Distinguished by its refined physical construction, the IRIX 11mm f/4 Lens for Nikon F Blackstonefrom IRIX 11mm f/4 Lens for Nikon F Blackstoneis an ultra-wide prime designed for Nikon F-mount DSLRs. As a rectilinear lens, the advanced optical layout makes use of aspherical, extra-low dispersion, and high-refractive index elements to control distortion and aberrations for accurate, and sharp rendering with a high degree of clarity and color accuracy. Additionally, a Neutrino coating has also been applied to the lens to control flare and ghosting for improved contrast when working in strong lighting conditions.

Beyond its optical assets, this 11mm f/4 lens also sports a manual focus design for fine-tuned control, and incorporates a unique positive focus lock to secure the focusing position at any point for consistent, repeatable shooting. As the Blackstone version of this focal length, this lens is also distinguished by an aluminum and magnesium alloy exterior, engraved lens markings with fluorescent UV paint for high visibility, and extensive weather-sealing about the lens to permit working in harsh environments.

The Blackstone version of the 11mm f/4 lens features a durable aluminum and magnesium alloy housing and weather-resistant exterior along with inner seals, and an extra seal at the front element, to protect against dust and moisture intrusion. The metal exterior also distinguishes itself with an anti-scratch finish, and sports engraved focus distance and depth of field scales with fluorescent UV paint for high visibility when working in low-light conditions.

Ultra wide-angle prime designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs, this lens can also be used on DX models where it provides a 16.5mm equivalent focal length.

Three aspherical, four high-refractive index, and two extra-low dispersion elements are featured within the optical design to limit both spherical and chromatic aberrations, as well as color fringing and distortion, for improved clarity, sharpness, and even illumination.

A Neutrino coating has been applied to limit lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity.

Manual focus designed is benefitted by a positive focus lock mechanism to secure your focus position at any point to limit unwanted shifting of focus.

A hard click stop indicates the infinity position on the focus ring for easy use in low-visibility conditions.

Large depth of field scale benefits using hyperfocal and pre-focus techniques.

Built-in petal-shaped lens hood blocks stray light in order to reduce lens flare, and also protects the front element of the lens.

Rear of the lens accepts 30 x 30mm cut gel filters.

Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to smooth bokeh.

Includes complimentary additional rear lens cap.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Why does this lens have electronics? Is the aperture electronically controlled?

A: Per the manual: The lens aperture is operated electronicallythrough the camera.

Q: 2. Can the aperture be controlled by a dead adapter like the FotodioX Pro TLT ROKR Tilt-Shift Adapter for Nikon F Lens to Sony E?

A: The aperture in the IRIX 11mm f/4 Firefly Lens is only controlled electronically. So the Fotodiox tilt/shift adapter would not be able to control the aperture.

Q: 3. Can someone please explain or help me to understand how to read the hyperfocal scale on this lens? I have never had a problem using hyperfocal scales on any of my other lenses, but this one is quite perplexing to me, there are so many values on it.

A: If you are old school and know how to use the hyperfocal scale on manual lenses, then work as you have before. If you wish, you can also use the innovative hyperfocal indication line but really it is meant for others. That is because, ever since auto focus lenses came into use, they have mostly come without manual aperture scales since they had no place for the scales to be applied. Therefore a generation of photographers has grown up not knowing what they are for or how to use them. With Irix's hyperfocal line, the new user determines what aperture they are using, moves the focus ring to line up the aperture number on the Irix hyperfocal line with the lens focus mark. Then they look to the aperture numbers on the traditional scale to see the hyperfocal distance or the area that is in acceptable focus. To old users it is not necessary, to new users it is very helpful.

Q: 4. Is this a fisheye lenses? Thanks

A: The IRIX 11mm f/4 Firefly Lens for Canon EF is an ultra-wide-angle lens, but it's not technically a fisheye lens--it doesn't create a circular image and it has been designed to minimize some of the distortion inherent in a lens with a focal length this wide.

Q: 5. Anyone using this with a c100 mkii? If so, thoughts?

A: The IRIX 11mm f/4 Blackstone Lens for Canon EF is an excellent choice for someone interested in a super wide angle rectilinear lens for the C100 Mk II Digital Cinema Camera. The rectilinear design limits image distortion and the lens uses a positive lock mechanism that will make it easier to pull focus consistently and accurately.

Q: 6. Will this work on the BMPCC4K with a Metabones Speedbooster (MFT to EF) ? Will there be vignetting?

A: Both the 0.71 and the 0.64 Metabones Speedbooster, show little to no vignetting.

Q: 7. is it compatible with Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 6K Pro?

A: Yes, IRIX 11mm f/4 Firefly Lens for Canon EF is compatible with Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro. Both products are desing with Canon EF mount.

Q: 8. Can anyone tell me how to read/use the hyperfocal scale on this lens? I know what hyperfocal focus is and on most other lenses I know how to use it, but the scale on this lens is truly perplexing to me - specifically, why are there multiple aperture values on both the left and right sides of the centre mark? And there's also another hyperfocal marker above the distances as you approach the infinity mark. So far I've only been able to test it visually by taking the same photo at different focus values and comparing them on my computer to see which are the most in-focus. This is by no means a very technical approach to achieving the proper focus, so I'm very interested in learning how to properly use the hyperfocal scale on this lens. Thanks in advance for any information anyone can provide!

A: The aperture scales on the left and right of the focus mark indicate the approximate distances from the focal plane of the camera within which the image will be acceptable sharp at the current focus setting. It's referred to as a depth of field scale. The hyperfocal scale allows you to set your focus to the approximate hyperfocal distance for your current aperture, by aligning the f/number on the scale with the center focus mark. Irix has a good article on their site explaining DoF, hyperfocal distance and how to use both scales.

Q: 9. Is there an 150mm filter holder for this lens

A: Not that I know of that we sell, there may be some coming soon from Nisi, Lee, Fotodiox, etc..

Q: 10. Can we get ND filter for this lense ?

A: Yes, But a adapters are needed. Please look into the following item. Cokin Universal X-Pro Series Filter Holder Adapter Ring https://bhpho.to/37clouY Cokin X-Pro Series Filter Holder https://bhpho.to/3C9fTLZ

[9, Rounded] I bought the blackstone and the nice integration with the Pentax k1mk2 and SR makes it a winning combination. Optical quality is tremendous for this cost of lens, the way it handles is really really nice. Focus ring is not to stiff or to loose, just right. Focus lock is a nice feature and the minimum focus distance is 1 foot. Pretty amazing for tight perspectives in the industrial work I do

[3.075 lb] I have been swapping lenses and have replaced all of them with the exception of this incredible ultra wide angle lens. The packaging is very unique and the lens will surely outlive me. I am using it on a Canon EOS R6 with the control ring adapter.

[f/4] A very substantial and solidly built piece of glass. Excellent quality. The lens is very sharp with great color and contrast. If you're like me, you may need to work on your focusing skills since it's a manual focus lens. Usually not an issue because infinity covers a huge area in such a wide angle lens. Irix is very proud of their packaging but I found it pretty insubstantial. The can is very flimsy and thin. Not nearly as tough as your average coffee can. B&H might consider packaging this with a little extra padding. UPS, my least favorite carrier, was pretty rough with mine and the can was actually bent. Fortunately, the very nice semi-hard lens case that comes with the Blackstone version did a nice job of protecting the lens. If you need or just want a super wide angle non-fisheye lens, this is a great value.

[f/4] I've used this lens for a couple of years now, gotta say, it's a very sharp lens. I set the aperture at F8, turn the focus ring until it clicks at infinity, & I'm all set.
Keep this thing level and you'll love the results.
Using the Irix ND filters that slide in the back of the lens , allow for some interesting long exposures, without the use of expensive filter holders.
Using with my D850 is a compelling combo.
Don't use it as much as my 14mm or 20mm, but when you want everything in the frame, the Irix wins!

[9, Rounded] I ordered the blackstone version of the lens after hearing the positive reviews associated with the lens when it was originally announced several months ago. I have used the lens dozens upon dozens of times since purchasing and I have been nothing short of 100% satisfied.

SHARPNESS/QUALITY: For nature photography this lens provides very sharp images with only the very corners being slightly softer wide open. When stopped down to b/t f/5.6-11 the sharpness is nothing short of perfect at any distance. The distortion and chromatic aberrations produced by the lens are well controlled and less significant than other ultra wide lenses that are far more expensive

FOCUS: Focusing is so simple for landscapes as setting the lens to infinity will maintain ideal focus on any object further than 10 ft distance even at f/4. Focus was near perfect when it arrived on my D750 and required no adjustment.

BUILD: The build is top notch and I have no complaints. Feels as tough as any pro level lens. The focus ring is very sturdy and smooth so I have never had the focus slip, I rarely use the focus lock for that reason. Weather proofing is enough to keep rain from penetrating the barrel.

I have included an image I took recently with the IRIX 11mm at f/8.

[Manual Focus] I'm an architectural photographer.
The widest lens I use is 14-24mm.
I figured I'd give this a try, why not?
11mm is as wide as its gets (on full frame) without going to a fisheye.
I was pleasantly surprised. Really good sharpness. Very little CA & very little barrel distortion. As good as I've seen.

[f/4] I just unboxed this lens and grabbed a quick shot in my back yard to check the claims about lack of distortion. My first impression? This thing is WIDE! Second? The claims about distortion are true. You'll see a hint of curvature in the corners, but the lens correction profile for ACR dealt with that perfectly, as well as the tiny bit of vignetting in the corners. I'm impressed. The lens is solid, well-built, sharp and no trouble at all to work with, despite the manual focus. (Focus confirmation works, too.) I can't wait to see how much of the Milky Way I can capture with this beast! This is the widest angle of view I've ever had with my DSLR and absolutely worth the price! It's about time someone combined quality and affordability like this!
