The Tokina PRO IRND filter is a revolutionary filter that stabilizes the transmittance of color throughout the visible spectrum. There are generally two types of IRND filter manufacturing processes currently in the market today. One type cuts the near infrared from a particular wavelength and the other controls rather than cuts the infrared up to 1200 nm. The Tokina PRO IRND filter is of the latter category, using suppression rather than cutting to eliminate infrared pollution. Even though both methods can be equally effective, the former type of cutting is often prone to producing unwanted color shifts. The round PRO IRND filter has an ND vapor deposition coating on both sides of the glass creating a high-precision, truly neutral filter.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will my lens hood still fit on my lens with this filter?

A: Typically this is determined by the lens in question, but because the front and back are the same diameter, it shouldn't be an issue.

Q: 2. How many light steps does it represent?

A: The Vaxis VFX 95 IRND 2.1 Filter for Tilta Mirage Matte Box would reduce the light by 7 stops.

Q: 3. Does this go with the NiSi 82mm Swift VND Mist Kit 1-9 Stops (1-5-Stop VND, 4-Stop ND, Black Mist 1/4)?

A: The NiSi 82mm HUC PRO Nano IRND 1.8 Filter (6-Stop) can be used on any lens or filter that has an 82mm filter thread. It does not use the Nisi Swift Friction Mount System.

Q: 4. Does the IR cut cause vignetting on wide angle lenses? I'd like to use this on the Tokina 11-20mm.

A: You may get some vignetting on the wide end.

Q: 5. What Filter Thickness is? 2 or 4 mm?

A: Haida 4 x 5.65" V-Pro Series MC IRND 0.6 Glass Filter (2-Stop) are 4mm thick.

Q: 6. Does this filter fit inside Tilta Mini Matte Box 82mm adapter ring?

A: Yes.

Q: 7. Can this filter be used for solar eclipse photos?

A: No, the NiSi 77mm PRO Nano IRND 3.0 Filter (10-Stop) would not provide enough coverage for solar eclipse photography. You need at least 16 stop ND, preferably with UV/IR cut. Nisi has the following option. https://bhpho.to/3vaPO0g

Q: 8. I have a mirrorless camera that I had converted for IR photography; regular ND filter do not have any effects on exposure; I want to shoot IR with long exposure, will this NiSi IRND do the job?

A: No, the NiSi 82mm PRO Nano IRND 3.0 Filter (10-Stop) would not be compatible for your usage needs. It does the opposite of what you are looking for; it is designed to block IR to the extent that there will not be infrared pollution when taking a long exposure. As an alternative, the filters in the NiSi Swift FS ND Filter Kit (82mm), B&H # NIRFSNDSWK82, are designed to pass all wavelengths of light evenly, so this would also be an alternative for your usage needs. Also, as standard neutral density filters pass along infrared light unless it specifically indicates it has IR reduction, a filter such as the Hoya ProND EX 1000 Filter (82mm, 10-Stop), B&H # HOPNDEX1T82, should also work for your usage needs. https://bhpho.to/3ieQ30o https://bhpho.to/3LZm8bn

Q: 9. Does this have a front filter thread?

A: Yes, Kolari Vision Pro IRND Filter (95mm, 2-Stop) has 95mm front and back threads to connect filters and lens cap in front.

Q: 10. Would combining one of these with the Tilta Mirage's VND filter cause issues? I realize these are IRND and the VND is not, but I'm thinking I may sometimes need more than the 2.7 stops the VND offers.

A: Using the Vaxis VFX 95 IRND 1.5 Filter for Tilta Mirage Matte Box with another ND filter will increase internal reflections from the layers of glass, but it can be done.

[95 mm] For the price, gotta love it. Have not noticed color cast, but have not formally tested this against Schneider/Tiffen, etc.

[95 mm] The TIFFEN soft-grad 0.9 was backordered so I ended up buying this one instead and I did not regret one second. High quality glass, better pouch than TIFFEN and does the same job. I'm super happy with it!

[95 mm] Put these on a Red Komodo during an exterior. Immediately saw the difference.

[Glass] Love that there is no color shift. Best bang for buck option imho.

[Glass] If you have a Sony or Canon camera with internal ND's, I find this necessary. I constantly find the minimum ND on Sony's VND system too strong. I now carry ND3 for the Mirage, and also a PV size ND3.

[Glass] Not much to say. These NDs do the job and they do it well. Virtually 0% color cast. Just wish Tilta would and Vaxi would just price this alittle bit higher and include a tray with it. It would be awesome to not shell out $40 everytime l. Because the reality is you need a tray for every filter. These filters are way to delicate to be taking them out on a shoot day. You need to be able to quickly swap these but Tilta has a home run system. It's just not the cheapest as each filter is like $52 and then the trays are $40. I would gladly pay $70 for a filter with a tray. Come on Tilta Vaxis. MAke a bundle I can buy

[0.5 lb] I'm very happy with the Tilta Mirage matte box, largely due to the affordable filter options from Vaxis. The IRND filters are more neutral than the variable ND option, and also reduce IR pollution (red tone in shadows). At the affordable prices they are, there is little reason not to own a few IRND filters.

[95 mm] I use this filter with Tilta Mirage Matte Box. 4 stops is perfect for my needs when I shoot outdoors and helps me keep my lens wide open. I highly recommend this Vaxis filter.

[Glass] So far both my Vaxis IRND filters have been flawless, love the leather sleeve they come with. Just wish the darn thing things came with a tray as you need those trays. These filters are way to delicate to be swapping them during a shoot day
