The 1.2TB 10K RPM SAS-3 2.5" SC Enterprise HDDfrom 1.2TB 10K RPM SAS-3 2.5" SC Enterprise HDDis designed for servers and storage solutions with mission-critical work and high workload intensive applications where 24/7 duty cycles are a requirement, such as database and high transaction level applications. This drive has a capacity of 1.2TB, a rotational speed of 10,000 rpm, a SAS-3 12 Gb/s interface, and a 2.5" / 15mm form factor. It comes installed in a Hot Plug SmartDrive carrier, which helps to enable a more balanced system architecture for unified storage, improved performance, and greater reliability. HP SmartDrive is also able to handle larger amounts of data, reduce overall initialization times, and protect against multi-day outages and data loss.

HP SmartDrive is compatible with Gen8 and Gen9 HPE ProLiant Servers, and maintains backward compatibility with existing standard hot plug carriers to provide support for HPE ProLiant G7 and earlier servers and storage enclosures. This SAS drive is protected by a limited 3-year warranty, regardless of the warranty period for the system in which it is installed.

It comes well packaged with mounting screws for those who need that (not required if you're using it with the old Mac Pro titanium series). Durable materials that doesn't seem flimsy or of poor quality. Open the lid and slot in the SSD drive, close the lid and off you go. When closing the lid you might get the feeling that the drive might not connect the SSD drive properly into the internal socket, but it works fine nonetheless. I bought two for my Mac Pro (2009 model) and I'm very happy with the choice. 5

[1.1 lb] I decided to populate my newest 24-slot Synology NAS setup with a mix of these babies and their smaller kindred rather than pay exorbitant prices for the OEM drives... and I've been extremely happy with the result. A simple patch to the system supported drive database (search GitHub for Synology_HDD_db) stops DSM (currently 7.2.1.) from complaining about them and they've run flawlessly as fully supported drives for months. (Note: some DSM updates may require a repeat application of the regularly updated patch, so installing it as a scheduled repeating task may be desirable.) 5

[3.7 ms (Read)] ... I installed Windows 10 64 bit on my PC. Nothing hot swap about it now that I can find. Under Windows 7 64 bit it was genuinely hot swap. It was the simplest thing to install and use. With Win 10 I need to power off the PC, remove the HDD installed, insert the required HDD and power on again. I can't find a solution so this is a last resort :-( . From what I've found it is a problem with Win 10 not the device. Nonetheless, with 4 HDDs ranging from 3 to 6 TB, it is a pain in the sitting apparatus it won't hot swap now. If there is a solution I'd love to know what it is. 5

[3.7 ms (Read)] Got 6 of these drives. They run cool and quiet. if using windows, just note that 20TB (Terabytes) is 18.189TiB (Tebibytes) in windows. Drives are quoted by manufacturers in decimal units. so in reality my RAID setup is much smaller than I was planning for. 5

[3.7 ms (Read)] This is my 2nd one of these drives. I use them for Super Duper bootable backups of my IMac internal hard drive, as a fail safe for Time Machine. I use them with an external drive sled connected via USB 3. Seem to work well, and get very little wear as they are only turned on when a backup is made. 5

[1.1 lb] I'm on my 8th drive and knock on wood no issues or failures. I've purchased from X16, X18, and now X20 series. They've been flawless. I'm using mine in NAS setups and they see a consistent workload pretty much 24-7. These are designed for data centers so no concerns. They are noisy for hard drives. If noise is a concern the Iron Wolf series is quieter. But Seagate claims twice the mean time between failures for Exos so it's worth it in my opinion. The internet seems to hold the Exos line in high esteem so I felt the was the best option for me. Read write performance varies based on workload but in my setup doing file transfers I've seen single disk speeds of 265MB/s read and 170MB/s write. That's about the limit of my setup so I can't speak to what your results will be. The onboard cache seems to be plenty. I know other disks are moving to larger caches but I'm not sure if it's needed for a single actuator drive. I've got 150hrs+ on this drive so we're probably out of the risk zone of dead in a day or two problems with HDDs. I have thousands of hours on the X18s and X16s. And much of that is write cycles. I highly recommend Exos for any kind of storage use case. For instance this unit I placed in a 3.5in external enclosure for portable storage. And it still came in less than what some 20TB external drives sell for. Plug for the NOVUS usb enclosure. It's a great box for these or any other 3.5in HDD. 5
