Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. how does this compare to vellum as far as transparency is concerned?

A: I've never used vellum but I have used this translum 2 ways. As a backdrop for headshots with a softbox placed directly behind and one in front to light my subjects. The backlight is just perfect for this and illuminates the subject perfectly. I've also used it with backlight only for maternity sillouhettes and it works great for that as well. It seems to be very durable but you do have to be careful not to crimp or bend it as it blanches out when pinched.

Q: 2. Has anyone used this professionally? Setting up, taking down. Does it wrinkle? Do you have more than one? The description says the color may vary between runs. How much does it vary?

A: This type of background is meant to be set up and left in a space, but it can rolled up without wrinkles. We have not experienced any variation in color among our current stock.

Q: 3. Will this work for a cake smash where I want this to be a backdrop and floordrop?

A: Yes this can work for application as you can easily clean it with soap and water.

Q: 4. Best economical way to temporarily hang a wall? Velcro? hooks in drywall? thanks!

A: My DIY material background hanging system consists of eye bolt screwed into opposite walls using wall anchors. I then string two strands of picture hanging wire; starting with one bolt, looping through the other, and then back to the first and securing. I use the binder clips (medium or large) - the things that are used to clip a stack of papers together. I place the clip over the wire and clip the background ever 6 - 8 . I have 2 or 3 backgrounds on each wire. I simply slide the background that I want to use into position. I have 3 wires to hold all my material backgrounds. They remain wrinkle free; very easy to change. I also installed stretchers (adjustable Velcro with alligator clips) on both walls - just thumb tacked - to make the material taught.

Q: 5. Which has a better "white" result? Having two strobes using a white backdrop from the front? Or using one strobe from behind the Savage Translum backdrop?

A: Having two strobes using a white backdrop from the front. also have some v-flats so there is no light leak

Q: 6. Hi,Is this some kind of a film or what?

A: It is vinyl sheeting of probably 6mil+ thickness. It is not a thin film. Think more like a fabric shower curtain.

Q: 7. Does the vinyl reflect speedlight flash if using either a white card or diffuser?

A: Not really. With enough direct lighting you MIGHT get a little, but you're more concerned with shadow..... So much depends on distance and angle of your light source.

Q: 8. I'm getting sagging wrinkles in mine. It's hanging from an Impact wall mounting kit but weather I'm hanging just enough so it's not touching the floor, or pulled all the way out so it's covering the floor and wall, I still get sagging wrinkles. Fortunately these aren't showing up in the photos as I'm blowing out the background, but they definitely would show up if I weren't. I tried clamping the edges to a C-stand to pull it taught and that helped a bit but it would have taken several clamps to get it fully clean. Am I doing something wrong, or is this normal, or ? Thanks!

A: I use mine only to blow out the background - not gray yet. I have only noticed my crossbar sagging ever so slightly - if I changed the light setup to get gray I don't feel the amt. of sagging would be a problem for me. I can't tell you that you are doing anything wrong - just share what I have done/experienced. My guess is your cross bar is not strong enough. I do use clamps to pull a different colored canvas more tight but not the white vinyl - works-ish but is a pain (I feel your pain). I use the photoflex background holder and keep it as close to 9' wide as possible (9' + couple inches. This crossbar system isn't perfect for other reasons, but what is, right?) I did see a photo of a photogs setup where he used a length of wood as his crossbar held up by 2 stands - no sagging at all. I also wonder if your stands are a lot more than 9' apart causing more sag. I have left mine on the cardboard core. One last thought: If mine did sag and that showed in the resulting photos I'd be tempted to put an extra stand in the middle, behind the background to hikeup the center just a touch . . . maybe with a speedlight foot on the top as not to damage the roll . . . does any of this help? I love this backdrop -- all the best!

Q: 9. Will these work in a Sony stand alone cd recorder to record music?

A: Yes they will.

Q: 10. Can anyone recommend a way to mount this to cinder block wall?

A: Direct duct tape and frame that out of the shot, or, if you need every millimeter, duct tape circles behind, across the back of the top.
