Ilford Rapid Fixer Liquid 1 Literis a non-hardening rapid fixer supplied as a liquid concentrate that should be diluted with water for use. It is easy and convenient to use in the range of 18°C (66°F) for fixing black and white film and paper in all manual and machine processing applications.

The fixing process assures that the latent image remains on the film or paper. This step is general preceded by a stop rinse and followed by a hypo wash to remove any trace of the fixer which might causing staining and degradation of the image.

At a 1+4 dilution, RC papers should be fixed for 1-2 minutes. Fiber based prints should be fixed for 1-2 minutes.

It should be noted that Ilford recommends that gloves, eye protection, apron or overall be worn when handling and mixing all chemicals.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Any idea of how many 35mm 36x rolls this would last? Thanks.

A: As per Ilford, 24 rolls of 35mm film in 36 exposures can be processed at a 1+4 dilution

Q: 2. CAN BE USED ON X RAY FILMS ?

A: Yes. We suggest a three minute fix in Ilford Rapid Fixer for 1+4 and a five-minute wash for x-ray film usage. But this is something an end-user needs to experiment with.

Q: 3. Does this have hardener in it?

A: No.

Q: 4. Can I reuse the fixer for processing film?

A: Yes you can reuse it but it is recommended to replenish it. The instructions on that is on page 3 at this link, https://bit.ly/3MdKFI1 .

Q: 5. Not so much a question as a bit of information, I saw in reviews that some one had said to mix this 1 part chem to 3 parts water this is not correct. It seems be misleading and 1:3 actually represents the fraction 1/3 a whole of 3 parts with 1 part chem and 2 parts water. Just wanted to clarify this to all.

A: Jeremy, the product comes in a 1 liter bottle and instructions say mix 1:3 to make 4 liters. From the original manufacturers website: The stock solution which has a shelf life of 1 year is diluted 1:3 to make the working solution. The working solution has a shelf life of 6 months.03-0141 Ships as 1 liter to make 4 liters

Q: 6. do I have to rinse with water after using the fixer for a spiral canister?

A: You can re use fixer so after you fix your film pour into a container for re use. After you have used the fixer on your film it is safe to be in the light. But yes you should be washing your film after that step as well as using some sort of wetting agent for cleaner negatives. Hope that helped

Q: 7. I need to make a liter of fixer what should my measurements be?

A: Anything between 1:4 and 1:9 will work just fine. The stronger, the longer it will last.

Q: 8. What wetting agent should I use with this fixer?

A: I use LFN. Never had any issues.

Q: 9. Is this toxic or dangerous? I want to teach children how to develop photographs using the coffee method and it recommended to use this as a fixer.

Q: 10. Hi, if I'm processing two rolls of 35mm films at a time, Is it better to prepare 500ml of this (125 ml fixer to 375 ml water) each time? Or to mix the whole bottle into a gallon at the beginning? In the latter case, would I pour the used content back into the gallon bottle after I'm done? Or do I discard it? Do I need to keep the gallon bottle full if I discard the used content? Thank you!

A: I only mix 1 liter at a time of TF4 as this will cover even dual processing of 120 rolls. I then pour it all back in the liter jar. I don't do quite enough film now to mix 1G at a time. TF4 is excellent on BW film. 6 min removes virtually all the magenta from Tri-X. I use it for all my BW stocks.

[Fixer] It removes excess silver from film, and does a great job of it. Not much else to say here. A bottle this size lasts me 6 months and is way cheaper than buying 1 liter bottles. Even if you use it to develop 1 roll of 35 mm film a week it's still worth it and it won't go bad before you use it all

[Fixer] I just started developing my own film and doing my own prints, learning from watching videos on youtube. Lots of fun, and easy to do! I used this rapid fixer for developing with ilford ilfotec dd-x, and for printing with ilford multigrade developer. I'm using Ilford Hp5 film, and its all been working out great!
