This 85 x 85mm Hitech Firecrest ND Filter Solar Photography 85x85mm 13-Stopis a solid neutral density filter providing a 13-stop reduction in exposure. This 3.9 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or longer shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

The design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors and promote nearly flat attenuation of visible, UV, and infrared light. Due to imaging sensors' greater susceptibility to infrared light, compared to traditional film, color casts can occur when photographing darker subjects that require increased exposure times. This filter provides a high level of neutrality across all three spectrums in order to eliminate color casts and ensure cleaner, truer blacks.

Applied to the outside of the SCHOTT Superwite glass construction is a 15-layer Firecrest multicoating, which helps to minimize reflections and flare in order maintain truer colors and contrast. The multicoating is also scratch resistant and hydrophobic to benefit the overall durability of the filter. It measures 3.3 x 3.3" / 85 x 85mm and is 0.08" / 2mm-thick, making it compatible with the Formatt Hitech 85mm Filter Holder.

This filter is designed specifically for photography applications. This filter is not suitable for direct solar viewing with the naked eye, including with optical viewfinders.

ND 3.9 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.

Providing a 13 stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible and UV wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.

The 15-layer Firecrest coating has been applied directly to the outside of the filter glass by way of a vacuum-formed, hard-coated, electrolytic process. The multicoating is water and scratch resistant for greater overall durability.

SCHOTT Superwite glass promotes maintained image clarity and its 2mm-thick design is compatible with the Formatt Hitech 85mm Filter Holder.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this filter suitable for the upcoming eclipse 10/14/23?

A: The Tiffen Solar ND Filter (95mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) (B&H# TI95CND54) is absolutely suitable for photographing any annular solar eclipse such as the one on October 14, 2023 (and future such annular solar eclipses), as well as any total solar eclipse such as the one on April 8, 2024 -- and later ones, too, in 2026, 2028, etc. As with any similar photography (rather than optical viewing) style filter, the image would then be viewed using electronic means such as in digital live view mode when using a DSLR (rather than using the optical viewfinder) or with any mirrorless camera using its digital viewfinder or rear digital screen.

Q: 2. Will this filter fit the Nikon AF-S 200-500mm 1:5.6E ED lens?

A: Yes the Tiffen Solar ND Filter (95mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition)with fit the Nikon 200-500mm lens.

Q: 3. Is this intended for solar shooting?

A: The Haida 77mm NanoPro One Million X Edition Filter is a 20 stop filter and any filter over 16 stops is safe for solar use.

Q: 4. Does this meet the ISO 12312-2 standard?

A: The Tiffen Solar ND Filter (58mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) is not ISO 12312-2 compliant.

Q: 5. Why the notice that this solar filter is not safe for solar viewing???

A: The Tiffen Solar ND Filter (95mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) is designed for photographic use and is not intended for use as a viewing filter. It will protect the camera sensor, not the human eye.

Q: 6. Does this filter have front threads for attaching a screw-on lens hood? I intend to use it with a 600mm mirror lens.

A: Yes, the Tiffen Solar ND Filter (95mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) has 95mm front threads.

Q: 7. Will this 43mm solar filter fit these Canon lenses: RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens ; RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM Lens?

A: The Tiffen Solar ND Filter (43mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) is too small to thread in to both of the lenses mention above. This filter is design to fit a front thread of 43mm only. Your Canon RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM Lens has a 77mm front thread while Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM Lens has a 67mm front threads. Tiffen makes the same filter in both of size.

Q: 8. How is it ok for shooting the sun but not for viewing with the naked eye? How do you compose & shoot without viewing the frame?

A: The camera is not as sensitive to infrared and uv from the sun like the naked eye is. You can compose and shoot using the LCD live view.

Q: 9. Hello, given that this product's filter factor is 1,000,000; does this imply ND20 and is this appropriate for solar photography?(e.g solar eclipse) the price seems fairly low for such high filtering power.

A: Yup! Indeed, this is a 20-stop filter. Perfect for solar photography!

Q: 10. Is this Solar filter ISO 12312-2 certified?

A: Unfortunately, the Tiffen Solar ND Filter (95mm, 18-Stop, Special 50th Anniversary Edition) is not ISO 12312-2 certified. It should not be used to look directly at the sun with our eyes. It can be used for the camera to take a photo of the sun. Look only in the LCD live view to compose the photo. Do not look in an optical viewfinder.
