Spanning a useful range of telephoto focal lengths, this lens is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 112-320mm equivalent focal length range.

Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture benefits working in low-light conditions and affords consistent performance throughout the entire zoom range.

One XLD (extra-low dispersion) and five LD (low dispersion) elements are featured in the optical design to noticeably limit color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity, color fidelity, and apparent sharpness.

Both eBAND and BBAR coatings have been applied to suppress ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast when working in backlit conditions.

VC image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 5 stops for more effective handheld shooting in difficult lighting conditions. Three separate VC modes are also available to suit various styles of shooting: Mode 1 is a balanced setting for general use, and promotes both a stabilized viewfinder image and stabilized results; Mode 2 is designed exclusively for panning movements; and Mode 3 is optimized to stabilize only during capture without stabilizing the viewfinder image.

A ring-type USD autofocus motor delivers quick and precise focusing performance to suit working with moving subjects. This motor also affords full-time manual focus control, and it is possible to focus on subjects as close as 3.1' away.

A sealed, dust- and moisture-resistant construction benefits this lens' use in inclement conditions, and a fluorine coating has also been applied to the front lens element to protect against dust, dirt, and smearing.

A removable rotating tripod collar features an Arca-type compatible foot and benefits working with the lens atop a tripod or monopod.

Durable metal barrel uses a curved, ergonomic shape for easy handling, and both the zoom and focus rings are textured for improved grip.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

An electromagnetic diaphragm is used for more precise and consistent exposure control, especially when shooting at high continuous shooting rates.

Compatible with optional TAP-in Console for fine-tuning select focusing adjustments and for updating lens firmware.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can it be use in My APSC format Nikon D7500? I notice the D7500 is not listed on the last bullet point relating to the electromagnetic diaphragm.

A: According to Tamron's website (https://www.tamron.jp/en/product/lenses/electromagnetic_diaphragm.html) the answer is yes.

Q: 2. Is the focus throw long or short? I have the older version and it has a very short focal throw. Is this version the same? Thank you

A: This lens has a short focus throw.

Q: 3. Will this lens work on a D7000? I didn't see it in the capatibility list.

A: Yes, it works fine. The list of compatible models has been updated to include the D7000

Q: 4. What is the diameter of the focus ring? I would like to put a gear ring to use a follow focus, but I need to know the diameter to buy an exact ring.

A: The focus ring is 85mm.

Q: 5. auto focus while spanning, does this lens get lost when when following fast action. low light inside performance? what do the users think?

A: There are 244 4 1/2* B&H customer reviews for this lens. The majority are extremely happy with the performance, sharpness, focusing, price, everything. I would say you are in good shape. Note: I do strongly recommend with every new lens that it be immediately tested on a surface like a brick wall, at different distances, different f/stops and different zoom settings. Then look at the images at 100% on a big computer screen looking at the center and all four corners. If sharp, great. If not, then exchange before the 30 days of your B&H return it up.

Q: 6. Will this work on a Nikon D5000 with a teleconverter?

A: This lens would work on the Tamron 70-200mm lens however the teleconverter you need cannot be the Nikon branded one. You'll need the Tamron Teleconverter to work with this lens. https://bhpho.to/3rwIE09

Q: 7. Does this have focusing hard stops or is it focus by wire? Same as the 24-70 f2.8?

A: This lens is not focus by wire. It is a direct mechanical type, where you can turn the focus ring when the camera is off (or even with the lens not connected to the body) and see the lens elements moving accordingly. The focus distance indicator does stop at each end, although the focus ring will keep turning. Also, the focus distance indicator will not stop precisely at the infinity mark, but go past it. My understanding, this is common in modern lenses. One explanation, is to account for thermal expansion, which may change the infinity distance.

Q: 8. What is/are the primary application(s) this lens is suited for?

A: The 70-200 is a very versatile mid-telephoto lens. Typically you'll see the 70-200mm used in short range indoor/outdoor sports, in-studio and on-location portraiture, or general use street and landscape photography.

Q: 9. Is this compatible with the Nikon D850?

A: Yes, this lens is compatible with the Nikon D850.

Q: 10. Can I use it with sony A6300?

A: The Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 Lens, for Canon EF B&H # TA7020028SPC, is deisgned for use with Canon cameras that use the Canon EF lens mount. The Sony Alpha a6300 Mirrorless Digital Camera uses the Sony E-mount lens mount. As such, you would need a lens adapter such as either the Metabones Canon EF/EF-S Lens to Sony E Mount T Smart Adapter (Fifth Generation), B&H # MEMBEFEBT5, or the Vello Canon EF/EF-S Lens to Sony E-Mount Camera Auto Lens Adapter, B&H # VELAESECEF, for your usage needs.

[f/22] I was skeptical, as I've always preferred Nikkor lenses on my cameras. I'm no longer a brand loyalist! This lens is sharp, fast, and well made. I shot a pool tournament in low light and didn't once reach for another lens. Whether I was sniping shots from 3 tables away or closeup at the active table, I got every shot I wanted. My one and only complaint is minor, but I felt the barrel wasn't that smooth compared to a Nikon lens. For nearly 1/3 the cost, I'd recommend this lens all day.

[Autofocus] As a fellow Tamron enthusiast (with the 90mm macro and 24-70 f/2.8 in my collection) this one is the best of all!

Image Quality: crisp photos and sharp focus.
Handling: natural to work with is a common sentiment.
Versatility: The 70-200mm focal length range makes it suitable for various photography genres, including portraits, sports, and wildlife.
Fast Aperture: The constant f/2.8 aperture throughout the zoom range is a significant advantage, allowing for beautiful bokeh and low-light shooting capabilities.

Overall, positive experience. looking forward for capturing stunning photos at the outdoor event next weekend!

[4.975 lb] I forgot to mention how handy the lens tripod collar is. Since the lens is a bit heavy the tripod collar acts as a gripping point to stabilize the lens. Really nice feature, I'm really glad Tamron added this to the lens. It is sold separately but it's over $100 so it's nice they added this to the package

[4.975 lb] The autofocus is super fast, all done once I half press the shutter. Helps a lot when I have to shoot indoor hockey games.

[f/22] I've needed the focal length of 70-200 for a while, and have typically been brand loyal. The sticker price of the Canon was way beyond my expenses, so I went with the Tamron. This lens is fantastic.

So far I have used it on a handful of projects and it preforms beautifully. It's very fast, the images are extremely crisp and it performs exceptionally in low light environments.

Moving forward, I'll start looking at Tamron for any lens to add to my arsenal. Their equipment is terrific and performs just as well as any Canon, Nikon or Sony lens.
