With 10GBASE-T, migration to 10 GbE is dramatically simplified with backward compatibility for your existing GbE network infrastructure. Install an X550 adapter into a server and the auto-negotiation between 1 GbE and 10 GbE provides the necessary backwards compatibility that most customers require for a smooth transition and easy migration to 10 GbE. When time and budget allows, 10GBASE-T switches can be added any time to experience the full benefits of 10 GbE.
10GBASE-T uses the copper twisted-pair cables that are very familiar to IT professionals today. It is all you know and love about 1000BASE-T. The knowledge, training, and investment in BASE-T are preserved. 10GBASE-T is the easiest and most versatile 10 GbE interface that can be deployed anywhere in your data center. Its flexible reach from 1 meter to 100 meters supports the latest network architectures including Top of Rack (ToR), Middle of Row (MoR), and End of Row (EoR).

The Intel Ethernet Converged Network Adapter X550 is low-cost way to deploy 10 GbE in your data center. The Intel X550 uses low-cost Cat6 and Cat6a cabling. Chances are this cabling already exists in the data center. A way for Intel to reduce cost and power is to integrate components into a single-chip solution. Why is integration important? First, integration translates to lower power. This means no active heat sink and reduces the per-port power consumption. Second, integration also means a lower cost per port, because two separate components are not needed. When cabling is accounted for, cost efficiencies realized from a single part mean 10GBASE-T is low-cost media to deploy. With lower cost and power, 10GBASE-T is ideal for broad deployment. 10GBASE-T is a solution for every rack and tower server in the data center.

Converging data and storage onto one fabric eliminates the need for multiple adapters and cables per server. Furthermore, 10 GbE provides the bandwidth to converge these multiple fabrics into a single wire. A key capability that makes all this possible is traffic class separation provided by Data Center Bridging (DCB). DCB provides a collection of standards for additional QoS functionality such as lossless delivery, congestion notification, priority-based flow control, and priority groups. This enables the CNA X550 family to provide a one-wire solution with virtual pipes for the different classes of traffic.

Virtualization changes server resource deployment and management by running multiple applications and operating systems on a single physical server. With Intel Virtualization Technology for connectivity, the CNA X550 family delivers outstanding I/O performance and QoS in virtualized data centers and cloud environments. I/O virtualization advances network connectivity used in servers to more efficient models by providing FPP, multiple Tx/Rx queues, Tx queue rate-limiting, and on-controller QoS functionality that is useful for both virtual and non-virtual server deployments.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can this be used with a 2013 Mac that has a thunderbolt 1 connection if we use a TB2 to TB3 adaptor? I realize the speed with be slower, but will it work?

A: You would be able to use the Sonnet Twin 10G Thunderbolt 3 to Dual-Port 10 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter on a older Mac computer using Thunderbolt and an adapter.

Q: 2. Can this car be added to a windows pc? Also can it be link aggregated?

A: The Synology E10G30-T2 2-Port 10G RJ45 Ethernet to PCIe 3.0 Adapter Card, B&H # SYE10G30T2, is designed to work with specific Synology NAS enclosures, it does not officially support Windows OS. Link aggregation is supported when using it with a compatible Synology NAS.

Q: 3. Can this device be used to connect a usb printer to a network?

A: no

Q: 4. Does this one work with Synology 1817+ or is there another one that works?

A: The Synology E10G21-F2 Dual Port 10G SFP+ PCIe 3.0 Ethernet Adapter is not compatible with the Synology DS1817+. For that NAS, you'll need the Synology E10G18-T2 Dual-Port 10 Gb/s PCIe Expansion Card (BH #SYE10G18T2, https://bhpho.to/3HGAbAN).

Q: 5. Could the Thunderbolt 3 be conected to a USB-C. I know that Thunderbolt 3.1 and USB-C are compatible but not sure for Thunderbolt 3.0?

A: there is currently no thunderbolt 3.1. USB-C will fit but may not provide enough bandwith or power for this device to function properly

Q: 6. Is this rated for 10 GbE speeds?

A: Data Transfer Rate: 10/100/1000 Mb/s

Q: 7. Is this now compatible with M1 Mac Book Pro's?

A: The Sonnet Twin 10G Thunderbolt 3 to Dual-Port 10 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter is compatible with M1 MacBook Pro models.

Q: 8. Does this support 802.1Q VLAN tagging?

A: Yes, the Intel I350-T4V2 Ethernet Server Adapter has 802.1Q VLAN support.

Q: 9. What's the difference between this and the older, non v2 version?

A: The difference may seem minor but noteworthy. From an Intel forum, "the new version (I350-T4V2) which have the AUX Power component changes that will result in a decrease of in-rush current during power supply start-up. Product functionality does not change."

Q: 10. Will it function within a 1817+?

A: The Synology E10G21-F2 Dual Port 10G SFP+ PCIe 3.0 Ethernet Adapter BH #SYE10G21F2 is not designed to with with an 1817+.

[ PCIe 3.0 x4] I replaced 100mb Network cards in ten WinXP PCs with the StarTech 10/100/1000 cards, and the upgrade went great. All the drivers installed no problem, and the response time improvement on the network was exactly as I hoped - lightning fast!

[ PCIe 3.0 x4] I replaced a single NIC in an older Dell Optiplex that I use to run pfSense. It was recognized immediately and drivers were already present. Adopted immediately and after assigning the proper interface designations, it was up and running. I purchased this through B&H because I trust them to make sure it's actually in Intel card. While attempting this project, I have learned the hard way, that you get what you pay for. Trust B&H !!

[ PCIe 3.0 x4] Worked great in my HP Z640. All I had left available in my expansion slots was an older style PCI slot. I needed another network port and this worked great.

[ PCIe 3.0 x4] Originally bought the wrong card with the ports for using fiber or something, so after figuring that out we had it replaced with this. THIS is the model you can plug normal RJ45 Ethernet cables into. The difference in the name is , I think ONE letter, so be vigilant. This was crazy easy to install, too. Just remember you ethernet cables need to be Cat6A or higher. Cat 7, 8, etc... work just fine. Just don't go lower than Cat6A, imo.

[ PCIe 3.0 x4] Genuine Intel product verified by the bradyid website. Date of manufacture was the month prior to purchasing. You're not going to find a better adapter than this one supported by as many operating systems as this one. If you need a quad port gigabit NIC you shouldn't be considering any other product. You can buy from B&H with confidence. A lot of other online stores will sell you a knock-off product that is not as fast or stable as genuine Intel.
