Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this work with any intercom system?

A: It will not work with any system. The Telex MCP90 is a gooseneck electret condenser microphone, designed for front panel connection to that company's RTS system and select Audiocom intercom stations.

Q: 2. Is the base threaded?

A: No

Q: 3. Can this be mounted without the shock mount onto a regular surface mount XLR Female (like the Neutrik NA3FDM)?

A: Yes, the Shure MX418S 18" Supercardioid Gooseneck Microphone with Preamp should be capable of mounting directly to a sturdy, compatible 3-Pin XLR female connection without the included flange mount.

Q: 4. It is not clear to me whether this mic can be made to switch on, or whether the push button has to be held the whole time. I need a mic that turns on and stays active. Question mark?

A: When you push the button it stays on

Q: 5. What is the diameter of bottom part of shock mount? In other words, what size hole should I drill?

A: Per the instructions booklet for the shock mount, 1. Drill a 44mm (1-3/4 in.) hole in desired mounting surface. 2. Mark and drill starter holes for screws, using shock mount as a template. We have the shock mount installed in a podium now, so I can't physically verify this dimension, but my memory is the instructions have this correct.

Q: 6. Will this work on a standard PA system or does it require a pre-amp?

A: This can connect to a standard XLR mic connection on a mixer. The mixer must provide 48v phantom power to run.

Q: 7. On/off switch?

A: There is not an on/off switch. It would need to either be unplugged or, preferably, muted (or turned all the way down) at the soundboard, for it to not be on. Also, this requires phantom power to operate. But all of those things are very deliberate and appropriate. Generally speaking, no mic in this class of mics anywhere has an on/off switch. Why? Because this mic is much more powerful and sensitive than a standard hand-held mic. And it is designed for picking up singers or instruments that are just out of reach to the mic anyways.. .and the act of a person just touching the mic, in a higher volume application, will easily cause a thumping sound noticeable to the audience. Again, rightly so. This is NOT suppose to have a person's mouth just a an inch or two away. That is not what this mic is for. It is for (a) recording a group of voices/instruments that are a few feet away, not inches away... so it picks up sounds that are further away than a hand held vocal mic will so. To do that, it is much more sensitive and shouldn't be touched during operation. If you have to move it during a performance, then the sound person should mute it at the soundboard during the move, your you'll hear lots of popping and cracking noises. That all being said, this is all the way it is suppose to work... if any of these things were not true, the mic wouldn't be able to accomplish its main missions very well. It does what it was designed to do VERY well at a GREAT price for the excellent quality of mic this is. i've used several of these for years and have been very happy with them.

Q: 8. Any idea how to store and transport several of these (we have 12)? I can't find any case made specifically for gooseneck microphones, at this point thinking of just buying multiple large hardshell cases and cutting out foam to somewhat fit them, not ideal or cheap but can't think of any other solution.

A: I don't really know. Ours came in a slim box and the mic was wrapped in bubble wraps.

Q: 9. Would this mic work well for Podcasting, Virtual Meetings, Speech Videos? If not, would you recommend the Shure Sm57 or Sm7b?

A: Yes and Maybe. As a podium mic, which requires 48V phantom power, this mic MAY be a good choice, providing that it is connected to a device providing 48V phantom power, an audio interface or an audio mixer (with USB out) would be required to connect this mic to a computer. Examples include: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1479273-REG/focusrite_scarlett_solo_3g_scarlett_solo_usb_audio.html https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1251143-REG/shure_mvi_a_ltg_mvi_digital_audio.html/specs The Shure SM57 or SM7B are good choices, though are less sensitive mics, so require very close proximity (3-8") to the subject. These do not require phantom power, but would still require an audio interface to a computer. These 2 mics MAY also benefit greatly by using a Cloudlifter: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1177578-REG/cloud_microphones_cl_1_cloudlifter_mic_activator.html

Q: 10. Does this microphone have a mute button feature?

A: I know this is an older question but you alter how the push button functions, so it comes from the factory as push to mute, but you can alter it to be also be push to talk or push on/off, you just open the base and slide the tiny little switch to the desired setting.

[4.15 lb] Had 6 of thee for years, need a couple of new ones. They now have a detachable pre amp so you can feed the wire thru smaller openings or use a wireless belt pack with these mics. I had made this modification to some of mine 12 years ago, it's nice that they come this way now.

[Mono] We went through several microphones before settling on the MX418DS for a podium microphone at our church. Others just didn't give us the clean sound for live streams and gain we needed for room amplification.

[End Address] I purchased this microphone on the recomendation of the B&H sales staff for use during religious services and installed it on the podium. It works very well. The sound is true, the voice clarity prefect, and the pick up when the speaker is off center from the mic is very good.

[10' / 3 m] I own a dozen of these and use them for live streaming board meetings.

[Mono] So far so good. Was not sure what to expect but the advantage we see is for public speaking.
It comes with a cardiode cartridge which it says is interchangeable with others. But don’t expect the optional ones to come with it.
But this one works well especially with the multiple heights of those giving speeches.
Since it picks up so well it doesn’t have to be moved for each person of various heights.
And yet no feedback issues with additional mics on stage.
Also it doesn’t hide the face of the one speaking.

[Phantom Power] Our church bought this mic for our second lectern and it is working really well. This mic replaced a Shure SM58 on a stand and it's better in every way--better sounding, more sensitive, easier to adjust, and more inconspicuous. It sounds very natural and it's sensitive enough to pick up all of our speakers, even the quiet ones. The 18 inch length makes it easy to adjust to our tallest and shortest speakers and it's so slim that it never gets in the way. It came with two different mounts needed to install it and the pop filter is effective even if the speaker is very close to the mic.
