Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can I pair this up with a Canon R6?

A: Yes, you will need an HDMI cable to connect the Canon R6 and Video Assist Monitor.

Q: 2. is there a sunhood available for this?

A: At this point we do not carry a hood specifically for the Video Assist. However the monitor has not yet been released so 3rd party manufactures have yet to create a lot of accessories for it, but eventually they will. Please keep an eye on our website for updates and new releases as they become available.

Q: 3. I'm hoping to use this to put in between a lap top running power point and a projector to document the presentation with this device while I film the speaker with another. Sounds like with the internal looping this would work. Any pitfalls? Also if a speaker has old VGA laptop, I assume there is a converter but wondering if any other surprises to this approach?

A: Works great to do screen capture on Mac with hdmi out... I mention Mac because Ive tested and the hdmi output options on macs are great for changing between interlaced and progressive etc so the files dont look jumpy when you play them back.

Q: 4. is it possible to use an external drive instead of the SD cards?

A: The 3G models do not support external drive recording on the USB. You should consider the 12G models.

Q: 5. Anyone find a good option for storage and transport to keep the device safe?

A: There are many hard case options for the Video Assist display. A good choice to consider is this custom model. B&H # JABMVA4KRE https://bhpho.to/3VzkAbs Another idea that is more form fitting for the display could be - Pelican 1400 Case with Foam (Black) BH #PE1400FB https://bhpho.to/3sbgDwk

Q: 6. Is this an IPS monitor? Or a TFT monitor with 6-bit?

A: This is a newly announced unreleased item whose specs are subject to change at any time. When it actually arrives, we will have a much better idea of what it has and how it does what it does.Since the BM Video Assist is touch screen, that suggests to me that it is IPS since non IPS screens show tailing when touched. We shall see soon.

Q: 7. what is power consumption?

A: Blackmagic actually does not list the power draw of the Blackmagic Design Video Assist monitors, most likely because the power draw varies depending on a number of different variables. There is an optional 12VDC power supply and the screen can be powered with larger production batteries with DTAP to barrel or dummy NPF battery.

Q: 8. In the product images the Video Assist has a histogram displayed. Does this monitor support other scopes: false color, vector, etc?

A: At this time, outside of histogram, audio meters, timecode display, and more it is not known exactly what the Blackmagic Video Assist will display. Please watch the B&H website for updates as they are known.

Q: 9. Will it do 4k@30?

A: No, it will only support 3G video up 1080p60.

Q: 10. I have the Lexar 64GB Professional 1000x UHS-II SDXC card listed in the recommended accessories section. The Video Assist says no card when it's inserted. How can I fix this?

A: Blackmagic states that UHS-II cards are not compatible with this device. However, they also indicate that the 600x Lexar cards should be able to record 1080p at 30 frames, but not 60. Others have indicated that the Lexar cards don't work at all.

[Monitor] This does everything it says it'll do. I'm not a professional. This was purchased to record a broadcast. The pass-through port is what went out. Quality is excellent. Room was warm and one of our cameras had some issues. However, this unit was in use for more than two-hours straight and did not complain at all. Image quality is insane. Glad I spent more for the 7 model.

[1.5 ft] This is an amazing monitor, chock full of great features. The screen is super-sharp, which gives us a leg up on camera focus, and the focus assist utility is amazing. Having both SDI and HDMI options gives us much needed flexibility, and the onboard SD card recording capability is a huge win.

[75 Ohm] I LOVE the screen. It's fantastic and it makes me wish I had one this good for watching college football. It is super clear, great color, very bright. The touch interface works very well and is super intuitive. I'm pretty sure anyone who has used a phone from this century could find exactly what they need. Histogram is nice, audio meters are nice, simple battery meter. There is only one SD card slot so that may be a problem for some, also the card capacity is not on the 'home' screen. It is a single swipe away but may annoy some. You will need fast cards to record on. As a non-scientific example I recorded onto SanDisk Extreme (45MB/s) at 1080p 59.94 in ProRes just fine but dropped frames with ProResHQ. I feel a little anxious about having a fan on the back. I'm worried about how it will do if dirt or water gets in; the noise is minimal. So if you're looking for a magic wonder box that can scale, focus assist, make you a latte and generally hold your hand then this probably isn't for you. If you're looking for a inexpensive way to record high bit-rate video then it's hard to beat. I own quite a few BMD products and it is my experience that they keep getting better over time. Firmware updates add features and suddenly my investment has become more valuable. I expect that from this product but I guess only Grant Petty knows for sure. I don't usually like to review products that I've only had for a few days but since there are so few of these in the world I'm hoping to be of some help to those of you considering a purchase. *I have been testing with an FS100

[1.5 ft] Great monitor and recorder with big possibilities. HDMI and SDI inputs/ outputs, big variety of recording formats, very good monitor, too. Very good option for the price.

[1.5 ft] Works very well, makes it so I can record my laptop on the go without a performance hit. Eventually I may use on a camera, but for my needs currently, works well.

[75 Ohm] I use this, coupled with an analog to digital converter, to record the output of my old consumer video cameras for my YouTube channel.
Yes, it's overkill, but it makes recording video from old cameras fun and hassle free. Once I have the files recorded, I can easily transfer them right away into my computer for editing purposes. You will also need to purchase a BlackMagic analog to digital converter to go with this. The BMD Video Assist is the the Swiss Army Knife of video recorders! My only regret was not getting the 12G model.

[6G-SDI / audio] cool size, very good quality allover, getting pretty warm during operation.
I'm just missing an adaptor cable for the special SDI-connectors, or at least a clear indication to the necessary accessory...

[6G-SDI / audio] I've had this monitor now for 2 weeks, and I've used it on one shoot. The cameras I've used it with are a Nikon D810 and a Blackmagic Pocket Camera. As with the BMPCC and other Blackmagic products, it's already an excellent product, but I expect that it will improve further with firmware updates. And also as with the BMPCC, I don't know of anything else that can compete for quality at the price. So far: * The image quality on the monitor is excellent in terms of sharpness. I bought this primarily to judge focus, and it delivers even without a peaking feature (which I expect is coming). Color is not accurate, but that's true of most other products at this price level. I hope that color improves with software. * Solid build quality. The only monitor of comparable build in this price range that I know is the slightly pricier SmallHD DP4. * The SDI and HDMI inputs. While I wish it had the more robust locking full-sized SDI, there are very few monitors with SDI capability AT ALL at this price level, and the only option I tried had a very poor image. * The built-in ProRes recorder is great. It allows me to get longer record times out of my D810 (it may improve image quality as well, but I hadn't noticed). I already had invested in the appropriate cards for my BMPCC. It also was a life-saver for the BMPCC when I unexpectedly ran out of room on the card I had in the camera-- I just started the recorder just before the card ran out, seamlessly joined the clips into one long clip in my editing software. So I'll look forward to updates that enable additional features (peaking, perhaps more exposure tools) and hope that one also improve color accuracy. But I can already recommend this device wholeheartedly at this price level. Your choice is really probably just about whether or not you need to step up to a unit that can record 4k.
