Spanning a versatile range of longer-than-normal focal lengths, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR Lensfrom Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR Lensis a portrait to telephoto zoom offering a bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture, intuitive handling controls, and a sophisticated optical construction. This revised layout now includes six extra-low dispersion elements, as well as one fluorite element and one high refractive index element, to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and sharpness. Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings further benefit image quality by reducing lens flare for improved contrast and color accuracy and fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements protect against dust, moisture, and smudging.

Balancing the optical attributes, the lens also features a series of robust physical and handling assets, including a four stop-effective Vibration Reduction system to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. A Silent Wave Motor AF system also contributes to sharp imagery with quick, quiet, and smooth focusing performance that is suitable for both stills and video applications. Four focus buttons are featured on the lens barrel for easily activating AF Lock, and full-time manual focus override is also available. Additionally, the lens also sports a weather-sealed magnesium-alloy construction for working in harsh environments, and the removable, rotating tripod collar spins on ball bearings for smooth and quick shifting between vertical and horizontal shooting.

Designed for use with FX image sensors, this 70-200mm lens is also compatible with DX sensors where it will provide a 105-300mm equivalent focal length range.

Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and using selective focus techniques.

Six extra-low dispersion elements combine with one fluorite element and a high refractive index element to significantly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing, as well as increase contrast, clarity, and apparent sharpness for a richer image quality.

Nano Crystal and Super Integrated Coatings have been applied to lens elements to minimize surface and internal reflections for a marked reduction in lens flare and ghosting.

Fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements afford protection to the optical system.

Vibration Reduction image stabilization helps to reduce the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable handheld shooting in low-light situations. Additionally, a dedicated Sports Mode is optimized for photographing when using panning movements and a Tripod Mode suppresses subtle ground vibrations.

Silent Wave Motor affords quick, quiet, and precise autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. An internal focusing design is also used, where only the internal lens groups are moved during focusing, to maintain the overall length of the lens during use and to promote faster focusing speeds.

Four focus buttons are positioned on the lens barrel for intuitively engaging autofocus or AF Lock functions.

Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

This mechanism limits the compatibility of this lens to the following cameras: D5, D4, D3 series, Df, D850, D810, D810A, D800 series, D750, D700, D610, D600, D500, D300 series, D7500, D7200, D7100, D7000, D5600, D5500, D5300, D5200, D5100, D5000, D3400, D3300, D3200, D3100, Nikon 1 J1, J2, J3, J4 with FT-1, Nikon 1 V1, V2, V3 with FT-1, and Nikon 1 S1, S2 with FT-1.

Weather-sealed design and magnesium-alloy construction is able to withstand dust and moisture for working in harsh environments. Additionally, the zoom and focus rings have been switched compared to previous 70-200mm models, with the focus ring closer to the mount now for more natural handling and control.

Removable, rotating tripod collar spins on ball bearings to permit quick and smooth switching from vertical to horizontal shooting orientations.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. THIS NIKON 70 -200 MM F/2.8 E FL VR LENS COMPARES WITH SIGMA 70-200 MM SPORT ZOOM LENS , $2146.95 after $650 rebate VS Sigma $1499. which is $642. more , is it worth it?.

A: Yes, the Nikon lens is worth it. The optical quality is excellent and the focus is super fast and locks on the subject.

Q: 2. What is the strengths over the previous model?

A: From my usage/point of view, sharpness in general, faster auto focus and a little bit lighter. The VR is also improved but I've never tested that back to back.

Q: 3. How does this lens work with the teleconverter ? Anyone have any pictures so I can compare ?

A: The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR Lens is fully compatible with all 3 of Nikon's current teleconverters, the 1.4x, 1.7x and 2x. In my opinion teleconverters do slightly lower the optical quality of a lens as compared to using a longer (similar quality) lens. But the convenience of carrying the 70-200mm plus a small teleconverter usually outweighs the slight improvement you get from using a 2nd large and heavy longer lens.

Q: 4. Is this lens the VRII (version 2)? What year is it from?

A: This is the model that replaced the VR II. This lens was announced in August 2016.

Q: 5. Silly question here. Did anyone tried to use different hoods like HB-29 (from VR1) or HB-48 (VR2) on this lens? Does it fit well?

A: I'm sorry, I have not tried other hoods. I would caution the casual experimenter that a hood is generally carefully designed for its host lens. I should be as long and as small a diameter as possible to provide maximum shielding of extraneous light, but yet not a bit too small or too long because of vignetting. For a zoom lens, those requirements must be met at both minimum and maximum focal lengths.

Q: 6. Will the tripod collar work on a RRS BH-55 ball head?

A: You would need an Arca Swiss foot for the lens which luckily RRS does make as well (RELCF11 ). So if you use this foot with the BH-55 it would be the perfect combo.

Q: 7. fashion?

A: Yes very good image quality , a little heavy for fashion hand healed shots but excellent image quality

Q: 8. Does this lens come with caps and carry case?

A: The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR Lens includes: Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR Lens Nikon 77mm Snap-On Lens Cap Nikon LF-4 Rear Lens Cap Nikon HB-78 Bayonet Lens Hood Nikon CL-M2 Lens Case (Black) Tripod Collar Limited 1-Year Warranty

Q: 9. is this a gray market lens?

A: No. Has US Warranty

Q: 10. Is this lens internal zoom or does it extend when zooming out?

A: Internal and lightening fast.

[9, Rounded] The Nikon 70-200 is one of my favorite lenses. It works excellently for sports shooting and portraits. I carry it whenever I shoot. It's fast and excellent in low light.

I also have the older version, which is 15 years old and having some mechanical issues. The new one has changes in the control positions, but those changes are not an issue when upgrading.

[Yes] I'm not sure where to start. This is one of the best lens that I
have used. It's lighter than it's earlier version. The 4 functional
buttons are strategically placed on the upper edge of the lens can be
configured for auto lock focus or back button focus. In my opinion,
moving the zoom ring to the front makes it easier to use this lens. It
provides for better stabilization and when used in conjunction with one
of the four focus buttons makes getting your shot much quicker. I know
many will not agree with me regarding the focus ring but, by resting the
lens tripod collar your palm he lens is stabilized balanced and steady.
Using this posture places your fingers in easy reach of the forward
focus rings, You'll notice that one of the four programmable buttons are
perfectly located and make for and easy reach. The lens is super sharp
and produces super clear images and focuses much faster. I've used
this lens on an older Nikon camera and let me say when someone tells you
that better glass will make for better shots they are not kidding.

The
lens has 3 VR modes on off and sport. I always turn on VR even when
shooting from a tripod. The new sport setting is wonderful for when you
are shooting from a moving vehicle like a car, boat or train. The lens
has fluorine coating which is
said to be superior to other coatings. I have noticed that it collects
less dust and it does seem to be much more fingerprint resistant than my
other lens.

All in all this lens was a great investment and I would fully recommend it.

[f/2.8] This is the third iteration of the Nikon 70-200mm F-mount lens that I've owned over the past twenty years and I think this one is the best of the bunch. Unbelievably sharp with incredibly fast AF. It certainly isn't a small lens, and it takes up a good amount of space in my camera bag, but it goes wherever I go. Side note: I also purchased the Really Right Stuff removable foot/tripod mount for this lens for the Arca-Swiss ballhead compatibility but also because I prefer the size and balance the RRS foot provides with this lens.

[5 lb] Before purchasing I borrowed my friend's 70-200mm lens and loved it! I've had an older one for years but the quality of the images were not as sharp but when using this one it is very sharp and quick to focus which is what I need especially when shooting several wedding. I would recommend. :)

[Autofocus] This is my second 70-200 Nikon zoom lens. First one I bought used and lasted 15 years beyond. I decided to start new and give my old lens to my daughter. It still works. Just a bit slower. These are built to last.
Creamy bokeh at 200! Beautiful images. Use for all my senior shoots. B&H delivered quickly and communicated clearly throughout the order and delivery. Packaged very well.

[Yes] If you have decided you don’t need to go to mirrorless and stay with DSLR, this is the best 70-200mm lens you can get. It has many low dispersion glass elements and a fluorite element. It produces beautiful photos. This lens also has at least 4 stops of Nikon’s VR for hand holding. Combined with my D850 body I recently purchased from B&H, this is a great combination.
