Musicians, producers, and sound designers in search of a compact nearfield studio monitor will be impressed with the Focal Professional Shape 40, a powered studio monitor that's ideal for use in home, project, or mobile studios. The sealed MDF cabinet houses a 4.0" flax sandwich cone woofer and an aluminum/magnesium inverted dome tweeter that combine to provide a frequency response of 60 Hz to 35 kHz with a maximum SPL of 102 dB, while two 4.0" passive radiators help extend the low frequencies and minimize distortion. The midrange/low-frequency driver and the high-frequency driver each utilizes a Class-AB 25W amplifier for a total combined 50W. The sealed enclosure allows the monitor to be placed near a boundary or wall with no adverse effects.

The monitor features XLR and RCA input connectors, making it easy to connect to a variety of sound systems and devices. It also offers a variety of controls including an adjustable low-mid-frequency (160 Hz) control, as well as high- and low-frequency shelf controls, plus a releasable high-pass filter, which allow you to customize the speaker's acoustic response to match your environment. The Shape 40 can be mounted to the ceiling or a wall via the optional fastening accessories package and ships with a standard IEC power cord.

Q: 4. What is the best way to attach this to my MBP? I'm doing video editing and I don't have any Mixers / USB audio interface stuff. I just have the 1/8 inch headphone jack....

A: You can use a cable to connect from the headphone jack in your Mac Book Pro to the back of this monitor. However your audio will sound nicer if you intergrade a audio interface to the setup. Q: 5. Cables needed to connect to a Focusrite solo

A: That will depend on which generation of Scarlett Solo you have. Assuming you have a pair of the Rokit 5 G4's, if your Solo is 2nd Generation will need two rca to xlr male cables like these B&H # COCRMXM6. If your Solo is the newer 3rd generation, then you will need two trs to xlr male cables like these B&H # PEPMTRSXM06.

Q: 6. What is the A/D Converter for?

A: Because these monitors have DSP (Digital Signal Processors,) a high quality 24 bit/192 kHz A/D converter from Burr-Brown assures a pristine signal to the DSP section. The PWM-amplifiers are directly connected to the DSP section, so no additional conversion is necessary. This guarantees an extreme reliability.

Q: 7. Are the woofer surrounds foam or butyl rubber? Has anyone found a pro review of these FX50 speakers?

Q: 8. The pictures don't show an XLR or 1/4" input jack, but the specs say there is one...where is it?

A: The XLR-1/4" combo jack is not shown in the photos we have posted. It is located on the back of the speaker, on the lower right side. Q: 9. Are these monitors shielded?

A: No, the Genelec 8030C 5" 2-Way 100W Active Studio Monitors are not shielded. The Genelec models that have an "M" at the end of the manufacturer's item code (MFR#) are magnetically shielded.

Q: 10. Can these speakers be run directly off of a PC? If so, how do you connect them as the pictures show connections I have not used before.

A: The CMS 50 is a professional studio monitoring speaker and thus has connections typically found only in professional equipment. To integrate it with a computer, which would normally feature a 3.5mm stereo output, you would need a special cable (KOSMYCM2XM03) along with two extension cables (KOM4003, KOM4006) possibly 3-6 feet; your choice. But to maximize performance, I would advise you to invest in nice USB audio converter like the RME ADI-2 Pro, as it will heighten your listening experience by providing a pristine audio signal not available in standard run of the mill computer audio cards.

[Active 2-Way] I was upgrading my home project studio and needed new monitors. So I did my online research and found that KRK Rockit 5 Gen 3 are the best (in that price point). Well they are no longer in production and the music stores were selling the new Gen 4's. I was going to buy the Gen 4's but after listening to a comparison of the Gen 4's vs Gen 3's on YouTube, I realized the Gen 3's were still the best. Then I found B&H had the new Classic 5's (the other stores don't) that are practically replicas of the Gen 3's so I bought them. The sound is absolutely AMAZING!!! 5

[Limiter] I needed to replace an old KRK to match a G3 that I already have... and thankfully I was still able to buy this. It appears to be identical to a G3 with a different name. I'm glad I didn't have to go with the G4s, as the EQ screen on that model is worthless to me. Very happy with my purchase. 5

[Active 2-Way] These should be on your list for consideration. I've been using them for audio and video projects and very pleased with their sonic quality and accuracy. I've used KRKs in other editing rooms and always impressed with the sound. The price point along with B&H customer service are the main reasons why I made the purchase! 5

[Limiter] Bought these last week, & couldn't wait for them to arrive. After installing them, I was blown away by the fact that they were just as loud as my mackie mr8's in an a/b test. [Vertical] Finally had time to set up & break-in. Listened to an old David Bowie CD, heard things I never heard before. Nice hi-end. On the low end, the Passive Radiators are finally back in style. (Bass Ports always were a compromise) Bought on recommendation from others, They sound so good I could cry, knowing what I missed all these years. In my opinion, cant be beat for the price, by a long shot. The Auto-Off can come into play at low listening levels, not really any big deal, just turn it up for a few seconds & your back in business. [102 dB (Peak)] The sub can be tuned with a variable frequency knob for volume and cutoff. There is also a filter you can set at stepped 45, 60, 90 hz so that the speakers don’t have to work as heard and there is less clash with the bass. Once tuned, which takes a while, actually moving the sub mm and tilting it different ways changes the entire sound completely. So it’s a balance between taste and placement but in any position, it turns the audio into 3D. 5

[Woodgrain] I bought a pair of these to use with a guitar amp simulator. They sound great and allow for getting the amplifier and effects tone without having to crank up the volume to concert levels. 5
