[MP3] This is very well made device. Good build quality. Feels solid. A lot of features and settings. Being able to make as many custom named folders as I like is very handy. Good for playing music on because it keeps the music separate from the recordings you make. I love how it differentiates between line in and mic in when you plug something in. My only beef with it is that it does not have a dedicated erase button like most of the competition does. To delete a file while you are listening to it you need to press options, then up arrow, then enter, then down arrow, then enter again. If you are not playing back the file at the time it's even worse because the options menu has more items that you have to skip over. The missing WMA and OGG support is a minor issue but I understand that at least for WMA there are licensing costs that would raise the price.

[MP3] I use this recorder for gathering info for captions for the newspaper I shoot for. I just leave it on (not recording) in my front pocket while shooting and when I need to grab someone's name and info I just pull it out and hit record. I leave it on because there's about a 3 second delay from switching it on to when it's ready to record. I found that that 3 seconds or so can be an awkward moment when someone is just standing there waiting to give their info, so doing this speeds it up. You can slide it into the hold position so it's ready to go and then the button's won't get mashed while in your pocket.

The main thing I needed in a recorder was a time-stamp, and this one works great for that. As long as it's synced with your camera then the recording will be stamped about a minute after the last photo of that subject, or however quickly you're able to get info after the last shot, so it's pretty easy to match the recording to the series of images. It's especially handy when shooting large events where I may gather 20 people's names and info. This is much more efficient than using pen and pad where you can risk not understanding your own writing later on, and there's no good way to sync a written name to a digital file. You also don't have to try and write as fast as they're speaking, especially when it's a lot of info. You can listen to their name and spelling over and over again if needed too.

The audio through headphones is really clean and high quality, the built-in speaker is okay. It has survived a drop to the concrete on the corner of the screen and it's fine, just a dent. My only complaint is the delay in start-up, but as I mentioned, there's an easy solution to that.
