Record to your mobile device with the 1.5' Sescom Dual 1/4" Phone Plug to 3.5mm TRRS Plug Line to Microphone Summing Cable. This cable enables you to take a live feed from a mixing board or any other 1/4"-equipped line level source and record directly to your smartphone or tablet via the 3.5mm headphone jack.

While smartphones typically record the mic input in mono, the 1/8-watt summing resistors blend the left and right stereo channels together, giving you a stereo-to-mono mix that plays back equally in the left and right side of your headphones. An attenuation pad reduces the signal strength to the mic level, and an electrolytic capacitor blocks DC power.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Could this be used to record directly from a mixer's XLR out to an iPhone or iPad?

A: Yes. That is the purpose of this cable.

Q: 2. I just purchased a Sescom Stereo RCA to TRRS 3.5mm Plug Line to Mic Level iPhone/iPod/iPad Summing Cables - 12 Inch (SES-IPSUMRCA12IN) Will it work being connected to a Macbook Pro (2015) headphone jack? And for recording in a DAW?

A: Hi Lest. There is a chance it will work, but it most likely will not, unless the jack "sees" the signal in the same way it does an Apple earbuds set or a headset with mic. Our IPSUM and IPHONE cables were not designed for Macbooks, but we are reviewing and will be testing and updating the line accordingly once tests are complete and we can fully advise whether cables work with Macbooks or not. Thank you!

Q: 3. is compatible with samsung galaxy s5?

A: Yes, it is!

Q: 4. Does this cable work from a camera to a microphone or sennheiser wireless audio receiver?

A: The Pearstone Mini TRRS to TRRS Cable (Right Angle, 1.5') uses Tip-Ring-Ring-Sleeve wiring. Most mirrorless, DSLR, and camcorders that have a 3.5mm mic input use Tip-Ring-Sleeve wiring (TRS). For Sennheiser wireless receivers, this is the output cable to use, which has a locking connector on the receiver end: https://bhpho.to/406BEKx.

Q: 5. Will this work with other phones - a Samsung Galaxy for example? Also, I just need a simple mic to go with it. Any recommendations?

A: This has been designed for compatibility with your iPhone, iPod or Blackberry. It may not work with android devices consistently.

Q: 6. My mic is a Stereo XLR condenser mic that requires phantom power to work, so this is the adapter that will allow it to record with my macbook?

A: This cable blocks phantom power so it will not work for your application. Your best solution would be an audio interface.

Q: 7. I want to record audio and video into my iPhone 5. can this product connect from the XLR output of a wireless lav into the iphone?

A: Yes, you may plug your LAV into the XLR port and the 1/8th inch into your iPhone and your headphones into the 1/8 inch port.

Q: 8. Will this cable work as a standard TRRS to TRS adapter cable?

A: Not that we are aware of. This is specifically for the Canon 5D MK II when using Magic Lantern.

Q: 9. Could this split the stereo from Saramonic uwmic into two separate mono channels, then into my Zoom H6?

A: This Sescom Y cable #SES-IPSUMTS12IN will not work for the desired application because the wiring on the 1/8 TRRS is designed for a smartphone mic input and the 1/4 TS leads would force you to plug into the Zoom's line inputs bypassing the mic preamps. Theoretically, you could achieve separation of the two channels via the one stereo output if, and only if the Saramonic provides a true stereo output with each transmitter assigned to either the tip and the ring respectively. A special cable would have to be made featuring a locking TRS 1/8 male connector on one end, and two XLR male leads on the other.

Q: 10. Could this be used to monitor sound recordings if it was used with a DSLR camera 3.5 mm Mic input?

A: This cable is designed for use with smartphones that feature both headphone and mic on a single jack. Since a DSLR mic input only offers input and no headphone capability, this cable will not work.

[0.1 lb] I'm using this to connect Rode NtG2 to an ipad for my kids' filmmaking classes. It's a great compromise for this purpose since 10-year-old attention spans do not allow for synching up sound from another source! This gets the mic closer (using with the Rode micro boom pole) and the sound is crisp and clear.

[0.1 lb] We do interviews out doors in a park, on an iPhone. While the picture looks great, the audio from the phone is a bit distant and prone to wind, dogs barking and other unwanted distractions. This cable uses the TRRS connection which is the only way to bring an external signal into the phone. Coupled with a basic, dynamic microphone, with a simple foam wind screen, we are able to get very clean, clear audio with in our interviews.

[5.2 x 4 x 0.8"] I do audio for network news and when I have a phoner interview, I take a feed off of my mixer to the XLR-F mic input of the TRRS cable and a 1/8" mini jumper from the headphone out to a powered speaker. The remote correspondent hears the person fine and speaker can make them heard on our end plus they have a little scratch track of what's being asked through bleed from the speaker to the microphone. I use an iPhone 6s and the XLR F input prefers mic level but seems to handle line level comfortably. In typical fashion - I own one to use and a backup.

[0.1 lb] I was looking for a way to bring external audio into my iPad without resorting to an external audio interface. I found that some simple apps, for example the iPad's built-in video camera, don't always recognize pro audio interfaces even if designed for iOS devices. Since this cable just utilizes the ubiquitous mic input on the iPad, it works perfectly. You can run your mixing board output(s) straight into this. It has the internal circuitry needed to do the line-to-mic conversion and (if needed) summing, and other protections. Of course you get mono into your device whether one or both XLRs are connected. It was well worth it to me to not have to figure out the proper circuit and then kludge solder something up on my own. For being molded it is well constructed. I suggest being careful with the 3.5mm end and not stress it or your iPad/Phone jack by dangling this adapter with heavy XLR connectors from your iPad/Phone. Use a lighter-weight 3.5mm extension cable at the iPad first or otherwise strain relief the 3.5mm at the iPad/Phone some way.

[0.1 lb] JSYK: anyone can make one of these cables themselves: it's just a regular 1/8 male to male stereo cable with a resister soldered in-line. But I hate getting messy, so if you're like me then you will appreciate the convenience of this cable. It is well constructed and labelled appropriately to let you know which end to stick where. The cable could be a tad longer, but it's meant to be short as it connects a mounted recording device to your dSLR, a situation where you really don't want long cables. Anyway, if you don't feel like making one yourself, then this is a fine purchase.
