For this monocular the magnification is a straight 10x, hence the designation 10 x 36. A device that could be zoomed would have a designation of 10-12 x 25 or some such, meaning the magnification could vary between 10x and 12x. For this monocular you can focus at different distances- something close, something far away - but the magnification is always 10x. It is a really nice little unit we thoroughly enjoy it.
