Musicians, producers, and sound designers looking for a versatile studio monitor will be impressed with the Focal Professional Shape 50, a compact nearfield 5" active 2-Way studio monitor that's ideal for use in home, project, or mobile studios. The sealed MDF cabinet houses a 5.0" flax-sandwich cone woofer and an aluminum/magnesium inverted dome tweeter that combine to provide a frequency response of 50 Hz to 35 kHz with a maximum SPL of 106 dB, while two 5" passive radiators help extend the low frequencies and minimize distortion. The midrange / low-frequency driver is powered by a Class-AB 60W amplifier, while the high-frequency driver utilizes a Class-AB 25W amplifier. The sealed enclosure allows the monitor to be placed near a boundary or wall with no adverse effects.

The monitor features XLR and RCA input connectors, making it easy to connect to a variety of sound systems and devices. It also offers a variety of controls including a low-mid-frequency control (160 Hz), as well as high- and low-frequency shelf controls, plus a variable high-pass filter (full range / 45 / 60 / 90 Hz), which allows you to customize the speaker's acoustic response to match your environment. The Shape 50 can be mounted to the ceiling or a wall via the optional fastening accessories package and ships with a standard IEC power cord.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What is the A/D Converter for?

A: Because these monitors have DSP (Digital Signal Processors,) a high quality 24 bit/192 kHz A/D converter from Burr-Brown assures a pristine signal to the DSP section. The PWM-amplifiers are directly connected to the DSP section, so no additional conversion is necessary. This guarantees an extreme reliability.

Q: 2. Are these speakers magnetically shielded?

A: Yes they are internally magnetically shielded.

Q: 3. What cables do I need to connect to my MacBook Pro ?

A: You will need more than cables. The first thing you will need is a Peavey USB-P - USB "Direct Box". You can find it on the B&H website BH #PEUSBP. Then 2 XLR cables to connect the speakers to the Peavey.

Q: 4. Because this active monitor has DSP technology, will there be a delay from the signal going in to the sound coming out?

A: The SC204 is designed to process audio with undetectable latency.

Q: 5. Are these monitors shielded?

A: No, the Genelec 8030C 5" 2-Way 100W Active Studio Monitors are not shielded. The Genelec models that have an "M" at the end of the manufacturer's item code (MFR#) are magnetically shielded.

Q: 6. Can these speakers be run directly off of a PC? If so, how do you connect them as the pictures show connections I have not used before.

A: The CMS 50 is a professional studio monitoring speaker and thus has connections typically found only in professional equipment. To integrate it with a computer, which would normally feature a 3.5mm stereo output, you would need a special cable (KOSMYCM2XM03) along with two extension cables (KOM4003, KOM4006) possibly 3-6 feet; your choice. But to maximize performance, I would advise you to invest in nice USB audio converter like the RME ADI-2 Pro, as it will heighten your listening experience by providing a pristine audio signal not available in standard run of the mill computer audio cards.

Q: 7. is there a right and a left version ?

A: No there are not left and right versions. The word twin stands for the two 5 woofers on the speaker.

Q: 8. Where are the Focal Alpha 50 monitors made?

A: The Focal Alpha 50 Evo monitors are made in China.

Q: 9. Cables needed to connect to a Focusrite solo

A: That will depend on which generation of Scarlett Solo you have. Assuming you have a pair of the Rokit 5 G4's, if your Solo is 2nd Generation will need two rca to xlr male cables like these B&H # COCRMXM6. If your Solo is the newer 3rd generation, then you will need two trs to xlr male cables like these B&H # PEPMTRSXM06.

Q: 10. What cables would I need to connect these speakers to my iMac?

A: You can use BH #RORCC15352XM, https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1376960-REG/roland_rcc_15_352xm_black_series_balanced_interconnect.html Or BH #PRISPM2PM10, https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/134995-REG/Pro_Co_Sound_IPBQ2Q_10_Insert_Y_Cable_1_4_Male.html

[Active 2-Way] The sub can be tuned with a variable frequency knob for volume and cutoff.
There is also a filter you can set at stepped 45, 60, 90 hz so that the speakers don’t have to work as heard and there is less clash with the bass. Once tuned, which takes a while, actually moving the sub mm and tilting it different ways changes the entire sound completely. So it’s a balance between taste and placement but in any position, it turns the audio into 3D.

[MDF] Side by side comparison to ADAM speakers revealed these are the best speakers on the market. They have very clear and big bass. And they have very clear mids and highs. If clarity and low end boom and bass clarity is your thing, then these speakers are the best you will find in the music store. They are better than ADAM Audio speakers in a side by side comparison the rep took me thru, it was close with ADAM being second, but after listening to the EVE SC208s, the ADAMS started to sound just a little more muffled than when I first heard them before hearing the EVE SC208s, and EVE SC208 gave off a big clear, defined, tight bass that was better than ADAM's. Surprisingly the budget Mackie MR8 MK3 kinda came in close third place in all the test. Mackie has bass too and pretty clear mids in the MK3 series only, but EVE's are the best of all on the shelf music store monitors. They are the most expensive tho, so you know why, but you get what you pay for. If you want the monitor with the biggest baddest clearest bass and mids and highs that are not fatiguing at long periods of time, then you will have to pay the cost to be the boss with these.

[18 lb] Finally had time to set up & break-in. Listened to an old David Bowie CD, heard things I never heard before. Nice hi-end. On the low end, the Passive Radiators are finally back in style. (Bass Ports always were a compromise) Bought on recommendation from others, They sound so good I could cry, knowing what I missed all these years. In my opinion, cant be beat for the price, by a long shot. The Auto-Off can come into play at low listening levels, not really any big deal, just turn it up for a few seconds & your back in business. Thank You Focal!

[106 dB (Peak)] Very flat and useful to gauge every single part of a mix. Had a listen to them in a show room, and are comparable in quality to the Solo6. They are different than the solo6 in the low end, they have tighter bass but not as extended. However, the low end is much more accurate than on the solo6. The tweeter is great, not as amazing as the beryllium of the solo series, but for the price, you have to make a concession. They are the most workable small factor speakers I've listen to aside from the Solo6. Great bang for the buck!

[106 dB (Peak)] I own one SC-204 that I use as my keyboard monitor. Two SC-205's and TS-108 sub. I use the 205's and sub to gig small home venues. These speakers are great. Flat sound to me and they work. Great sound for mid to upper-mid priced speakers I would buy again and recommend to all.

[18 lb] These monitor speakers, although pricy, are very well suited to mixing and editing in protools for a studio either at home or in a formal studio setting. They are transparent with a very flat sound that does not emphasize any particular aspect of the frequency spectrum. Flat sound as used here is a good thing. The bass is surprisingly strong in my editing room which only about 8' x 10'. I did add a subwoofer for frequencies below 50Hz. The highs are exceptionally clear and the midrange very smooth. These speakers are very easy on the ears even after several hours editing. I highly recommend them. I use them mainly to edit recording of live theatrical musical performances.

[Woodgrain] These small monitors are tiny but produce very high levels with low distortion and great clarity. Very easy to carry in the bag specific to the model. These are really incredible for the size! I have Focal Twins in the main studio and these in an auxiliary room. The white model is also beautiful and takes very little space on a small desktop.

[18 lb] Very great sub, can be tuned exactly to how you want! Even in my medium sized room I have it on 12 oclock for the volume and cutoff around 80hz

[18 lb] Bought these last week, & couldn't wait for them to arrive. After installing them, I was blown away by the fact that they were just as loud as my mackie mr8's in an a/b test. Of course the mr8's more low end, but the clarity of the cms50's across the entire frequency spectrum was nothing short of amazing. Thanks Focal & BH!!!
