Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Please, I am requesting from other serious hobbyists and pros out there: Will the Really Right Stuff Ultralight L-Plate for Nikon D850 B&H # REBD850L MFR # BD850-L ULTRALIGHT L-PLATE work with the RRS BH-55 without any additional part or adapter for a strong connection between the two parts? I will be shooting landscapes in portrait mode with a Nikon D850 (without a grip.) I do not plan to do any stitching of panoramas in post. I will be shooting just individual, carefully shot photos with a Nikon 14-24 2.8, or Nikon 20mm 1.4, plus appropriate filters. Thank you for any relevant feedback you are willing to share.

A: Yes, it will fit with the BH55 without any additional parts.

Q: 2. Does this compatible with Gitzo GT3543XLS Systematic Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod ?

A: Yes. The tripod uses a 3/8-16 threaded stud. The RRS BH-55 uses a 3/8-16 threaded insert. They work great together.

Q: 3. does this head fit manftrtto 190cxpro4 tripod?

A: This head will fit the 190CXPRO4, but the base of the head will hang over the base of the tripod.

Q: 4. Will this ballhead work with KIrk arca-swiss compatible plates?

A: Most Arca type plates like those from Kirk are compatible with this ball head.

Q: 5. Will this work on a Manfrotto BeFree? Lots of comments on how wide it is.... Manfrotto BeFree Compact Travel Carbon Fiber Tripod (Black) BH# MAMKBFRC4BH

A: Physically the RRS BH-55 head can be attached to a Befree tripod. However, due to the smaller size of the Befree and the limited weight load, it would not be recommended.

Q: 6. Is anyone using this on a Gitzo GT2545T(Series 2 Traveler)? Or too big for the tripod?

A: If you are serious about photography, this is a very good ball head. I like it very much. Of course, when you are searching this ball head, I assume you have a good tripod too, not something wobbly cost $100 level

Q: 7. Can the release plate be replaced with the Manfrotto RC-4 plate?

A: No it won't work, I just tried it on mine. The RC-4 plate is too wide for the RRS clamp and it has a profile that doesn't match up with the Arca Swiss style of the BH-55 Screw Clamp. I still use my Manfrotto systems, but prefer the RRS for heavier gear like a full size camera with battery grip and a big lens.

Q: 8. Can this be use on Robus RC-5570 Vantage Series 3 Carbon Fiber Tripod ?

A: Yes, it is compatible with the Robus 5570.

Q: 9. Will it work for lens as large as 150-600 on a6000?

A: I also use the 200-500 mm on the D850. The BH 55 will do the trick but the A600 is much lighter so it might be front heavy.

Q: 10. will this fit on a mefoto tripod ?

A: The Really Right Stuff BH-55 Ball Head connects to 3/8 threads, which is standard for most tripod legs and systems so it should be compatible with Mefoto tripod legs.

[Yes] Sturdy, solid ball head. I considered other ball heads, but decided on the RRS BH-55 because of the fast locking of the main lockdown knob and high weight it can handle.

[Ball Head] This ball head is very well built and easy to use. I have a heavy-ish DSLR and the other ball heads I used had a tendency to drop a little when framing the subject. The RRS BH-55 does not drop. In addition, it is not as high as my previous ball head, so makes a shorter package when traveling.

[Yes] IMO, the Really Right Stuff BH-55 is the best head at this price point. High quality and reliable.

[2.425 lb] I have had numerous ball heads over the past 10 years. All have failed - some fairly quickly. My last head was a nice Sirui and it held up well for about 4 years making it a good price/value. But in all honesty I think it would have gone faster had I not gotten rid of my old RB67 in 2019. This new head feels like it will support a tank. I waited about 4 months to review it as I wanted to put it through its paces. It has only gotten better as time has passed. The controls are ultra-smooth, the head is strong, the finish is holding up well to abuse, and the design is great. Consider me an RRS convert.

[1x 1/4"-20 Male] I get what is best. Promediagear and it's H1 head was my first go to choice. I was wrong. It wasn't has smooth and precise has I hope for. But after 3 shoots already I can say that this RRS-BH55 will do the job! No excuse for fixe and easy to use, on the job, head.

[1x 1/4"-20 Male] I purchased a Nikon D850, Nikon 24-70 f2.8, Nikon 70-200 f2.8, and a Nikon 200-500 f5.6 from B&H over the past year. These were all upgrades from previous camera equipment. I tried various tripod heads and was not satisfied with the stability and precision; especially with the 200-500 set up. The BH-55 head has met all my expectations. A rock solid product. The B&H service was impeccable per usual. Highly recommend the RRS BH-55 for anyone with large camera equipment.

[2.425 lb] I love this ball head! It's just what a I was looking for to replace my older ball head. It's solid and firmly holds my camera in place. I also like the size of the knobs. It took me quite a while to pull the trigger on purchasing this one, as it's quite expensive, but I decided it's likely going to be the last ball head I ever need to buy! I'm very pleased with my purchase!!

[2.425 lb] This ball head will support way more than what I can put on it. When you lock it down, it stays put - no drifting!!
Word of caution - this ball head may not work with certain after-market camera plates. I had to replace the camera plate on my Nikon D610, because the BH-55 would not lock down on it.
Other than that, no complaints. Kudos to RRS for a top-quality product!!!

[+90° to 0°] I've used a Wimberly II Gimbal head for years on a relatively heavy tripod for my Nikon 200-500mm, and wanted to find a lighter setup. I also needed a basic ball head for lenses from 24 to 300mm, primes and zooms, since I recently sold my old tripods and heads. Given all the reviews I decided to try the RRS BH-55 with the RRS #TVC-24MK2, and overall I'm very, very happy with the combo. Even with the 200-500 and D500 or D810 it locks down in any position and does not move at all. I use a Kirk lens collar and LS-2 support for the 200-500. No longer do I need to aim slightly off to counter the inevitable sag from my old ball heads.
Since most times I'm using a LowePro Flipside 400AW backpack, the tripod/head combo attaches nicely to the pack. The Wimberly, even with a lighter tripod, did not due to size and weight; I had to carry that separately.
However, I must admit that the Whimberly is by far a much easier, faster way to control a long lens, and the BH-55 will not
replace it for those times I don't mind carrying the extra weight.
The build quality of the BH-55 is absolutely incredible, and I'm just so thankful I am at a point where I can afford the luxury of this high end ball head and tripod. I just wish I had not wasted so much money on other brands, but this was not around when I really needed it... and could not afford it!
