The 72mm Hoya YA3 Pro Orange Filter 72mmcan be used to increase image contrast when photographing using a film camera system with black-and-white film installed. This filter's effect corresponds to that of a Wratten 21 filter. Wavelengths of visible light that are apparent as green, blue, and violet colors to the human eye are suppressed, while visible light associated with yellow, orange, and red colors are able to more easily pass through the Hoya 72mm YA3 Pro Orange Filter and into the lens it is mounted in front of. When photographing with this filter along with black-and-white film, green, blue, and violet-colored subjects within a scene are reproduced in dark shades of gray than if a filter was not used. Simultaneously, yellow, orange, and red subjects are rendered in light shades of gray.

When applied to black-and-white photography, the increased contrast provided by the Hoya 72mm YA3 Pro Orange Filter can result in dark skies with very defined clouds. Shades of green among foliage can be much more differentiated relative to skin tones, while the appearance of freckles and skin blemishes is reduced. Additionally, this filter can also minimize the presence of haze caused by the bluish cast of daylight.

To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, each glass surface includes three layers of anti-reflection coating. These coatings also offer greater protection to the filter substrate and help it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters. This filter is constructed from optical glass for clarity and features an aluminum-alloy filter ring for durability while remaining lightweight.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can a polarizing filter fit over the UV?

A: It should. Most filters have a female and male thread. So essentially you could stack many filters on top of one another. Obviously though there'd be some loss.

Q: 2. Will this filter work well with DSLR's as well as digital camcorders?

A: Yes, Hoya UV filters are an excellent choice for DSLRs and digital camcorders.

Q: 3. Does this filter allow to directly photograph a solar eclipse without damaging de camera sensor?

A: No, an eclipse will certainly damage your sensor with this filter. You would need an strong nd filter at the very least, like a 25 stop nd.

Q: 4. Does ir cut only serve to reduce red from sunlight or is this also necessary in artifificial light like LED?

A: LED white lights typically remove unused spectrums to save on power so the difference under artificial light should be minimal. The largest gains will be under sunlight and UV/IR specific lighting. Unless the camera is full spectrum modified you will likely see very little difference under any light but almost none under modern artificial lighting. I would not buy an IR cut filter unless the camera is full spectrum modified as your camera already has one built in and UV filters are much less expensive. HTH.

Q: 5. Is this filter compatiable with Canon EF 24-70mm and 70-200 f/2.8L II USM Lens?

A: If you have the Canon EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens and the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens, you can mount these 77mm close up filters and go personal.

Q: 6. Read a few reviews saying the lens cap doesn't fit quite the same once the filter is on the lens? I'm getting it for a Sony 24-70 2.8 GM so I was hoping you can still put the cap on over the filter? Thanks for the help!

A: Yes the filter has a 82mm front thread, the same size as the original thread on the 24-70mm f/2.8 GM lens. The issue is that the thread on the filter is not as deep as the thread on the lens. Some lens caps are made for deep mounting. In that case it is advisable to get a shallow mount lens cap: https://bhpho.to/31qeltG

Q: 7. Can I use this with all canon cameras?

A: You can use this with all cameras on the planet, provided the lens accepts 55mm filters. the filter's diameter (55mm) must match that of the lens (filter diameter is mentioned in the front of the lens).

Q: 8. How is the weight of these close up filters? I want to use them (one at a time) on my Sony RX10 IV and am wondering if their weight is too great and would mess the lens at 600mm.

A: The following Hoya 40.5 filter will not work with Sony drop in filter system. The Hoya filters are to thick to fit in Sony drop in filter system.

Q: 9. Is this filter enough for taking photographs to a solar eclipse without damaging the camera?

A: No, you need a specialized solar filter. This is far from strong enough to aim at the sun for extended periods of time.

Q: 10. Hu guys, I'm after a UV filter for a Canon 16-35 f2.8 II. I think I've narrowed down my choices to: (a) Hoya 82mm Ultraviolet UV Haze HD (High Density) Digital FilterB&H # HOUVH82 ? Mfr # XHD82UV(b) Hoya 82mm HD2 UV Filter B&H # HOUVH282 ? Mfr # XHD2-82UVI'm just wondering what the main difference are between the two.Is it just a case of the HD2 being thinner? Is the Haze on the first one a reference to a colour/effect? Thanks for your help.

A: The Hoya HD and HD2 filters are the same except for their respective warranties. The HD filters has a one year warranty and the HD2 have a limited lifetime warranty. The Haze feature on the HD model is to reduce the hazy effect on a bright, sunny day.

[0.15 lb] I bought this filter after the regular one was producing flare. It is solid and results in slightly better images.

[72 mm] The Hoya is a nice addition to my new glass 50mm 1.8 Nikkor. No change in portrait photos and haven't done to many landscape photos to say if I notice any change. It's a strong filter that will protect your costly lens. I just leave mine on 24/7.

[72 mm] I have tried several other brands in an effort to save $$$, but it wasn't worth it. Hoya filter cost a bit more but deliver much more.

[Multi Coated] I had both, this HD filter and the cheaper Hoya HMC UV(C) filter. I bought another one of these HD filter because I found the cheaper one was more difficult to keep clean. My only complaint is that the front lens cap never sits quite as well on a lens with a filter, but this is not something unique to this filter, all the filters I have used are the same in that regard.

[Glass] Hoya has been my filter of choice for many years - these multicoated UV filters are well made and don't degrade the quality of my lenses. I highly recommend this HD UV filter
