$1,287.00 $1,544.40

Building upon the success of the OP-1, the Teenage Engineering OP-Z is a portable all-in-one synthesizer and 16-track multimedia sequencer. The device can not only produce complete music tracks and sound effects, but is also capable of MIDI, CV, & trigger track sequencing, image & 3D graphic sequencing, and DMX light sequencing.

All 16 tracks can run independently, allowing for individual track speed and length. What's more, each step of the sequencer offers component sequencing, which adds variations per cycle, note variations, micro-sequencing, direction, parameter changes, re-triggers, and more. There are 14 different components, and each has 10 values and behavior programs, which totals 140 ways to alter a single step.

All keys are backlit with multicolor LEDs with instant machine feedback, a convenient feature for dark stages and poorly lit environments. Even the print on the unit uses a special glow-in-the-dark paint to keep you on point during a performance. There is no built-in LED screen. Instead, the OP-Z connects to your iOS device and takes advantage of its high-resolution retina display. A free iOS application pairs the two devices and further expands the feature set. Photomatic allows you to capture and arrange photographs into synchronized stop-motion photography with effects or import custom graphics and animate them in pace with your music. Media can easily be imported into the system via Dropbox. To eliminate any latency between image and sound, the OP-Z sound engine is ported to run simultaneously on your iOS device, which enables dual-domain synthesis.

Teenage Engineering have worked closely with Keijiro Takahashi and the Unity Tokyo Studio to fully integrate the OP-Z with the Unity Game Engine, allowing for stunning 3D graphics that run at full speed on an iPhone or iPad. The included toolset allows you to create your own graphics and 3D animation projects that can be integrated into the OP-Z performance platform.

An updated tape feature secretly records everything that is programmed into the sequencer in real time. With its own dedicated track, it is possible to sequence the tape and trigger the in-point, length, and speed. There are several different tape reels with different characters, which allow you to scrub, scratch, wind-up, and mess-up any programming. The OP-Z ships with a USB charging and control cable.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. It looks like this doesn't come with a power supply. If that is correct, is there an approved one for this unit?

A: The KeyStep offers two options for powering. The USB port can connect to a computer for both power and data. The USB cable can also be used with a wall plug (the type that you would use to charge a phone), such as the Xuma 2.4A USB Charger with Folding Prongs (B&H # XUCAC124). The other option for powering is to use a standard 9V DC 500mA center positive (5.5 X 2.1 X 12mm) power adapter, such as the BOSS PSA-120S AC Adapter (B&H # BOPSA120S2). Here is a link for the product manual -- see page 15 for info regarding the power options. http://downloads.arturia.net/products/keystep/manual/KeyStep_Manual_1_0_0_EN.pdf

Q: 2. Can the OP-1 field fit in the case with the decksaver cover?

A: The teenage engineering Large Duty Bag for OP-1 was designed to hold the teenage engineering OP-1 Field Portable Synthesizer Workstation by itself and may not be large enough to support the thickness of the OP-1 with the Decksaver Cover attached.

Q: 3. how to hook up ms 20 to sq1?

A: Well, you can1) Connect 5-pin MIDI out of SQ1 into 5-pin MIDI In on MS20. You cannot transpose with the MS20 kbd2) Set Gate Out polarity to negative on SQ1 - read the manual section on global parameter settings for this. Set Channel A to 8V (Hz/v), connect CV-A and Gate-A of SQ1 to VCO 1+2 CV IN and TRIG In on MS20 respectively. You cannot transpose with the MS20 kbd 3) Set Gate out as in 2 above, but set Channel A to 1, 2, or 5V. Connect Gate-A as in 2 above, connect CV-A to TOTAL input on MS20, and adjust the Freq Mod MG/T.EXT until you get correct scaling - eg if SQ1 is set to 1V output, then a pitch knob should change by exactly one octave from fully CCW to fully CW. The MG/T.EXT knob will be in the 7-8 range, but this is very sensitive - a pain to set!. The benefit is that you can now transpose the incoming sequence with the SM20 kbd.

Q: 4. Play from Amazon music iPad app?

A: teenage engineering OD-11 Wireless Cloud Speaker (Black) ,BH #TE007AS002AU, will access Apple Airplay and Apple Music, iTunes from the iPad app. The OD-11 works out of the box with AirPlay on Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV.

Q: 5. The 1/4 TS outputs, do the channels stay broken out so one is the right channel (ring) and the other the left (tip)? Or, do the L/R channels combined and thus both 1/4s are the same, mono version of the input?

A: The teenage engineering Field Audio Cable 3.5mm to Dual 1/4" splits a stereo audio signal to separate left and right mono channels, not dual mono where the audio is the same on both sides.

Q: 6. Hi - Is it possible to save/export your loops and beats to other hardware and software? Many thanks, Dave.

A: At this time exporting and transferring data from the PO-12 to an external device is not possible.

Q: 7. Does it come with the boxes that hold the tx6 tp7 and cm15

A: The teenage engineering Field Delivery Bag does not come with any boxes. What you may be thinking of are the labelled compartments, which are part of the bag.

Q: 8. what is the pass code to connect via wi fi?

A: There are several different ways to configure the OD-11 to connect with your network via wifi. Please see the link to the online setup and follow the instructions for your particular setup: https://a href= http://teenageengineering.com/guides/od-11 target= _blank teenageengineering.com/guides/od-11/a

Q: 9. Can the Korg SQ1 be used to sequence lights for a light show?

A: If your light board can accept the CV/GATE OUT, MIDI OUT or USB MIDI instructions from the KORG, then yes.

Q: 10. Hi there anyone tried to use Arturia Beatstep Controller & Sequencer, in roland V-1HD video switcher? I need to control the audio and add some custom keys to effects. Thanks

A: The Arturia Beatstep is a universal MIDI controller that allows users to control software programs. You may use it to control audio functions within a program and parameters within the given program, but not the Roland V-1HD.

[Via USB port] I am truly amazed at how much technology is packed into this tiny device. It is the size of a tv remote control, yet it packs in a multitrack sequencer, sampling, light and video controls and so much more.

Yes, there is a learning curve, simply because of the number of features it has. Once you get the hang of it, you probably will take it everywhere with you.

I own multiple synths, sequencers and groove boxes, this unit I capable of replacing all of them, but even more intriguing is it’s ability to integrate with them and enhance your entire setup.

[Via USB port] I'm a longtime fan of Teenage Engineering gear, and I pretty much have the whole lot: OP-1f, TP-7, TX-6, EP-133, it goes on. I'm not sure why I never picked up an OP-Z but I finally did and what a fun little device it is.
It's really not as inscrutable as it may seem, even having no display you can pretty much figure everything out that you want to do even without using the phone app. It's certainly a more feature packed device than say the EP-133 (which I was able to pretty much pick up within a couple hours of use), so the OP-Z will probably take several focused sessions with the manual to really understand what you can do with it.
All that said, it's a fun device that I am glad to now own. We will see how the hardware holds up physically, as I understand some people have some issues with bending and such over time. I take pretty good care of my equipment so I'm not too concerned.

[Via USB port] I've spent around 30 hours with the OP-Z and I've had a tremendous amount of fun. While I bought the bundle, I have yet to use the lab module. I do like the rumble module much more than I thought I would. It feels a little gimmicky at first, but I find myself missing it when I turn it off to save battery (the module seems to drain the battery pretty quickly).

The one and only negative is the fact the the battery arrived completely dead. It must have been sitting on the shelf for so long that the Li-Ion battery went into a deep sleep mode and it refused to charge. I followed the instructions to revive the battery on the Teenage Engineering site, but had no luck.

Finally, I found a Reddit post suggesting a "jumpstarting" technique that required me to strip a USB cable down the the bare wires and hold the wires to the battery contacts for a few seconds. This sounded a little nuts, but I gave it a shot and sure enough the battery was once again capable of charging.

The battery issue appears to be relatively common. If anyone else happens to run into the problem, this is the video that saved me the trouble of exchanging: https://youtu.be/WFd1CXbRsvs (titled "revive cellphone batteries from deep sleep")

[0.6 lb] Synth and sequencer, i must say there is a learning curve to this just like the OP-1 but it makes some pretty sweet sounds. As I have heard it described it is like a Pocket Operator on steroids. I just upgraded the Device last night and am starting to understand everything it can do. It is quite a bit smaller than the OP-1, that’s for sure. Only wish is it had a decent case ;)

[USB Type-C] Most fun I’ve had making music in a very long time. Portable with solid synth engines and an unbelievably powerful sequencer. The finish is great and I love the look as well. The speaker is weak so will definitely want to use with headphones. Haven’t even uploaded my own sounds yet because the stock ones have given me plenty to work with. Would definitely recommend for people who like to pick something up and make music instantly

[Via USB port] After watching YouTube videos about the OP-Z for months, I finally decided to take the plunge. Dynamite comes in small packages... and this little guy is one capable sequencer, sampler, pocket synth / groove box, portable, battery powered monster. You can take it and capture musical ideas anywhere... and even the synth engines here sound punchy and sweet. The OP-Z is truly a pocket powerhouse.

Now on to purchasing one of these little monsters. DON'T BUY THESE ON AMAZON! PLEASE! The same vendor sold me 2 of them and both were defective on arrival. I'm still chasing down the $1200 I dropped in the process.

Not sure why I didn't go directly to B&H. I certainly do for all of my photography needs, but I sometimes forget to check for music gear. Regardless of the product, B&H always delivers. It's a well run and finely tuned machine.

[USB Type-C] The OP-Z is a pretty cool piece of kit on its own, but the Oplab module increases its value by quite a bit as a means to connect 3.5 / DIN MIDI in and out, and/or control voltage outputs, giving you a powerful but very portable sequencer for external gear. The roll-up bag is useful too and can carry not just the OP-Z but USB cables, the MIDI-TRS adapter, etc, in a very small space.

The pricing on this bundle is a great deal.

I bought my OP-1 and the original Oplab in a similar bundle years ago and both units have brought me many years of use (even though the original Oplab had its issues). This Oplab Module is even better as it fits right into the OP-Z and doesn't require any extra power.

[USB Type-C] Way more than should be possible in such a small box. Sounds great and is really amazing with audio over usb.

[0.6 lb] I got my OP-Z a few months ago now, and I absolutely love it. It's incredibly powerful and well designed, with relatively intuitive controls (considering it has no screen). I also love that TE is still adding new features occasionally via software updates.
That said, I do question the price tag that comes along with this synth. I recently purchased Andrew Huang's new app flip, which contains a sample sequencer within it. The app is only $10. I am the first to admit that this is an unfair comparison- the OP-Z is so much more than a sampler- but I think it's important to consider cheaper alternatives such as this.
Bottom line: I love this thing. I use it almost every day, and once the virus is taken care of I look forward to using the performance features that it has as well. I'd highly recommend it whether you're looking to get more into synthesis or you're a long-time synth nerd (as I am).
