The Shure KSM141/SL Condenser Microphonefrom Shure KSM141/SL Condenser Microphoneis a switchable-polar-pattern condenser studio microphone designed for instrument recording and sound reinforcement. The capsule's pattern is switchable between omnidirectional and cardioid pick up. Omnidirectional offers a more generous pickup area while cardioid offers attenuation of noise and ambiance at the off-axis sections of the microphone. In addition, the microphone offers a wide 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response making it a flexible solution for a variety of applications. The KSM141/SL's element features a permanently biased transducer design resulting in clean, accurate signal reproduction and frequency response. The transformerless Class-A output circuitry provides a noise-free-output signal path while maintaining high gain levels.

There is a 3-position low-frequency roll-off switch, eliminating low-frequency rumble noise and counteracting proximity effect. The KSM141/SL handles high sound-pressure levels and features a 3-position pad switch providing attenuation at 0, 15, 25 dB. This allows for confident miking of instruments high in transient response such as drums, percussion, and brass. The microphone is also suitable for recording piano, strings, guitar, and woodwinds. The KSM141/SL ships with a case, a microphone clip, and a foam windscreen.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can I use this to teach yoga while on the zoom app?

A: The SM31 is a good option for fitness applications like teaching yoga. Since this is just a microphone and not a complete wireless system, you may want to consider purchasing a complete system with the same mic included such as Shure BLX14/SM31 Wireless Cardioid Fitness Headset Microphone System (B&H # SHB14SM31H10).

Q: 2. Can I use this mic for rap vocals or any type of music vocals??

A: This mic is great for rap vocals. It has great clarity and sound.

Q: 3. Everybody tells me that this mic is great for loud environments. I could use that. But what's the max SPL?

A: 148db with pad

Q: 4. Does this microphone sound any better with the GLDX 14 than the BLX 14? We commonly have music playing and want to make sure our instructor's voice is clear and retains a dynamic profile.

A: The Shure SM31FH Fitness Headset Condenser Microphone will sound the same with both wireless systems. The PA that you are connecting the wireless mic system and music to will most likely have more of an affect on the clarity of the sound.

Q: 5. Hi, I was just wondering. Is it possible to connect Shure VP88 to Sony PCM-D100? And how? And is there any disadvantage in doing that? (recording quality, etc.) All the best, Emil

A: The Shure VP88 can be used with a portable recorder such as the D-100 when set to stereo mode and using the internal battery power. To connect to the 3.5mm input on the recorder would require the included Y cable and additional adapter cable. There would be no disadvantage, however the PCM-D100 is designed primarily for use with the internal mics, and a mic such as the Shure would benefit from a unit with XLR inputs and higher quality preamps.

Q: 6. I have a SHURE BLX4 J10 and BLX1 J10. Is it possible that the Shure SM31FH is compatible with these?

A: Yes. These cmponents are compatible.

Q: 7. Hi - would there be any advantages in sound quality of buying this over the sound I already get from the Sony PCM-D100 built in mics? I realise they're XY and this is an MS mic but I'm hoping to record two things acoustic singer songwriter bits and also some ambience from a forrest and wondered if the sound from using this VP88 into a mixer (mixpre-d) line out into the line in of the PCM-D100 would yield better results than just using the built in mics on the pcm-d100.

A: Although the built-in mics of the Sony PCM-D100 are very good, this Shure VP-88 offers a very large improvement. Along with better sound, this external mic offers the flexibility of distance and placement away from the recorder.

Q: 8. How does the KSM141/SL ST pair differ from the previous KSM141/ST pair?

A: There does not appear to be any difference at all between the current and older versions of the Shure KSM141/SL ST PAIR Condenser Microphone (Stereo Pair).

Q: 9. I'm looking for a wireless/blue tooth headset microphone and personal amplifier/speaker. Any suggestions?

A: This is not a bluetooth headset. this is a wired headset to use with a bodypack transmitter.

Q: 10. Does this heaset have the cable attached to connect to the transmitter bodypack? Or is the cable purcahsed separately

A: The Shure SM31FH Fitness Headset Condenser Microphone has an attached 45" cable with a TA4F connector, so it is ready to use with a Shure bodypack transmitter or another wireless transmitter that uses a TA4F input connector.

[Phantom Power] I've used this microphone for close to 20 years now, and decided to write a review, because I feel it needs more love and attention on this site. I actually bought mine in Europe all that time ago, and paid almost twice of what it costs today at B&H. Still I have no regrets. Over the years, I have used it mostly for vocals and acoustic guitar. I am a singer-songwriter with a project studio, so the astronomical prices of big boy mics are out of my reach, but I have accumulated some really nice equipment over the years. Not sure that a 5000$ condenser would be a quantum leap, but it's possible. That said, in the 500-1200$ range, I have used nothing that rivals this one. It has great, crisp clarity on vocals and a solid, firm bottom end. I have noticed that the intelligibility of lyrics is very good with this mic. It never seems to be harsh or shrill sounding, yet there is always a reservoir of extra high end available through EQ. I'm usually using the low-cut filter to manage any rumble and floor resonance. In conjunction with a nice pencil mic (I'm using the affordable Octava 012), it's great for guitar. It's solidly built and comes with a sturdy shock mount, as well as the simpler mic clip for quick setup or tight corners. Today, I'd get the black one; other than that, I wouldn't change a thing.

[Phantom Power] I run a municipal TV station and do most of the V/O work. Bang for the buck this is a great mic. i use it in conjunction with the Shure XLR to USB adapter straight into Adobe Audition.

[-15 / -25 dB] I record a lot of live mostly classical music concerts and recitals. I've got a panoply of microphones and wouldn't you know it my mainstay Schoeps had to go off for repairs to Germany (a 2 month turnaround at best). I also own an old pair of KSM 137, (which are TERRIFIC mics) but I dropped one, so it is also out for repair (Shure's turnaround maybe a week!). With one final concert before the end of the season I had no reliable SDC pair so decided to purchase these 141s and try them out in Cardioid ORTF in front of two vocalists. In comparison to the Schoeps or 137 or Neumann and by only one use there is a winner here that can tag along for spots, ambience or even mains. With the added choice for Omnis, which I have not tried yet, I am pretty confident the detail and trueness to sound and response should work out very well. I was told a while back by an old pro that the 137s and 141s are good substitutes for the Schoeps, the 141's similar to the MK5 capsules. Well worth it. My advice, don't drop your mics or pull out a live 48p cable! Power down and keep a steady hand.

[2.025 lb] This mic differs from most unidirectional mics in having an extended low frequency response. This makes it ideal for piano, orchestral and pipe organ recording. I used a pair of these mics in a DIN stereo recording pattern (mics placed about 8 inches apart and angled 90 degrees) to record the tracker action pipe organ in our church with outstanding results.

[Solid-State] I'm a full time audiobook narrator. I have tried several mics, including a Neumann TLM 103, a TLM 102, a Sennheiser MK4, a Sennheiser 416 and a Shure SM7B. For my voice, the KSM32 beats them all. It's very warm sounding and very versatile. It's an excellent buy.

[Silver] natural uncolored sound

[Phantom Power] The off axis colouration is the best thing about this mic. Miking with other similar sound sources nearby isn't as much of a pain as it would be with lesser mics.

Honest mid range, pretty smooth highs, lows aren't too boomy. You get what you want with a pair of these guys and they aren't noisy.

[Mono] Great microphone in good price. I usually use it for the trumpet, and it has a warm sound which is unusual for the condenser microphones in this price range. It also allow me to record little details such as articulations and dainamics.

[Solid-State] Our music department purchased the KSM137 pair for recording ensemble concerts. The mic setup used for all of the ensembles is a near-coincident, almost ORTF spacing. The results are excellent! Factoring in the cost makes this a perfect choice for school music departments on a budget.

[Phantom Power] Great sounding mic for the price. Sounds very good on acoustic instruments including guitars, percussion etc.
