Add five additional drive bays to your Synology DiskStation DS1817+ and DS1517+. Supporting 2.5" SATA hard drives and SSDs, as well as 3.5" SATA hard drives, the DX517 is a flexible solution supporting on-the-fly volume expansion or serving as a local backup destination.

Managed from DiskStation Manager on the host NAS, the additional bays in the DX517 are immediately ready to be used once connected. On-the-fly volume expansion helps ensure that storage and services on the host are not interrupted during volume expansion.

The hot-swappable drive trays of DX517 allow drive installation and replacement without powering down the system. A screwless drive tray design also helps reduce the time needed for system setup.

Synology's DX517 can be used as a dedicated local backup solution for the Synology DiskStation DS1817+ or DS1517+. When created as a separate volume, the DX517 provides a great backup solution to its local hard disks in case of system failure.

[Yes] The easiest way to add storage to your existing Synology! Was contemplating getting this or just picking up a new NAS, but this is defiantly the way to go. No need to look at specs, just plug it in, plug drives in and you're off to the races! 5

[2x 80 mm Fans] Fast shipping in a very good package. The cost of this bare expansion enclosure is kind of high but that the best market price I can get at the time during the novel coronavirus peak condition. The device is solid build and reasonable solution for me without replacing a more expansive 5-bay DS1019+, a $650 unit from B&H. 5

[12 lb] Unpacked, added drives, changed raid type AND expanded storage pool. It took over two weeks for the changes to complete, but I could use my NAS the entire time without interruption! I now have 30 more TBs of storage and 2 drive error protection. 5

[1x eSATA] Easy to install 5 new 16 TB Ironwolf drives into. I created a new volume and waited a couple days for it to format and do it’s Synology configuration. This is a great way to expand your compatible Synology NAS. It is a little slower in R&W speeds than my main unit ( DX1621 ). Future needs: I can always add one more DX517. But I doubt I will need to. 5

[1 x 200 W] I had an old Drobo that died (the unit, not the drives) and it was going to be almost as expensive as this Synology to repair, so I figured I'd switch (fortunately I had a backup of the Drobo) I installed the drives from the Drobo, it formatted them, and I was able to successfully copy terabytes of data from the second Drobo to the Synology. I'm going to get another one as a replacement for the second Drobo - who knows how long it'll last 5

[1x eSATA] Adding this to our DS923+ couldn't have been simpler. Installed 5 x 16tb drives, plugged in the locking cable, and was up and running in minutes. The Synology interface makes it incredibly easy to configure RAID settings and to move resources from one pool to another. I highly recommend this if you're looking to expand your existing Synology NAS! 5

[12 lb] I started with 4, 4TB drives in my Synology DS920+. I soon replaced those with larger drives. When that was no longer enough, I added the DX517 and bought one more 4TB drive, which added about 14TB to my total usable storage. It was a very fast and easy upgrade. I can also easily expand my storage even more by merely replacing those 4TB drives with larger ones. I read a lot of reviews beforehand and for safety, ended up creating a second volume; so, each unit has its own. I had to move some folders around to make sense of it all but that too was fast and easy. This was a very cost-effective way to expand my NAS and I am very pleased with the results. 5
