This 105mm Coarse Tiffen 105mm ND Filter 1.6-Stopis a solid ND filter with a filter factor of 3x that provides a 1.6-stop exposure reduction. Its 0.5 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and then mounting to precision metal rings.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this filter reflect or does it absorb the light? I am worried about heating of the surface of the filter.

A: This is a Neutral Density filter which is designed to limit the amount of light reaching your cameras sensor. It works very similarly to a pair of sunglasses. This particular ND filter is 5 stops (1.5) meaning only 1/32 of all light passes through it. This filter is commonly used in sunlight without any issues regarding the surface of the filter heating.

Q: 2. Will this work on a Nikon 200mm F2? The filter is installed near the rear element.

A: This filter is designed to thread onto the end of a lens which has 52mm filter threads. It is not a drop in filter.

Q: 3. will this fit on a Canon XA25 & does it eliminate the subject washout I get from bright/white stage lights?

A: This filter will fit any lens which has a 58mm filter thread. The Tiffen Variable Neutral Density Filter provides two to 8 stops of light control. This means that it limits the amount of light entering your lens. By limiting the amount of light entering your lens you achieve greater control over your camera. You can do long exposures with the VND (blur moving water, clouds, etc) or use it to control your depth of field in bright sun.

Q: 4. Im looking to add this to my 17-40 mm lens for a canon 60D. While the 60D isn't a crop camera, and the lens is full frame, it still works well for me. What MM will I need and will it work?

A: This particular filter fits camera lenses with a 58mm filter thread. Please check the filter thread size on your lens to determine the correct size filter to order.

Q: 5. Why in the world would you use this awful simulated image?

A: If you don't understand what the picture is showing, then you are not qualified to use this product. ND filters are used to reduce the amount of light entering the camera so that you can drag or slow down the shutter creating a soft water affect. This filter is also used in other special effect situations for video. I have worked on film productions for some of the largest production companies in the world and this is my go to filter.

Q: 6. I have the LEE 100mm foundation kit with the 105mm CPL. Can I use this Hitech filter in front of my CPL - And then thread the CPL filter on to this graduated filter?

A: No, this filter rotates like the polarizer. It'll be too hard to see the effect of the ND moving around and the polarizer moving. I found it hard enough to see the effect of the 2 stop ND thru my lens in dawn light. I had to put a mark on the metal ring to see where the center of the top of the filter is so I could quickly set up the shot.

Q: 7. I want to thread a step down ring on the outside of the 82mm in order to mount a padcaster teleprompter, what is the outside size? 87mm?

A: According to Tiffen, the exterior diameter of the outer ring on the Tiffen 82mm Variable Neutral Density Filter is 3.851 inches, or 97.82 mm.

Q: 8. I have a Sony Zeiss Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35mm F4 ZA OSS lens. The filter diameter is 72mm. What size do I need to fit this ND FIlter? If I choose 72mm, won't vignetting occur at 16mm? I've heard this filter is thick.

A: You will need to get a thin 72mm filter, I would recommend the Cokin nd, click the link below to view; https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1487120-REG/cokin_cnv2_72_nuances_variable_nd_2_400.html

Q: 9. 72mm is my biggest lense thread so Ill buy 72mm , but I also have a 55mm lense and 67mm lense which i would use step up rings. How will this variable ND filter fare with the smaller lenses? Will i get bad vigneting or anything else?

A: I've used it on smaller lenses, it works great for me.

Q: 10. Will this work with a Lee filter holder?

A: If you purchase the LEE Filters Side Guide Screws 1/2" - Package of 4, B&H # LES.5, for use with the holder included in the LEE Filters Foundation Kit, then yes, it will allow you to use thicker 4mm glass filters such as the Formatt Hitech 4x4" HD ND 0.9 Glass Filter (3-Stop), B&H # FOND.9444, with the LEE Filters holder.
