Canon Circular Polarizer - Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun.

If you're out walking on a lovely day - in the mountains or at the beach - and you want to get a fabulous shot of a cloud-filled sky or make the water seem more saturated, then a polarizer is the way to go. This filter is the best way to make the clouds stand out, increase or decrease the saturation of the ocean or increase or decrease the reflection off the water. You can also use this filter when shooting into glass or windows since it will, again, either increase or decrease reflections.

If you're shooting black and white and want to simulate a threatening storm, try throwing on a #25 Red filter. The vista will take on the appearance of an imminent, ominous storm.

Along with a UV or Skylight Filter, a polarizing filter should be a part of everyone's gear bag. It can turn a run-of-the-mill image into a stunning, creative photo by increasing color saturation.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does this come complete with the filter holder or do I need to buy a holder separately.

A: This drop-in circular polarizer will come with a filter holder. You do not need to buy another one, unless you have other 52mm filters that you would like to use, and would like to be able to switch them out as quickly as possible.

Q: 2. Need to locate a Canon 52mm drop in rear UV only filter. My Canon 300 mm 2.8 lens came with a gealtin filter and I purchased a cicurlar polariser drop in filter.

A: If you want a screw in UV filter and the lens you have is Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens B&H # CA30028LIS2 MFR # 4411B002, You first need this holder, Canon - Drop-In Filter Holder for 52mm Screw-In Filters B&H # CAFHS52 MFR # 2612A001.And there are many uv filters and this is one I feel will fit best for that holder, B+W 52mm XS-Pro UV Haze MRC-Nano 010M Filter B&H # BWUVXSP52 MFR # 66-1066117.Note, you cannot use the Canon 2585A001 52mm Circular Polarizing Filter (Rear Drop-in) at the same time as the UV filter.

Q: 3. Will this work in a Canon 300mm 2.8 IS first version?

A: For 300 f2.8 IS first version you will need Canon 2585A001 52mm Circular Polarizing Filter (Rear Drop-in) BH #CACPDI52 • MFR #2585A001

Q: 4. Is this version I or II?

A: Canon 2585A001 52mm Circular Polarizing Filter (Rear Drop-in) B&H # CACPDI52 MFR # 2585A001 Is in fact the Version I filter. The Version II is the PL-C 52WIIa href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/763727-REG/Canon_4774B001_52mm_Drop_in_Circular_Polarizing.html target= _blank http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/763727-REG/Canon_4774B001_52mm_Drop_in_Circular_Polarizing.html/aHoweve4r, as mentioned the older Version I on this page will fit both the older Version I IS super telep-hotos and the new Mk II Canon super-telephotos

Q: 5. What is the major differences between the PL-C 52 and the PL-C 52Wll?

A: The difference between the PL-C 52 and the PL-C 52WII is that the PL-C 52WII has a wheel so that you can rotate the Polarizer while it is in the lens. This a very valuable feature and well worth the extra bit of cash.

Q: 6. does this fit canon 500 f4 first generation?

A: Hi, yes, this filter will fit the first generation 500mm f/4L lens.

Q: 7. Does this work with the 200-400 F4.0 1.4X L extender zoom?

A: That lens requires the Canon PL-C 52WII 52mm Drop-In Circular Polarizing Filter.

Q: 8. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 1.Canon 2585A001 52mm Circular Polarizing Filter (Rear Drop-in)AND2.Canon PL-C 52WII 52mm Drop-In Circular Polarizing FilterOTHER THAN THEIR PRICES?

A: I asked the same question and was told that the WII is for a version 2 of the lens... I ordered the 2585A001 to fit my 300mm 2.8 Version 1 and it works great, the only difficult thing with this polariser for the 300mm 2.8 i is that when the lens it attached to my 7D mark 2 there is not very much space to fit you finger in to roll the adjustment wheel as the nose of the flash mount is right in the way, in fact to remove the polariser you have to remove the lens from the camera body....if you use a teleconverter this is no problem at all. Also the colour of the lens coating in older lens is slightly different in the newer L lenses. I don't know if the WII would fit every lens

Q: 9. How does this compare to normal polarizing filters like the Breakthrough or Hoya ones? Are you able to replace the filter with one of those into the holder?

A: This is not the same as the drop-in filter holder. You cannot change the filter. The polariser is permanently attached, and rotated by a wheel on the outside. Given that these are only added to Canon lenses above $5k, the optical properties of the filter should not be in question. They should be better than any third party offering, because they are designed for (and tested?) with this specific range of Canon lenses.

Q: 10. Please give one detailed explanation of best usage when used 90 to sun

A: If you want to get a fabulous shot of a cloud-filled sky or make the water seem more saturated, then a polarizer is the way to go. This filter is the best way to make the clouds stand out, increase or decrease the saturation of the ocean or increase or decrease the reflection off the water. You can also use this filter when shooting into glass or windows since it will, again, either increase or decrease reflections.

[0.265 lb] I am using this drop in filter in a Canon RF 600mm f4 lens. Due to the large diameter of the front element (7) it is impossible to use an external filter. The drop in filter is convenient to use and provides the ability to filter polarized light. The filter has an adjustment wheel to rotate the polarizer. The system works well.

[Aluminum] A polarizer is just a necessary accessory for any lens if you shoot outdoors. Obviously, you won't use it all the time, but on those occasions when you need to control glare, it works great with no really discernable color shift or any reduction in quality/sharpness. Canon knows this is for pro photographers so the quality is there. The only thing that I wish it had was a way to index the polarizer with a tactile feedback so you can set the index to the optimal orientation and then quickly rotate the polarizer 90 degrees without having to visually re-adjust the polarizer when rotating the lens from landscape to portrait. When shooting sports you rarely have time to do this so you just forego the polarizer on these shots and just adjust your exposure, but what a great feature if you had the option to instantly rotate your polarizer by a click and know that you are getting a consistent shot with glare AND exposure.

[0.265 lb] Great piece to have with your long canon telephoto. Polarizers are a great addition to any kit, and this one is a quick and simple alternative to bulky and costly matte box rigs.

[0.265 lb] After using in mt EF 600mm f4L IS II I started thinking this should be how all lenses used filters. The thumb wheel works flawlessly as it sits just below where I put my hand to steady the lens on my gimbal or monopod. It gets rid of the nasty mid day glare from animal faces and backs. And I love the new detail I am pulling out of bird feathers as well as opting to reduce or eliminate reflections. This is making me consider the filter holder ef to rf adapter as I still use a lot of ef glass with my R5.

[Dedicated] This is an easy-to-use polarizer that comes in a nice, solid case. For bird photography it helps get the glare off the water and for birds in trees it helps get some of the sheen off the leaves, increasing the depth of color. Like all polarizers it takes away light, so it's more useful in brighter light. It snaps in and out reasonably easy - not effortless - but good. If Canon had put round bevels on some of the edges it might self-align better when installing but that would be extra credit. I particularly like the arrow on top showing which way faces front. I wish the default filter that comes with the 500mm f/4 II also had this arrow. I'll probably draw one on. If you shoot birds on water this filter is an absolute must.
