With a lustrous pearl surface and microporous coating that is very receptive to ink, PermaJetUSA's Smooth Pearl 280 Digital Photo Paper, available here as a 100-pack of 7 x 5" sheets, is able to present images with excellent tonal ranges and vivid colors, as well as offer excellent water resistance and instant drying. The 280 gsm media features an 11.8 mil thickness, and while keeping OBA content low, manages a high whiteness of 103%. It also has a slightly warm base tint that gives the paper a more natural appearance.

A: The Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl should have a slight reflective quality on the printable side. You can also moisten your finger and touch a corner. The printable side will be slightly sticky while the back will not stick to your finger at all.

Q: 4. Is Ilford Galerie Smooth Pearl close to a matte finish?

A: No the Smooth Pearl is not close to a matte finish. It is closer to an off white Luster finish with a very dull shine.

Q: 5. is this paper double sided?

A: No, this is not a dual sided paper.

Q: 6. How does this paper compare to silver gelatin B&W paper or color RA-4 paper ? I wanted to print my film negatives at home, but I don't have the skills, neither space to have a darkroom (color printing would be almost impossible for me),so is this paper good for making inkjet prints from negatives ?

A: It would be close match to silver gelatin B&W paper.

Q: 7. Should this paper be printed with Photo black or Matte? My epson P800 automatically changes the ink to matte

Q: 8. Can this paper be used with Canon Lucia Ink on a Canon Pro 9500 Mark II printer?

A: Ilford went out of business, and the this paper is discontinued. So do not invest in any old stock left behind. For what it's worth, the Epson Exhibition Fiber is the closest match in thickness and color, but cost more. The Epson Ultra Premium Photo Luster matches color, but is a thinner paper than the Exhibition, but cost a ton less. After trying a small army of papers to replace Ilford, we settled on the Epson Ultra Luster I just mentioned.

Q: 9. is this paper double sided?

A: PermaJetUSA Ultra Pearl 295 Digital Photo Paper (17" x 98.4', Roll) BH #PEAPJ51058 is a single sided paper.

Q: 10. I have an Epson et8550 printer, is the resin/absorbing layer compatible?

A: Yes. The Hahnemuhle Photo Pearl 310 Paper is compatible with the Epson ET8550 printer.

[1.5 lb] I think this smooth pearl paper is great! I'm using it for portraits, and I love the luminosity of the skin on the paper. Highly recommended! 5

[103%] I've been using this paper for years with different Epson printers and found both the paper and profiles are quite good. It's also an economical paper considering the high quality. Most of my prints are portraits and skin tones are one of the most difficult and critical areas for achieving pleasing photography. 5

[Yes] I love the Ilford Smooth Pearl photo paper. I have been using it for years. Great quality, and it works great on my Epson 3880 printer. Great professional look, good crisp prints. The only paper I will use when I need to print in the studio. 5

[1.5 lb] I use this paper almost exclusivley for Exhibition quality Landscapes with an Epson 4800. I have found the quality of images produced using the canned Ilford profiles to be very accurate and on par or better than Epson's Premium Luster. A very high quality paper that is also cost effective. 5

[Single] This is one of the best photographic ink-jet printing papers that I've ever used for the price. Produces a professional quality print from both my Epson and Hewett Packard art printers. Nice thickness and surface quality. Accepts archival inks well with nice coverage. Renders prints compatible to traditional pearl finish studio prints. I've been using this paper for printing professional wedding photos, children's portraits and other photos with great customer satisfaction for years. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a good economical ink-jet printing paper with professional quality. 5
