Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What is the minimum focus distance with the STX eyepiece at 30x? Thanks!

A: The minimum focus distance with the Swarovski STX Spotting Scope Modular Zoom Eyepiece (Straight Viewing) BH #SWSTXMES • MFR #49902 is the same for the 95mm: 15.7' / 4.8 m

Q: 2. Reviewer Cynthia said "and you can't carry it attached to your tripod like you can with other scopes". Is this true? I need a scope that I can carry on the tripod constantly, and weight is not an issue. Would this scope qualify for that? Thanks for any info you can provide.

A: The scope weigh is 3 lbs. without the eyepiece. You can leave it attached to the tripod but I would not recommend it. Makes it difficult to carry.

Q: 3. Will it work on a Swarovski 25-50x W eye piece on an STS 80 HD scope? If not, what is alternative?

A: No, only on Swarovski ATX & STX Scopes.

Q: 4. Is the optical quality superior to my current 30X70 zoom? I assume so since zooms usually are inferior. Tests? Proof of image quality over zoom? If used at night for astronomy, e.g., estimating magnitudes of variable stars, will the small 2.7 exit pupil be a negative to the point "not really usable at night sky"? What about splitting the light into the two barrels? Will this also be an issue of "not really meant for nighttime sky viewing"?

A: I own both the angled 30x70 zoom lens and the binocular BTX 35x eyepieces for my 90mm Swarovski modular spotting scope. Two me they are two different tools in the tool box. The 30x70 zoom eyepiece is ideal for scoping distant birds for bird watchers (which I am), especially for distant waterfowl on a lake as you pan the 180 degree vista in front of you. This combo is also ideal for watching shorebirds. You find the ducks at 30x and if you can’t identify them, you use the zoom feature. I use the binocular eyepiece for nest watching only these days, such as Bald Eagle and Osprey nests, or Purple Martin houses. With the binocular eyepiece, the whole unit is kind of heavy and bulky so you do not want to be lugging it too far in the field. I find the depth of field and, therefore, the focus, very sensitive with the binocular eyepiece. The binocular eyepiece is not the best choice if you are sharing the scope viewing experience with others because they will have to adjust the interpupilary distance of the two lenses and possibly the adjustable rings that aid in the distance your eyes are from the lenses. Optically, both lenses are mind-blowing! I have used the binocular eyepiece at night watching birds and bats fly silhouetted in front of the full moon. It was extremely sharp and bright. I am in my late 60s and have owned and used just about every make of scope. I am an Ornithologist so watch birds for a living, for citizen science, and for pleasure, and nothing can touch the quality of this scope for bird watching. I am sorry, for astronomical endeavors, I just don’t have the experience or expertise to answer your questions.

Q: 5. Will this work on Zeiss 20x60 binocular ?

A: Unfortunately, no. The eyepiece diameters are very different.

Q: 6. Which tripod head works with the 115mm scope?

A: A wide variety of tripod heads will work with the Swarovski ATX/STX/BTX 115mm Objective Lens Module. here are (2) suggestions: Gitzo 2-Way Fluid Head BH #GIGHF2W • MFR #GHF2W or the Swarovski CTH Compact Tripod Head BH #SWCTH • MFR #49078

Q: 7. Will this eyecup fit over 1.5" diameter Swarovski Habitch armored 10X42 binocular ocular?

A: Hi John, I hope you are well today and thank you for your interest in our products. The eyecup you selected will only work with our current spotting scopes with a 20-60x eyepiece. For example, the STR 80 or ATS/STS 65 or 80 with a 20-60x eyepiece. Please contact us at 1-800-426-3089 Ext-1 to further assist you in finding the correct eyecup. Best Regards, Jacob

Q: 8. What size filter does the it take?

A: The millimeter size is 118mm The thread pitch is 0.75 B&H does not sell any 118mm filters.

Q: 9. How come the eyepieces magnification for 115 is the same as for 95?

A: The magnification is the same because magnification is not dependent on objective lens diameter. The 95mm is much less weight which comes into play for transporting then the 115mm is much bigger but brighter.

Q: 10. Is this 115mm model compatible with the older DH101 head as direct mount? Thanks.

A: Yes, this this 115mm model is compatible with the older DH101 head as a direct mount.

[0.1 lb] Very comfortable for long viewing sessions. Once you get your eyes adjusted from your previous scopes holds. Very confident in holding for mirage based wind holds. Using both eyes is a dream!

[0.1 lb] The binocular like setup makes it very comfortable In use. I paired it with the ATX 95mm objective and the image is bright even though the light is split into two paths. The image quality is as expected for a top shelf spotting scope. There is not much else I can add to ota optical performance. I will just mention a few things about it when in use.

I compared with the Leica scope in B & H and what made the sale was the focusing ring, it is so smooth and easy to grab and adjust when compared with the tiny and tight shell on the Leica Televid.

The focus aid works fine to help with aiming the acope but it seems cheap being entirely made of plastic, and the forehead rest, for me, is useless.

The BTX and 95mm ATX combination is a large scope and on the tripod, it is not very balanced when mounted on the balance rail.
It feels awful on a ballhead as it "wants" to drop off in all different sides all the time if I don't hold on to it tight while moving it around. So trying to following a moving object does not work with a ball head. It works fine on a video pan and tilt head but I think a gimball head may be better.

I am still looking for a set of tripod legs for this setup. I used a big manfrotto and a medium sized Gitzo but both have annoying vibrations. I am planning to test it on a set of wooden telescope legs.

A minor complaint: the covers for the oculars are on a leash, which is great, but that for the objective is not and I struggle to find a place to store that large front cover when in use.

[0.1 lb] I selected this objective lens to combine with the angled viewing eyepiece to primarily use with birding. This was the perfect size lens to meet most of my birding needs--it has great field of view, particularly combined with the extender. This makes viewing birds, ducks, owls, and mergansers which are quite a distance out on/over the Lake or fields--providing ability to easily identify and even see images of high detail. It is heavier than my other scope to carry long distances, particularly with the tripod, though, even as a small, older woman, it is not too difficult. I do plan eventually to get the 65mm to heft around longer distances.

[0.1 lb] I couldn’t decide on the Swarovski ATX or BTX but after much hand wringing I ordered the BTX with the 95mm objective lens and I couldn’t be happier. My biggest concern was having a fixed magnification of 35x with the BTX vs 30-70x with the ATX. My concerns were alleviated after my first use with the BTX. I took the scope on a trip to Montana and found that I could watch elk and antelope for hours in a valley below without any eye fatigue, something that I would be unable to do with a traditional spotting scope. On the 4th of July I also able to watch the fireworks over a small town that was about 10 miles away. The air bursts filled approximately 1/2 of my field of view and the colorful air bursts were razor sharp and crystal clear. The Swarovski with the BTX is simply amazing and you’re able to see more with two eyes than with just one, even with the lower magnification. Try looking through a pair of binoculars with both eyes and then use just one eye as you would with a traditional scope and you’ll find there is no comparison. If you’re on the fence like I was, just get the BTX, you’ll have no regrets.

[0.1 lb] Spectacular optics that really enhances my ability to spend time glassing with greater ease. It’s not heavy but I wouldn’t backpack it on long treks unless I was going to set up for a while. The benefits of using both eyes and not having to squint and look with just one eye is very real and definitely help the user to be much more relaxed. This is one element of my spotting scope system and I’m very happy I’ve added it. After spending some quality time behind it, I would definitely buy it again and strongly recommend it.

[0.1 lb] Excellent for general birding scope needs, light enough to carry easily. If you only get one objective, I recommend this one. Very easy to click on to ATX ocular.

[0.1 lb] The eyepiece module is like having an upscale set of binoculars with a Swarovski objective. Performance wise the package is superb. Interpupil distance is easily adjusted and there is a useful headrest. Focus does require moving your hand to the objective focus ring. Otherwise it is nearly like binoculars. There is no zoom and magnification is set at 30x. The aiming assist, a small scope to the right of the right eyepiece is outstanding at perfectly aiming the scope. The aiming assist is not protected by the SOC, but it is removable with a bit of fussing with a screwdriver. The total package with a 95mm objective is not much heavier than with the ATX eyepiece, but the BTX is significantly larger in width. In summary, a great spotting scope. My personal desired improvements would be a very slightly closer interpupil distance for use by children, and a better way of removing or protecting the aiming aid. But it still gets 5 stars.
