and unfiltered area, intended for filtering along a clear and straight line- generally a horizon line. The soft GND transitions over a wider area, giving a less apparent effect between ND filtered and unfiltered area of an image.

Q: 3. Can I hand hold this filter in front of my camera?

A: You can, but any movement may not give you the results you are after. I would get the holder and adapter ring. please review the following item LEE Filters LEE100 Filter Holder https://bhpho.to/3B3Qwdn

Q: 4. What is the difference between the Cokin P121 and the P121S graduated neutral density filters? Both are stated to be 3-stop graduated filters. Does the s version make a more gradual transition from clear to dark than the base 121?

A: The S version is a softer graduation

Q: 5. Which is GND Filer (Hard or Soft) is recommend for a APC camera (e.g. 7DMII)?

A: Hard ones

Q: 6. Are the Cpkin filters in the p series 100 x 150?

A: No, they are not. The above filter, which is designed for the Cokin P-series filter holder, measures 3.3 x 3.9 (84.0 x 100.0 mm) in size. A filter measuring 100mm x 150mm in size would be too large to fit in a Cokin P-series filter holder.

Q: 7. Is this a hard grad ND filter? I believe it is from the description but wanted to check. My instructor urges me to buy a 2-stop or 3-stop soft graduated neutral density (grad ND) filter. If this is not the right one which one do you offer for the A series of Cokin filters?

A: Yes, this is a hard graduated ND filter. The soft 121 Graduated ND filter by Cokin is designated as such with an S after the number, so you are going to want this one: http://bhpho.to/1hwdrCw

Q: 8. can anyone tell me this is the soft set or the hard set? thanks

A: The LEE Filters 4x6 Graduated ND Resin Filter Set (0.3, 0.6, 0.9) listed above is the hard filter set; the LEE Filters Graduated Neutral Density Soft Filter Set 4 x 6 - Consists of Three Graduated ND (Neutral Density) Filters (.3, .6, .9) - Soft Transition, B&H # LENDGSS Mfr # SET-RESIN-NDGS, would be the soft filter set.

Q: 9. Hi, how do I specify hard or soft graduation for this item when ordering? Thanks, Richard

A: This Lee filter would be the hard edge version. For the soft edge version of the kit, please see B&H # LENDGSS http://bhpho.to/19IlKqj.

Q: 10. What is a difference between rasin filters and hard edge filters?

A: I assume you meant resin filters. Resin is the material they are made from, either resin or glass. Both work great, although resin will scratch easier, I believe they are also cheaper, but good brands like Lee Filters are excellent. Both types of filters can come either with a hard edge or a graduated edge. This refers to how quickly the shading in the filter changes from dark to clear. Hard edges work best for something like a sunset where you can but the edge exactly on the horizon, if not careful there will be a prominent line thru the shot. Graduated filters have very gradual change from shaded to clear, and will leave not noticeable line, their effect is more gradual . I hope this helps.
