Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Which Translum weight would work best to diffuse the narrow beam of light produced by Rotolight Neo 2 LEDs when using them for tabletop photography?

A: The Translum in the medium weight would be just fine.

Q: 2. how does this compare to vellum as far as transparency is concerned?

A: I've never used vellum but I have used this translum 2 ways. As a backdrop for headshots with a softbox placed directly behind and one in front to light my subjects. The backlight is just perfect for this and illuminates the subject perfectly. I've also used it with backlight only for maternity sillouhettes and it works great for that as well. It seems to be very durable but you do have to be careful not to crimp or bend it as it blanches out when pinched.

Q: 3. Which has a better "white" result? Having two strobes using a white backdrop from the front? Or using one strobe from behind the Savage Translum backdrop?

A: Having two strobes using a white backdrop from the front. also have some v-flats so there is no light leak

Q: 4. Could this double as a standard white backdrop when not using it to diffuse light through it?

A: You can use it as a background.

Q: 5. Would Expan Drive Set work with this roll? Thank you in advance.

A: You can use Expandrives with this.

Q: 6. How long? Specs don’t say.

A: It is 17.7" long.

Q: 7. How well does this matte black vinyl take a gridded light to create a vignette effect in a portrait? All the photos I've seen don't have it lit. Wondering if a light angled up at it would create too much of a shine or noticeable pattern due to the slight pattern in the vinyl.

A: This background could work well with a light that has a grid attached but as far what effect you will get, that all depends on which degree the grid has. With that being said, it would be best to experiment with different grids until the desired effect is obtained. While the background is textured to some extent, you may not notice that if you're shooting at a shallow depth of field.

Q: 8. Can one of the legs be adjusted for closer quarters?

A: The Back leg can can be shorten for close quarters.

Q: 9. Will these work on a wall-mounted roller system, like the Impact wall mounting kit? If so, what's the diameter of the tube these come on (for getting some PVC pipe)?

A: Savage lists their vinyl background as having a cardboard core which measures about 2.1 on the inside. If using it with the Impact Wall Mounting Kit, the Vari-Drives in that kit would insert into the cardboard core to help suspend it up onto the wall hooks.

Q: 10. I want to mount this on the wall up high using the chain pull down mechanisms sold by manfrotto. Will the roll be able to be supported by the manfrotto three roll wall brackets? What is the diameter from center of roll to edge rolled up? I probably wont have any other rolls on the brackets so just want to know if it will fit (due to diameter rolled up) and will the brackets hold it?

A: It is highly recommended to add a Manfrotto 047-2 Alu-Core for Uncored Paper or Cloth - 9' (2.7 m) B&H # MA0472 in place of the cardboard core supplied with the roll. This will reduce any risk of bowing in the center of the roll while mounted on the wall with a Manfrotto Expan Drive. Otherwise, the cardboard core measures 2.125 as per the manufacturer.
