Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What's the difference between this one to the Sanyang 50? Because the price is 150 high

A: Rokinon has two versions of most of the line of Cinema Lenses, with the slightly higher end version being the DS. Most of the DS lenses have an extra blade or two in the iris providing a better bokeh, and focus markings on both sides of the lens. Some of the Rokinon DS series lenses have more differences, but they are the same product as Sanyang, you are just looking at two different series from the same brand.

Q: 2. what size hoya filter does this lens require?

A: Filter size is 77mm

Q: 3. does this lens fit and work with a canon 5D mark II?

A: Fits on a 5D M3 but doesn't communicate with the camera.

Q: 4. Comparing the specs of this lens and the Rokinon 50mm f/1.4 AS IF UMC Lens, is there much difference between the two other than their minimum focusing distance? I.e. What's the reason for this lens being close to $200 more expensive than its AS IF sibling? Cheers.

A: Samyang is a South Korean manufacturer that makes the Samyang, Rokinon, Bower and other lens lines. Generally, all the lenses can be counted on having very good quality at very affordable prices. The Rokinon DS (Dual Side focus markings) is the top of line of their small cine lenses. (This is not counting their Xeen line of cinema lenses.) Besides the dual side markings, the coatings on the lenses in the DS line are matched for ease in color grading. If you feel you need these features you can purchase them and possibly retain greater resale value. If not, you can save.

Q: 5. What is the difference between the AS UMC and the DSX lines?

A: The difference between the Rokinon AS UMC DS series and the Rokinon DSX series is that the Rokinon DSX series has weather sealing and a 9 blade iris. The Rokinon AS UMC DS series does not have weather sealing and has only an 8 blade iris.

Q: 6. is this mean that I do not need metabones to using this lens? since its already for MFT?

A: If you have a camera with an MFT mount, you will not need an adapter to use this MFT Mount Lens.

Q: 7. Am I correct in my thinking that the T on this cine lens is the equivalent of the F on a photographic lens? If so, at T1.5 is it safe to assume that this would be good in really low light on a 5D Mk3?

A: The short answer is yes. This lens is great in low light on 5DIII. Having said that, F-stop and T-stop are not exactly equivalent, although you can still think of it that way. F-stop measure the size of the opening of a lens, while T-top measures the how much light passes through the lens. Because lenses have different characteristics, two different lenses set to f/4 might let in a slightly different amount of light. On the other hand, two lenses with the same T-stop will let in exactly the same amount of light, making it easier to match shots taken with two different lenses. That's why T-stop is a better than F-stop for film production, and is therefore the standard on cine lenses. If this is confusing or you're just curious to learn more, do a google search for t-stop vs f-stop. There's a lot of info out there.

Q: 8. is this lens compatible with the Sony NEX5T?

A: As the Nex 5T has the Sony e-Mount the lens is compatible. All lenses with e-Mount fit to Sony cameras with e-Mount. As the lens is a manual focus lens, there is no AF.

Q: 9. Does this version produce sharper and better image quality than the 1.4 photo lens? Different optics?

A: This is a cinema lens. There are several differences and none of them are to do with sharpness. First cinema lenses are measured in T stops not F stops. This means that they calculate into the equation how much light the optics lets through (T stops let in more light than F stops). Second, the gear rings are different so that you can put a follow focus on it. Third it has a click less aperture for smooth adjustments during filming. Fourth it has the UMC coating which gives you a little different, more cinematic colors.A Rokinon lens will be as sharp as a Rokinon lens is. That's not a knock, I think they're pretty great for their price.

Q: 10. Do the Rokinon Cine lenses include image stabilization?

A: No they do not

[Super35/APS-C] This guy. AMAZING lens with accurate colors (for the price of a Cine lens). I use this with a A7Sii and it almost constantly stays on my camera. Interviews with this are a must with the 1.5 aperture. Perfect for entry level professional videographers.

[62 mm] This is a great lens. It's fast and a 50mm is a must have lens. I shoot training films and short form movies mostly. But I also use my cinema lens for photos. Buy it you will love it.

[T1.3] Works a treat. Used the 50mm recently with my FS700 capturing to an Atomos Shogun (see sample image from the shoot). I also own the 24mm, 35mm and the 85mm versions. For the money, you just can't go wrong in my humble opinion.

[Super35/APS-C] Beautiful visuals, easily accessible focus and aperture rings. A great cine lens; use it wonderfully with the Metabones lens adapter for my MFT Blackmagic Pocket camera. Highly recommend!

[1.245 lb] The only issue I have is that I need to get the 24mm, and 85mm to build out my lens set. B&H just take my dang money :D

[62 mm] Picked this during the holiday sale. Ive upgraded from the Canon 50mm f/1.8 and this is major. Love the buttery smooth focus and aperture. Ill be using this for event videography so its great for rack focusing on details or changing exposure outdoors without having hard stops from aperture clicks or changing ISO.

Worth mentioning that Im shooting on a Panasonic GH5 with a speedbooster ultra and Im able to get sharp focus even at T1.5 (minimal chromatic abberation wide open), I feel more comfortable at 2.0-2.8, but Im very happy with the quality.
