The Tiffen 77mm Black Diffusion/FX 1 Filterdiffuses strong light entering the lens and produces a glowing effect. While the resulting image appears softer and ethereal, there is little loss of clarity or detail. This filter works by diffusing the light entering the lens with small aberrations; by spreading the light more evenly, a soft glow is created rather than the sharp, well-defined image when shooting without a filter. This filter has a 1 density, providing a small amount of softening.

Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hi, I just bought this filter from BH, and I realized that ours is not receiving the 77mm filter in front of HBM filter. Is it normal? This means that, I cannot use any ND fader or any additional diffusion in addition to this filter. Let me know. Thanks.

A: That is correct; the filter does not have front threads.

Q: 2. Will this filter screw into a 67-82mm step up ring and can another filter be stacked/screwed into the 82mm Schneider...?

A: Yes this will screw into 67-82 step up ring and it does have front thread

Q: 3. I want to achieve vivid, saturated colors in scenes with lots of natural light. Will this filter help me with that?

A: The use of hte Tiffen 82mm Variable Neutral Density Filter is to reduce the amount of light getting to through the lens. Many use this to shoot wide open and or at a very slow shutter speed. It is not made to increase saturation.

Q: 4. The image you show for 4X5.65 looks like 4X4 since it is a square. Is 4X5.65 coming for sure if I order?

A: I agree that the image looks square, but I can assure you the filter we will send you is 4x5.65 I cross referenced the Mfr# with Schneider to make sure.

Q: 5. Could I have a look of the other side of this filter.I wonder what is written there.

A: On the other side of the filter it says Schneider Kreuznach and the filter size.

Q: 6. Does it work for 18-35mm Sigma Lens ? Blackmagic6kg2?

A: Yes Tiffen 72mm Variable Neutral Density Filter is compatible with Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens for Canon EF

Q: 7. will this work with my factory standard zoom (for 5Dmark3) Canon 24-70mm lens?

A: If you own the original Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L EF USM lens, or the new Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens, B&H # CA24704LIS, both use 77mm filters and would work with the Tiffen 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter listed above. However, the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM Lens, B&H # CA247028LII, uses 82mm filters, and would not be compatible with the above filter.

Q: 8. Can I mount this on top of a circular polarizing filter? Is there a downside to doing that?

A: The Tiffen VND filter consists of two circular polarizing filters...two CP filters together create the VND effect. Mounting this on top of a circular polarizing filter may cause some undersired effects such as cross polarization, vignetting in addition to difficulty adjusting the two filters as both turn and are adjusted by hand... if you mount the CP, then the VND it would be difficult to control both as they are turning. We recommend using a straight ND and then a CP instead.

Q: 9. does it work in film cameras the same way as changing white balance in digital cameras?

A: The Tiffen 77mm Digital HT 812 Warming Filter is designed to be used with digital cameras.

Q: 10. Does this filter work on a sony 70-200mm lens?

A: It depends which Sony 70-200 it is. If it is Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS II Lens then Tiffen 77mm Variable Neutral Density Filter will work because that lens does accept 77mm filters.

[77 mm] I have mainly been using the filter to soften the portraits I take because I print straight from the memory card without using computer touch-up. I'm extremely pleased with the softening filter effects. I do make adjustments in my camera to work with the filter as in the sharpness and the coloring to suit my taste for the end results that I'm looking for in the particular portrait that I'm shooting. The results of the filter are very minor but to me that is the way it should be - just enough to take a second look at the photo without realizing why you took a second look.... The camera lens had problems AFing, the photos looked blurry more than not. I tried hard to make it work for me but NO GO.Also it is hard to find much info and samples of the filter's performance on the internet.I still plan to experiment further with the filter on other photo ops besides portraits. But I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys the challenge of producing their end results from the camera and not the computer. Thanks for reading this; I hope it is helpful.Mary Grace@

[0.2 lb] This Gold Diffusion FX 1/4 is a very nice filter to take the edge off digital. A golden glow is added with no or very little halation and I use it at outdoor parties and blond portraits.

[0.2 lb] I bought this filter for HDSLR video use. The 1/2 grade provides a very subtle diffusion effect with minimal contrast loss. Ultimately, it takes the edge off of HDSLR video and provides a very close alternative to that elusive film look.

[77 mm] I am a fine atr / abstract photographer. I use this Warm Black Diffusion filter for still life, portrait, landscape and even shots of buildings and vehicles . The color tones of my subjects are very soft...also have an almost ebony hue to them. I seldom use Photoshop...I still love using lense filters. What's not so great? I cannot think of anything right now.

[77 mm] I love these filters, and I have the FX2 on all of my lenses for wedding videography. I like how it softens faces and reduces fine textures without adding any halation or losing contrast. My only gripe would be the artifacts in the filter are pretty noticeable in the bokeh or when the lens flares, but that's easy enough to work around.

[77 mm] If you're looking at this filter you likely already know what it is for, and sure enough it does exactly what Tiffen say. Optical resolution drops down but contrast loss and halation are kept to an absolute minimum. Strangely, if you look at Tiffen's triangle of diffusion diagram you'll see they put this filter halfway between resolution reduction and halation, implying you will get some soft highlight spreading. You absolutely do not and I don't know why that particular diagram suggests it when all their text and videos say it doesn't cause halation and, as I said, in use it certainly does not.
Allegedly on wide-angle shots or when using very small apertures you may see the black dots in the image. I can't say I've noticed this myself, but I only use this for shoulder-up shots, typically 50mm, often at fairly wide apertures, so I'm not in that 'danger zone'. If you want to shot wide and stopped down, maybe take caution and check out the Digital Diffusion/FX instead, which is meant to cause the same resolution drop without the black dots getting in the way.

I've had some limited experience with some Tiffen filters having poorly-cut threads, but otherwise the construction quality has been fine. Can't guarantee you'll get a faultless one but the fault rate, in my experience, has at least been very low – about one out of twenty filters having an issue, and even then, not one severe enough to stop the filter from mounting and functioning.

[77 mm] The golden glow this filter adds is beautiful! Magnificent on sunny days and blonde or fair skinned subjects!

[0.2 lb] I got this to reduce the jaggies in video on my 6d. It does not totally eliminate them, but it definitely improves them. I haven't yet used this for portraits, but that's in the cards. when I started using this, I got the general veiling that you expect from one of the mist filters. I was disappointed. However, then I cleaned the filter thoroughly. Much much better. I think this is going to work out nicely. I bought another one for a different lens. When I pulled it from the package, it was pretty dirty, too. So my advice is to thoroughly clean your filters. You'll be amazed.
