A versatile zoom for everyday shooting, the Canon EF-mount Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Art Lens Canon EFfrom Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Art Lens Canon EFcovers a useful wide-angle to portrait-length range of focal lengths to suit shooting in a variety of environments. As part of the esteemed Art series of lenses, a sophisticated optical design is used that incorporates three SLD elements and four aspherical elements to reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations, as well as color fringing, distortions, and other anomalies for greater clarity and sharpness. A Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been applied to suppress lens flare and ghosting for accurate color fidelity and high contrast, and a protective coating has been applied to the front element, too, to benefit working in harsh climates. Additionally, extending its versatility, a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent performance throughout the zoom range as well as greater control over depth of field.

Complementing the imaging capabilities, the lens sports a Hyper Sonic Motor to produce quick, smooth, and quiet autofocus performance with full-time manual focus override. An Optical Stabilizer also benefits handheld shooting by minimizing the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery. The physical design utilizes Thermally Stable Composite material for durability in a wide range of environments, and a brass bayonet mount also offers rigidity and mounting precision.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.

Standard zoom lens is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however it can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 38.4-112mm equivalent focal length range.

Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in available light conditions and also provides greater control over depth of field when using shallow depth of field techniques.

Three Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements markedly reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for improved clarity and color accuracy.

Four aspherical elements control spherical aberrations and distortion for increased sharpness and accurate rendering.

A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.

Integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocus, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.

Optical Stabilizer system minimizes the appearance of camera shake by up to four stops to benefit making sharper imagery when shooting handheld.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm is constructed from durable, fluorine-coated polycarbonate and also features a carbon feather film for smooth performance when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

Front lens element has been treated with a water- and oil-repellent coating to benefit working in harsh environmental conditions.

Constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations. Additionally, a brass bayonet affords improved mounting accuracy and rigidity. Additionally, rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.

This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Will this be released in the Sony EF mount in the future?

A: Lol.

Q: 2. Does its aperture change when zooming ?

A: Just to be more clear. A lens which says: 2.8 or 4. keeps the same aperture all the way from wide to tele. A lens that say: 3.5-5.6 with be 3.5 at wide and 5.6 at tele. To find exactly where, test by shooting 5-6 shots at different points on the zoom and look at the properties of the JPEG or where ever it will say the zoom and aperture.

Q: 3. What is its weight?

A: Always read the specs on the B&H site where the lens is sold... It is all there. Save your time asking others who might be wrong. And, go to the company site and see for yourself.

Q: 4. You say it's coming out in June but it's Aug. What's the hold up ?

A: I'm wondering the same thing. I ordered it immediately when the preorder email was sent out over a month ago. Seems like some people got the canon version and wrote reviews. Did you get any of the Nikon version in stock to send out? There are no customer reviews for the Nikon version so I assume not? When do you expect some to be sent out? I know it's first come/served but it would still be nice to have an idea.

Q: 5. Is this full frame ?

A: Yes, the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM is full-frame compatible.

Q: 6. Is their any locking mechanism for the zoom? If not, is the zoom mechanism firm enough to not slip when carrying the camera on a sling ?

A: No locking mechanism I could find. It's firm enough to keep it in the zoom distance you set. That said, with the lens bouncing on a sling something else on your body might make it spin and change the desired zoom level. It's smooth transitioning which makes it not bump safe from my experience.

Q: 7. How will this lens work with a crop sensor Nikon D7200?

A: Any Nikon F mount lens on a D7200 crops 1.5 times. So, a 24-70 lens like the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Art Lens for Nikon F on a D7200 is like a 36-105mm lens.

Q: 8. How does this compare to the Canon 24-70 2.8 II?

A: I've owned this lens for 2 months. Its amazing. Built like tank, and operates with buttery smooth precision. Weather and dust resistant too. I borrowed a canon 24-70 II for a shoot before purchase. Also a great lens, .5 lbs lighter, but no IS. I haven't noticed a difference IQ wise. The background blur is beautiful. Focus is fast and extremely quiet. I chose this lens because it has IS and I wanted to have the flexibility to take off tripod video of moving objects. It has not disappointed me, and was $500 less than the Canon equivalent. I picked up a refurbished 85 prime, extra battery and SD card with the money I saved. I have no regret purchasing this lens. Its a spectacular performer.

Q: 9. this lens has any type of tripod mount? i plan to use it on a monopod for video shooting on a sony body via de mc11 adapter. Do you guys think the lens mount on the camera will suffer the heavy weight of this lens?

A: No mount on the lens it's self for a tripod. Maybe a third party lens collar might be a solution.

Q: 10. Is this Sigma 24-70 f2.8 lens compatible with the Canon C100ii body? How is the image stabilization feature? Works well?

A: The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Art Lens for Canon EF is compatible with the Canon EOS C100 Mark II Cinema EOS Camera. The Image Stabilization on this lens is very good.

[f/2.8] This lens did everything I needed it to! Ended up shooting two different dance festivals right after picking up this lens. The difference the 2.8 makes vs the 24-105 f4 I was using is so helpful in low light situations. AF is super sharp, fast, and silent. Very pleased… first non-Canon lens I’ve bought.

[Full-Frame] Sigma has made a huge step with the Sigma Art lens. Really a good job.

[Canon EF] If you’re looking for a zoom lens in this focal length and speed, and you want to save a few bucks, this is the lens for you. Feels good on the camera and the results so far are first rate. It’s not a featherweight but neither is the Nikon (which werighs more). I’ll let you know about durability in a few years,

[f/22] My review comes with 30 years as a pro. I am rating this lens a 5 out of 5. It captures all the images I have taken as I expected. In focus, with the correct bokeh for the f setting. Yes, it is a beast (heavy). If you are looking for a carry around lens, this is not for you. Considering the quality of the end product, I would highly suggest this lens.

[Full-Frame] After reading mixed reviews about this lens I had reservations about purchasing it. I eventually was swayed more by the positive reviews and purchased it from B&H for a Nikon D850 also purchased from B&H. This lens is built like a tank! Beautiful metal finish on the tube, it just feels like a heavy duty, high quality product. After taking it afield a few days, I’m very pleased. It’s sharp, focuses quickly and has a beautiful bokeh. This is the first non Nikon lens I have purchased in 40 years and I have no regrets. It was $1100 less than the Nikon version and produced great images.

[f/2.8] I'm one of the few people out there who doesn't really like Canon L glass. I've had more problems with it than good experiences. So I used a Tamron 24-70 2.8 for my midrange 2.8 zoom, mostly because I wanted stabilization. But when I saw this came out, I instantly bought because I think Sigma Art glass is stunning (super happy with my other ones include 18-35 1.8, 50-100 1.8, some wide angle primes, etc). I'm super happy with it. I rented a Canon 24-70 2.8 L once and this thing blows it away in features, price, image quality, etc. This is definitely the best EF midrange 2.8 zoom on the market, can't go wrong with this one.

[f/22] This fits well into my minimalist lens inventory. Will likely be getting rid of most of my prime lens.

[2.93 lb] This lens is sharp, has minimal distortion and great color. There's not much more to ask for from a standard focal length f2.8 zoom. A great lens, a definite alternative to manufacturer zooms that gives one feature that DSLR f2.8 zooms generally lack, stabilization.
