Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. On/off switch?

A: There is not an on/off switch. It would need to either be unplugged or, preferably, muted (or turned all the way down) at the soundboard, for it to not be on. Also, this requires phantom power to operate. But all of those things are very deliberate and appropriate. Generally speaking, no mic in this class of mics anywhere has an on/off switch. Why? Because this mic is much more powerful and sensitive than a standard hand-held mic. And it is designed for picking up singers or instruments that are just out of reach to the mic anyways.. .and the act of a person just touching the mic, in a higher volume application, will easily cause a thumping sound noticeable to the audience. Again, rightly so. This is NOT suppose to have a person's mouth just a an inch or two away. That is not what this mic is for. It is for (a) recording a group of voices/instruments that are a few feet away, not inches away... so it picks up sounds that are further away than a hand held vocal mic will so. To do that, it is much more sensitive and shouldn't be touched during operation. If you have to move it during a performance, then the sound person should mute it at the soundboard during the move, your you'll hear lots of popping and cracking noises. That all being said, this is all the way it is suppose to work... if any of these things were not true, the mic wouldn't be able to accomplish its main missions very well. It does what it was designed to do VERY well at a GREAT price for the excellent quality of mic this is. i've used several of these for years and have been very happy with them.

Q: 2. Can you power these using 12V Phantom Power?

A: Yes, the Shure MX418D/C can operate using between 11 to 52V phantom power.

Q: 3. Will this work on a standard PA system or does it require a pre-amp?

A: This can connect to a standard XLR mic connection on a mixer. The mixer must provide 48v phantom power to run.

Q: 4. If 2 people were sitting at a table roughly 3-4 feet apart and this mic were set in between them would it pick them both up clearly?

A: The microphone may pick up some speech from both speakers if they are sitting side by side in front of the mic. However, as it is a cardioid mic (not omni), you may not get satisfactory results in terms of intelligibility with two speakers sitting opposite each other. We would recommend you use 2 of these mics, one for each speaker.

Q: 5. Would this mic work well for Podcasting, Virtual Meetings, Speech Videos? If not, would you recommend the Shure Sm57 or Sm7b?

A: Yes and Maybe. As a podium mic, which requires 48V phantom power, this mic MAY be a good choice, providing that it is connected to a device providing 48V phantom power, an audio interface or an audio mixer (with USB out) would be required to connect this mic to a computer. Examples include: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1479273-REG/focusrite_scarlett_solo_3g_scarlett_solo_usb_audio.html https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1251143-REG/shure_mvi_a_ltg_mvi_digital_audio.html/specs The Shure SM57 or SM7B are good choices, though are less sensitive mics, so require very close proximity (3-8") to the subject. These do not require phantom power, but would still require an audio interface to a computer. These 2 mics MAY also benefit greatly by using a Cloudlifter: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1177578-REG/cloud_microphones_cl_1_cloudlifter_mic_activator.html

Q: 6. Can this mic be used without phantom power?

A: The Shure CVG18-B/C is an Electret condenser microphone. This mic will require phantom power in order to operate.

Q: 7. Any idea how to store and transport several of these (we have 12)? I can't find any case made specifically for gooseneck microphones, at this point thinking of just buying multiple large hardshell cases and cutting out foam to somewhat fit them, not ideal or cheap but can't think of any other solution.

A: I don't really know. Ours came in a slim box and the mic was wrapped in bubble wraps.

Q: 8. Is the base threaded?

A: No

Q: 9. may be dumb question but will this stand on a desk without falling over or does it need mounted?

A: The desktop stand in this product should hold up the mic properly without falling.

Q: 10. Can I connect it to my laptop?

A: This condenser goose neck mic can be used with a computer with the addition of an audio interface, such as the Focusrite Scarlett Solo 2x2 USB Audio Interface (3rd Generation), BH #FOSCARSOLO3G. The audio interface can provide the necessary 48 volt phantom power that the mic requires, as well as convert the analog signal into a digital signal, which then conects via the included USB cable to your computer.

[Solid-State] This lectern mic has exactly the features we were looking for at our church: thin neck, solid base, flexible neck parts, and on/off button with status light. The sound quality and the sensitivity are very good at a reasonable price. Success!

[Black] We use this in our high-ceiling, 100 year-old church/worship hall that can be a difficult room to obtain optimal sound reinforcement. This mic replaced our much older Shure model that was only about 12 and the results are night and day. The 18 Shure really grabs the voice and channels it better than I expected. One of the reasons is that the extra length puts the mic closer to the reader's mouth (It also comes with a mounting base that you can drill/bolt onto a podium at the ideal spot for you). It is an excellent choice for having various readers each church mass, because there's no need to constantly adjust the sound. Even when readers forget to move the mic in the direction of their mouth (for excessively tall or short people) the mic still picks up beautifully. On that topic, when moving the mic, there is no noise picked up, so you can position it silently with no problem and without the need to mute the channel. Our sound system consists of a pair QSC KW 122s and now a 2nd pair of QSC K10's, routed through a DBX 231 eq and a Mackie ProFX 12 mixer with phantom power, which this mic requires. Pretty basic stuff, but highly effective at pushing sound for about 125-150 people. The reason I mention our system is that this mic will surely perform differently in different rooms. The only drawback is that depending on your speaker placement and what other mics you are using in the room (lavalieres for example), you may experience some feedback at higher levels because it really picks up a lot. So, with some care and consideration about such things, you can try to reduce or eliminate the other channels/sound going into this mic and creating a feedback loop. This mic's technology seems to be far superior to the older model, so it does a cleaner job of grabbing what you want and not what you don't. I highly recommend it, especially for churches or podium situations.
