The Tiffen 6x6" Soft/FX 1/2 Filter for Photographycan be applied to purposely reduce the appearance of blemishes and wrinkles in portraits or to apply a general soft-focus effect while maintaining overall sharpness. An array of small lenses distributed within the surface of this filter smooths fine lines and textures, which can be useful for creating a more flattering result of a subject.

This filter has a grade of 1/2. Grades of 1/8, 1/4, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 are also available where this filter type's effect becomes approximately twice as strong with each grade number increase. When higher grade numbers are applied, a halation effect around highlights can be created to further enhance a subject's appearance or produce a desired effect.

This filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity as well as color fidelity and is compatible with filter holders that can accommodate 4mm-thick, 6 x 6" rectangular filters. It is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between two pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch.

Q: 1. How many stops of lights get lost?

A: The following unit offers a 2.5 light loss.

Q: 2. For taking direct pictures of the sun does the sun come out black and white (b+w) only?

A: No. It is color. It will shade the lens for longer exposure. Love mine!

Q: 3. Does this filter block IR spectrum?

A: It "attenuates" or reduces IR interference during long exposures to prevent color casts. It does not fully block IR.

Q: 4. Does this fabric have grommets for tieing to frames?

A: The fabric does have grommets for securing the fabric to a frame.

Q: 5. Can this type of ND filter be used as stack up filter, 2-stop + 4-stop = 6-stop?

A: Yes you can , its always best not to stack filters

Q: 6. Where is this filter made?

A: According to our records, the Formatt Hitech 77mm Firecrest ND 1.8 Filter (6-Stop) is made in the UK. Please note that this is subject to change at any time.

Q: 7. Will this filter be SLIM ENOUGH to slot into a Canon 300/2.8 and 400/2.8 lens? I have the drop-in filter holder that accommodates 52mm screw-in filters, but they need to be SLIM enough to fit into the drop-in slot on top of the 300 and 400 mm lenses. Will it work?

A: There is no published list of compatible filters for that filter holder--the only filters guaranteed to fit are those provided by Canon. Because the Formatt Hitech 52mm Firecrest ND 1.5 Filter (5-Stop) has a "super-slim" design, it may work.

Q: 8. Is this filter stackable with another circular filter?

A: It is with a filter of the same size or with a step up or down ring to the same size in this case 77mm.

Q: 9. Is this a solid piece of fabric or are there seams running across the face of the diffuser?

A: There no seam, it's one piece of cloth.

Q: 10. Does this rag come with a storage bag? Does it come with the ties as well?

A: No. units are shipped in clear packaging. storage bag must be provided by end-user.

[0.75 lb] I loves this filter F/X 2. It gives a soft focus to my portraits without actually blurring the image. Very good for close up portraits.

[0.75 lb] I use this filter when filming interviews under controlled lighting - i.e. indoor. Digital video can be somewhat crisp on wrinkles and skin blemishes, but this filter softens them nicely without being too sickly fuzzy. Very happy with the results. It's not so good in strong uncontrolled lighting.

[0.75 lb] I often shoot women who just want that softer look and no matter how I tweak the lighting, they aren't happy. This filter is the magic weapon that works every time.

[0.75 lb] I bought this filter to use with my Sigma 105 mm macro lens for flower photography. The filter produces exactly the dreamy, ethereal look that I often aim for in my flower photography, with a beautiful soft glow when a flower is backlit. The filter is solidly built and screws onto the lens smoothly. I'm totally pleased with this product.

[0.75 lb] As standard practice in the portrait studio I like using the Soft/FX1 because it provides just enough help to take the hard edge off a portrait. Now that I have the FX2, I find it's my choice for some faces. Its effect is still fairly subtle, but can sometimes be too soft for a younger customer's portrait when it is to be used in professional publication. I can't say I notice any flare or fog effect. Technically the FX series filters aren't a translucent milky material. It would be more accurate to describe them as clear glass with hundreds or thousands of very, very small bubbles trapped inside that act as lenses.

[0.75 lb] Having worked with filters extensively when shooting with my film cameras over the years, I knew that if the softening feature on my new camcorder proved unable to do what I needed that a filter or combination of filters might just save the day. Although the Tiffen soft fx filter #3 is not sold for use with video, the results were exactly as expected. Once again, Tiffen came through 110%

[0.75 lb] Just enough softening to relax the hardness' in a portrait. Does not create any fog or flare. Love using this filter in the studio for both women's and men's formal portraits.

[0.75 lb] Bought this for studio work with my Leica lenses, which are often too sharp for some types of portraiture--every skin pore is right there. Tried the FX 3 first, but it gives noticeable halos on specular highlights like jewelry. These are minor with the FX 1, but the desired smoothing effect of skin is still noticeable. Depending on the subject, post-processing will often still be necessary (don't expect any filter to eliminate photoshop...) but the filter helps bring the unedited image closer to target.
