The Radial Engineering 4-Play is designed for multi-instrumentalists who want to switch between instruments on stage. Providing four XLR pathways that can connect to their own dedicated channels on a PA, mixer, or recorder, the pedal allows you to mute all the outputs, switch instruments without audible pops or clicks, select the proper output, and beginning playing, all in a seamless manner.

For instance, if you’re playing acoustic guitar but you want to switch to a mandolin, you can do so simply by following the steps listed above. That way, you can make sure the FOH engineer has dedicated channels for each instrument (and dedicated processing on a per-channel basis), while you, the lucky instrumentalist, only need to schlep one DI to the gig.

A bright LED status indicator lets you know which channel you’re currently outputting through, so there should never be a mix-up on a darkened stage. Like many other utility pedals in Radial Engineering’s arsenal, the 4-Play provides a tuner output that can work even when the pedal is muted, so you can tune in silence.

You’ll find ground-lift switches for every output, as well as a toggle which changes the behavior of the tuner/mute switch configuration. ALWAYS ON means the tuner always receives signal; ON W MUTE outputs signal only when the mute switch is engaged, while OFF W MUTE does the opposite.

The 4-Play uses 14-gauge steel in its construction, which contributes to its reliability, as does the unit’s shielding and military-spec circuit board. These provide protection against stray magnetic fields, allowing the controls and switches to remain free from interference. To accommodate pedalboards, this pedal works with standard 9V connections, thus facilitating easy powering from your typical pedalboard power brick.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can the XLR output into a stereo pre-amp ?

A: Per the instructions: Left and right XLR outputs - Balanced low impedance (600 ohm) level outputs. Connects to mic input on mixing console. Hope that helps.

Q: 2. Are the 7.2 and 12V inputs made to accept standard 2.1mm DC cables, and can the two of them be used to power 2 seperate LP-E6 dummy batteries?

A: the specific gauge of the Dc outputs on this plate are not specified by the manufacturer. All the DC output are HOT and can be used to power multiple accessories simultaneously.

Q: 3. Does this actually mount horizontally? I see that the rod plate can be removed, but I don't see a way to re-orient that rod mount..?

A: You cannot re-orientate the mount. This will only work in a vertical orientation.

Q: 4. I have Yamaha MWC12 mixer and would like to record directly with a videa camcorder using beachtec DXA-2T. Can I use the RCA rec out or Dual TRS out to connect to this box and connect to DXA-2T via xlr cable and record stereo sound? Thanks.

A: The Radial PRO AV1 is a single channel output unit that sums the incoming stereo signal to a balanced mono output.

Q: 5. Office space has digital audio system installed like a crestron setup, with in ceiling speakers, and microphones. The setup has a USB output for audio, would this work to convert to XLR?

A: The Peavey USB-P - USB "Direct Box" for Outputting Computer Audio to PA System is designed to convert a computer's digital audio output to analog signal and is powered via its USB connection to the computer. The USB-P would not work to convert signal in a similar manner with a device that is sending signal into a computer over USB.

Q: 6. So the 1/4" thru port acts as both an output bypass and and a single channel input that sums a signal sent out the XLR output?

A: The Radial Engineering ProAV1 Passive Multimedia Direct Box (B&H # RAPROAV1) features front-panel connectors that can also be used as throughputs to allow multiple patch points. A summed mono output is available via the balanced XLR output.

Q: 7. Can you use the sync app with display sampling on a computer instead of the sync box?

A: The Philips Hue Play Gradient Lightstrip would require the Hue Play HDMI sync box https://bhpho.to/3Agy2Xz

Q: 8. The top surface has a "mono/sum" printed on it. Is there a right-side switch which sums both inputs to one of the outputs?

A: The Mono/Sum switch on the right side of the Radial Engineering Trim-Two Stereo DI with Volume Control converts both outputs to dual mono, so using either output will deliver the same exact mono signal, so you have the option of using both outputs or just one output for your setup.

Q: 9. On the Palmer PAN 02 PRO Active DI Box What would happen if you plug in a xlr balanced signal into the the input labeled xlr unbalanced?

A: You would not experience any problems if you connect a balanced signal via XLR to the unbalanced XLR input on the Palmer PAN 02 PRO Active DI Box. The input will be grounded once it is connected and there is a ground switch as well as a transformer-balanced output which helps mitigate any unwanted noise.

Q: 10. Can any of the included cables power the bmpcc 4k?

A: This includes an LP-E6 Dummy Battery Adapter Cable. You could use that to power the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K.

[0 dBu] We use ProDI's and JDI's. This one is my favorite to use because it can get a strong signal out of anything.

[113 dBu] As the audio tech at a large church in Honolulu, I have had hum occur with other DI boxes, when connecting a keyboard and bass to our Mackie audio console. The ProDI creates a clean clear signal.

[113 dBu] If you can afford it, sure, get the JDI Duplex with the Jensen transformers, but this model is a workhorse for live gigs for me. Both are well constructed. Personally, I prefer passive transformer DIs for live gigs - they're more reliable and less problematic. There are more things that can go wrong in using a 48V Direct box - some of which produce very loud pops. You can't kill these transformer equipped ones.

[20 Hz to 20 kHz] I love JDIs. This is the 3rd one. It has some great features like summing a stereo input which make it all the more versatile.

[0.03%] How does the radial R8001125 (ProRmp) (it converts a line level signal to a instrument level signal?) differ from the HOSA MIT435? Is it correct that a device using and sending a line level signal (like a mixer) is also referred to as a low impedance device (low Z)? Is it also correct that a device using and sending an instrument level signal (like a guitar effects pedal) is also referred to as a high impedance device (high Z)? In other words, a guitar pedal expects a high impedance signal as well as sends a high impedance signal. I'm getting confusing answers.
