Filled with helium instead of regular air to help reduce power consumption, the HP 8TB 7200 rpm SAS-3 3.5" Internal Hard Drivefrom HP 8TB 7200 rpm SAS-3 3.5" Internal Hard Driveis designed for servers and storage solutions where high capacities are required, along with moderately-priced reliability and performance for non-mission critical, low workload applications, such as disk backup, archival, and reference applications. Additionally, its Advanced Format 512e means it is intended for servers and storage solutions that are 4K aligned. This drive has a capacity of 8TB, a rotational speed of 7200 rpm, a SAS-3 12 Gb/s interface, and a 3.5" form factor. It comes installed in a Hot Plug SmartDrive carrier, which helps to enable a more balanced system architecture for unified storage, improved performance, and greater reliability. HP SmartDrive is also able to handle larger amounts of data, reduce overall initialization times, and protect against multi-day outages and data loss.

HP SmartDrive is compatible with Gen8 and Gen9 HPE ProLiant Servers, and also maintains backward compatibility with existing standard hot plug carriers to provide support for HPE ProLiant G7 and earlier servers and storage enclosures. This SAS drive is protected by a limited 1-year warranty, regardless of the warranty period for the system in which it is installed.

HPE Server SAS Hard Drives deliver high reliability for mission-critical applications.

Helium drives are filled with helium instead of regular air, resulting in less power consumption.

Robust SAS interface for increased performance.

HPE Smart Carrier for HPE ProLiant Servers (both Gen8 and Gen9 are supported). They maintain backward compatibility with existing standard hot-plug carriers to provide support for HPE ProLiant G7 and earlier servers and server storage enclosures.

They are well suited for transaction processing, database applications, analytics, high-performance computing, and business applications.

When used in conjunction with a SMART Array Controller and Systems Insight Manager, the SMART-capable firmware in HPE hard drives enables extensive fault prediction capabilities. If potential problems develop in one of the drives, the Smart Array Controller, Systems Insight Manager, and/or SMART hard disk drive lets you know in advance so you can have the drive replaced, before it fails, under warranty.

To support HPE hard drives exceeding 2.2TB, HPE Smart Array Firmware version 5.0 or later is required for the following controllers:

  • HPE Smart Array P212 Controller
  • HPE Smart Array P410 Controller
  • HPE Smart Array P411 Controller
  • HPE Smart Array P711m Controller
  • HPE Smart Array P812 Controller

To use hard drives exceeding 2.2TB, you must create a boot volume using offline ACU version 8.75 or later. HPE Smart Array controllers do not support boot volumes exceeding 2.2TB.

[8.5 ms (Read)] What can I say, it's solid and reliable and fast. Great for backups, archives, and high volume video work where SSD's of similar size will be over the top expensive or non-existent.

[8.5 ms (Read)] Bought 2 drives and installed as Raid 1. Unlike previous versions of Windows which required hours to partition and format, Win10 took 1 or 2 minuets and everything was up and running. I do a lot of photo editing and I offloaded least used archives from my SSD to the HDD Raid. The drives are fairly quiet and tolerable transfer rates if I need to get to any archived photos. This system replaced 2 aging external drives and I am very happy.

[8.5 ms (Read)] The disk is quiet and fast. But I suppose that it is designed for a rack mount, because two of the mounting holes do not line up with the holes in my 2013 Mac disk plate. I have used just two screws, and it seems OK.

[8.5 ms (Read)] I purchased two of these for installation in my customer's 2009 Mac Pro. Due to the newer screw hole pattern, I also had to buy two OWC Hard Drive Brackets for Mac Pro, which were easily located after doing a Google search.
The new brackets were easily attached to the hard drives and slid smoothly into the Mac Pro. I cloned my customer's 4 TB of data to one of the drives and then configured the other as a backup drive. Right off the bat, I noticed a much speedier boot time and smooth application launches. The computer seems much snappier now. I was happy that B&H has these in stock, as much of the other resellers offered OEM versions that only carry a 1 year warranty since they were pulled from other hardware before selling. These drives came brand new and definitely carry the full 5 year warranty.

[8.5 ms (Read)] I used this to replace one of my aging WD Green disks, along with a 1TB Seagate Iron Wolf. Out of the two Seagate disks, this one's my clear favourite due to operating noise. This one makes essentially "regular" soft ticking sounds when seeking - the Iron Wolf, by contrast, makes some rather annoying clicking sounds.

In terms of performance they seem pretty close though.
