It is a direct mechanical type, where you can turn the focus ring when the camera is off (or even with the lens not connected to the body) and see the lens elements moving accordingly. The focus distance indicator does stop at each end, although the focus ring will keep turning. Also, the focus distance indicator will not stop precisely at the infinity mark, but go past it.
