The WA-412 from Warm Audio WA-412 4-Channel Mic Preamp with DIis a four-channel preamp for microphones and Hi-Z inputs housed in a 1 RU chassis. It's fashioned in the American console preamp style, providing a punchy bottom end and smooth trebles. Each channel gives you 65 dB of gain, polarity switching, a 20 dB pad, 48V phantom power, a switchable impedance selector for tonal shaping, and knobs for both input gain and output; this allows for both precise and creative gain structuring of sound. You can easily watch your signal via the on-board LED meter for every channel.

Under the hood, you'll notice that each channel uses a discrete and socketed 6-pin X520 op-amp, which helps in giving you a significant amount of headroom with minimal distortion characteristics. You'll also note the Altran input and output transformers. If you don't peak under the hood, you'll take comfort in the fact that these components are extending your low-frequency response all while maintaining a pleasurable and open sound.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. can this be repurposed and used to pre amp a playback tape head? i know this is unconventional but i just need it to work. HELP!

A: The Rolls MP13 is a mic preamp so it is designed to receive a mic level signal but the output from the playback tape head is a line level signal. It could work, as long as you can control the output level from the tape head so it does not overload the input of the preamp, unless that is the desired effect that you wish to achieve.

Q: 2. Needing a amplified microphone to do voiceover on live dvd recording?

A: You don't need it, but a pre amp is a good idea!

Q: 3. Will this preamp boost an XLR signal a further distance than without using it? I have to cover a distance of ~300ft and am trying to assure no loss of signal.

A: The Rolls Mini-Mic Preamp is not really designed for boosting signal on a long cable run. For 300 feet, you should use high quality shielded audio cables to avoid signal loss and if you do need to increase the gain without adding noise, you might want to try the Cloud Microphones Cloudlifter CL-1 Mic Activator (B&H # CLCL1) which improves signal-to-noise ratio and improves the performance of passive microphone signals by driving stronger, cleaner signals over longer XLR cable runs.

Q: 4. Since this doesn’t work for IPhone, would it still work directly plugged into your PC for recording two mics? Like on Audition?

A: The Saramonic SR-PAX1 Two-Channel Audio Mixer, Preamp, Microphone Adapter's 3.5mm output could technically be plugged into a computer's microphone jack, but this is not how it is designed to be used and you would achieve much better results by using an audio interface instead.

Q: 5. Will this work to power and amplify a condenser mic fed into a 3-way line splitter, specifically a Whirlwind SP1X3LL?

A: The Rolls MP13 is able to power a condenser mic and the output can be connected to a splitter such as the Whirlwind SP1X3LL. The MP13 however only offers 36v of phantom power and would not be recommended for mics who require a full 48v. Many mics are able to operate at a range of voltages from 9v - 52v and you should check your mics requirements before purchase.

Q: 6. what is the length (in feet) of the included cable?

A: The Gotham GAC-7 7-pin cable included with the Warm Audio WA-47 microphone is 16.4 feet long (5 meters).

Q: 7. Would this be a good stereo-pair to stream Chorus concerts on YouTube?

A: The Warm Audio WA-14SP Large-Diaphragm Multipattern Condenser Microphone (Stereo Pair), B&H # WA14SP, could work very well for choral concert recording.

Q: 8. I have just realised that these are incopatible with my Klark Teknick CT1 Mic Booster as the CT1 requires 48V phantom power and the Rolls MP13 provides 24V. Can you recommend a quiet, affordable alternative?

A: ART Tube MP Preamplifier B&H # ARTUBEMP Single-Channel Tube-Based Hand-Selected 12AX7A Vacuum Tube Variable Input & Output Gain Control Ideal as a Tube DI Box XLR & 1/4" Connections Inexpensive, Professional Performance Exceptionally Low Noise A Staple in Many Studios

Q: 9. Which Rolls preamps are battery powered?

A: NO LO SE

Q: 10. Can you specify the weight of this product in Kg? (Including box)

A: The Warm Audio WA-2A Single-Channel Tube Optical Compressor (B&H # WA2AV2) has a package weight of 11.445 lb / 5.196kg.

[14.3 lb] I did a good bit of research and am glad I decided on the Warm Audio WA-47 tube microphone. Great addition for my home studio. I'm using it for both music production and voice over. Interfacing with ART Voice Channel. Love the rich smooth sound. No limitations, complaints or areas for improvement.

[1 RU] Got one of these mics for drum recording and figured I'd double up on them as an overhead pair. They sound perfect for the job. Had an issue with the capsule on the first WA mic I got and their warranty support was quick and effective.

[27 x 21 x 6"] This little mic really shines in places that nothing else quite works. It captures transients like a small condenser, but without the extra crispiness the condenser brings. I've used it on guitars and ukuleles with a wonderful response. You can get up close without it getting boomy like most dynamics, and it doesn't capture the room noise like a condenser. Its size is also greatly appreciated... easy placement. I used it on some background vocals, too, with a nice airy/smooth result. It feels as though it's built like a tank, too. I've never used the original AKG version this was modeled after, but this new one will be cherished in my collection and used regularly!!

[4] I've been lusting after a physical LA2A for years. I actually first used one in the early 1970's in a radio station, their original market. I've tried a number of plugins, some of which aren't bad. But the weird mixture of tubes, transformers and a light bulb (panel in this case) is just hard to beat. Like all great audio gear, you may cease to notice it when it's there, but you'll truly miss it when it's not there. I have a number of wildly dynamic singers in the studio, and this just works the magic to make their vocals sit in the mix. And it makes those same vocals bigger sounding at the same time. Is it the best LA2A clone out there? I don't know since I can't test it against all the rest. But it's darn good. BTW, let me put to rest any fears about build quality, etc. This is my second (and won't be my last) piece of Warm Audio kit. Absolutely no issues with the way these beasts arrive and work. Possibly, outside of acoustic treatment, the best investment I've ever made in my studio.

[65 dB] After letting it warm up for an hour I sang into it for the first time and the tones it captured (through a UAD Neve preamp) brought a tear to my eye. It's like this mic was made just for me; I've never sounded better.

It's great on my jumbo Guild acoustic, too. I'm looking forward to putting this mic through the paces in the studio over the next few months.

Packaging is great. Build quality is great. Tone and character is amazing. On one hand I feel like I don't need any more mics in my collection after this, but on the other hand I'm really curious to check out more of Warm Audio's products... I think maybe another mic or two and some rack gear wouldn't hurt.

[4] Black Lion has done it again by making a great little preamp. I've owned Black Lion's more expensive 4-channel B173 preamp before, but I like this Auteur MKIII even more than that one because it's simpler to use and sounds just as great. Its black color and wonderful design is great to look at, too -- very beautiful. I'm very happy with this purchase.
