Building on the success of the well-regarded CP.2 lenses, ZEISS CP.3 28mm T2.1 Lens PL Mount Compact Primeoffer the same full-frame sensor coverage and classic ZEISS look in an updated form factor and with improved mechanics and lens coatings. This 28mm Compact Prime lens is derived from the same classic optical formula as the preceding CP.2 variant and shares the same physical length as the 15, 18, 21, 25, 35, 50, and 85mm CP.3 lenses while maintaining identical focus and iris gear positioning with the entire set of CP.3 lenses, relative to the mount. All CP.3 lenses also share the same 95mm front diameter. Similar physical attributes across the lens line makes fitting lens accessories such as matte boxes, follow focuses, lens supports, and lens control motors easier and less time consuming.

Another feature handed down from the preceding CP.2 lenses is the interchangeable mounts. This lens comes with an PL mount installed. Though, if you wish to fit your CP.3 lens to a different camera, the lens mount can be swapped by the user for a separately available mount of a different kind. If you like the bokeh in your images to be round, even after stopping down, you will be pleased to know that the 14-bladed iris, made famous by the CP.2 lenses, has been retained.

ZEISS CP.3 28mm T2.1 Lens PL Mount Compact PrimeWhile the CP.3 lenses are designed for a degree of user-serviceability regarding the mount, for ideal performance and calibration, B&H recommends that mount swaps and other lens adjustments be done by a trained lens technician at a service center.

Zeiss lenses are known for their clean and crisp image rendering. The CP.3 series of lenses is no different. This CP.3 lens will accurately color-match to other Zeiss cinema lenses inside and out of the CP.3 range. The CP.3 lenses feature improved lens coatings and anti-reflection masking over the CP.2 range for increased contrast and reduced flare, important for capturing content with the intent of an HDR-format release.

For enhanced ergonomics over the previous-generation CP.2 lenses, the CP.3 lens barrel has been reshaped to be more similar to the renowned Zeiss Ultra Prime lenses. This new shape is easier to handle, and takes up less physical space than the original Compact Prime design. An even weight distribution ensures that these lenses will be at home handheld, locked down on a tripod, or flown on a Steadicam or motorized gimbal.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. If I use this lens on a c300 Mark II there will be some crop correct? This lens is made for full frame camera?

A: The ZEISS CP.3 lenses - like the previous version CP.2 - are designed for full-frame cameras using 24x36mm sensor sizes. Since the camera in question uses an APS-C sensor of 13.8x24.6mm, it has an effective crop factor of 1.46x when using FF lenses.

Q: 2. Does this require a locking mechanism in the mount? I’d like to use it on the FX6

A: The ZEISS CP3 lenses incorporate a 3/8" thread support bracket at the bottom of the barrel. This can be tied into a camera support rig to isolate the lens from the camera and prevent any movement in the mount as the focus is racked.

Q: 3. does this also work on super 35 ?

A: Yes it does.

Q: 4. How does this perform in terms of CA levels and purple fringing at all aperture settings?

A: It is our understanding that the optical properties of the CP.2 and CP.3 lenses are very similar. There were reports of some CA with the CP.2 lenses. Being that these are Zeiss, we doubt that this really is something that the cinematographer will be concerned about let alone his audience. CA is dependent on lighting, focus and aperture as well. We would encourage you to rent and test before you buy to make sure these lenses are for you.

Q: 5. Will this work with the FX3?

A: Yes, the ZEISS CP.3 35mm T2.1 Compact Prime Lens (Sony E Mount, Feet) is compatible with the Sony FX3.

Q: 6. With the Zeiss CP.2 Super Speeds being discontinued, does Zeiss intend on releasing a CP.3 Super Speed line to take their place?

A: there has been no official statement from Zeiss about a Cp.3 line of super speeds

Q: 7. Excuse me, which uv protecting glass can be usd with ZEISS Cp.3?

A: Like any cinema lens, the ZEISS Compact Prime CP.3 do not accept screw-in filters. Instead, filtration is provided via matte boxes and cut filters.

Q: 8. Will this provide lens data such as iris t-stop/f-stop to any camera with an electronic EF mount?

A: The ZEISS CP.3 lens you are referencing has a PL mount and the meta data can be read by any PL type camera using the Cooke i/technology interface. The meta data is also accessible via the side port and can be read by such devices like the Ambient Master Lockit Plus. This would be the option when the CP.3 is fixed with an EF mount.

Q: 9. Why are the CP2's more expensive than the cp3's? What are they offering that is better?

A: The CP3 are a huge leap forward in lens design. The basic improvements are they are more compact than the CP2'2 with 95mm fronts rather than 114mm. This in an age of smaller cameras and remote focus controls, this makes great sense. However, amazingly, in spite of being smaller, they still cover full frame. 15mm in Super35 is great but 15mm in full frame is fantastic. The CP3's, like the CP2's, are mount agnostic and in another significant step, are 8K ready. However, the huge step is achieved with the PL mount with eXtended Data option. With the help of an app, you can custom configure the lens's look by manipulating the lens metadata. This is a huge leap for professionals who are always searching for that new look. Now, not only can you correct lens aberrations, but you can add/decrease distortion, increase/decrease vignetting and otherwise amplify the look to your liking. With this incredible feature, I know Hollywood DP's will be lining up around the block to try it out.

Q: 10. Is this lens compatible with a Sony FS7 M2?

A: Yes, the ZEISS CP.3 lenses with E-mount will fit directly to any of the Sony video cameras, including the FS5, FS7 and FX9.

[T2.1] This lens has served well through the last 4 months. This lens produces a fantastic image quality. I am very picky when it comes to glass and the biggest thing I am looking for in a lens is little to no breathing. This lens produced no noticeable breathing when focused. Produces smooth, easy and precise focus pulls. Gears are smooth and easy to turn. Nucleus Nano had zero issues working with this lens and with such a large end to end pitch, it makes grabbing focus easy as pie.

[28mm] This lens is my bread and butter. For all of my client work I need something with a consistent look across the entire aperture range. Up until purchasing this lens my primary client glass was a sigma 24-70 2.8, which although beautiful, got soft when zoomed in to 50mm and under performed in other areas.

Aside from the performance of this lens, there are two things I adore: It's construction and color consistency. Despite being incredibly light, this lens is built like a tank. I travel frequently and it holds up very well. Because Zeiss improved the color rendition in the CP.3 line, I often rent the 85 or 100mm for my b-cam and have a easy time matching up cameras.

Much of my client work requires cropping in substantially (thanks Instagram) and I can comfortably shoot this at it's minimum aperture of T2.1 for a tack sharp image that can be scaled up in post.

I think this lens' greatest competition is the Canon CN-E line, which shoots warm and renders terrible onion skinning on the bokeh. For me this is unforgivable, and I'm happy to see a neutral, clean image coming from the CP.3 line. Assuming this is the look you need, I'm not sure you can get a better lens in this price bracket.

[4 lb] I seriously LOVE what these lenses do as an intro set of Cine glass. As a long time Sigma Art series user I didn't realize how much of an upgrade this was going to be from Photo glass. I'm super happy with the money i spent on this and also the 35mm. I will be getting the 24mm and 85mm ASAP!

[ARRI PL] I've had this lens for a little over one year now and it's basically lived on my Sony FX9 and FX6 since the moment it arrived to my door. The Zeiss CP.3 35mm lens is the perfect size and weight to fit in my backpack for when I need to pack light but packs the same punch as any top of the line cinema lens.

The optics on this lens are just outstanding. Beautiful color renditions matched with a tack sharp image really help get any job done.

I couldn't recommend this lens, or any of the other CP.3 lenses, more. It will definitely always have its place in my kit.

[T22] I've used ROKINON lenses which were quite above average. The Sirui anamorphic lens was even better. I just finished my first feature using the Sirui. Now that I just used this Meike FF on my Bmpcc4k for my trailer.... I am just blown away by the depth of field, bokeh and color depth of this lens. The quality, the weight, the build quality is on par to a much more expensive cine lens. This is the range of a 5k plus cine lens. I'm planning on buying the other focal lengths as well

[46.3 mm] Love everything about this lens; build quality, weight (light weight) and the optics are perfection. Elevates everything. Fantastic lens.

[15] I have all 3 of the available PL mount versions of these lenses. I used on 2 proffesional shoots and WOW WOW WOW - I still cant get over the IQ for the price but with only 1 gripe---lets get out of way-- (no focus marks on AC side) not a big deal using FF on op side typically or remote FF if I have an AC so its not really an issue) If you are looking here you like consider the DZO Vespid line. TRUE they have a full set. However they have a very vintage look with oval bokeh and bad CA(on a few focal lengths) Those are smaller lighter and MARGNIALLY sharper true) however these lens have very little CA very little if any breathing depending on FL- propper full 330 rotation on focus, they are bigger but still small- However dont look SILLY on my RED like the Vespids do. I cant say this enough MEIKE hit a homerun here and I have ZERO regrets. Just wish the whole set was already available (24mm coming end of NOV 21) ---you cant go wrong here.

[15] Has a nice weight to it, solid and smooth focus etc. Paired with a 50mm Meike and another BMCC 6k camera for a tighter second shot. Works really well, didn't need to use the provided shims

[28mm] B & H delivered my Meike lens on time and in excellent condition. The packaging was great and the lens is perfect. Couldn't be happier!
