This Linhof Large Leveling Head II with Panorama Platefrom Linhof Large Leveling Head II with Panorama Plateis designed to allow a camera to be incrementally rotated on a horizontal axis for capturing a sequence of images that are intended to be aligned and merged into a single panoramic photo. It features a built-in Linhof panorama plate with a dovetail guide, which is a panning platform with an Arca-type clamp that provides the ability to rotate a camera 360° according to clearly visible hatch marks engraved at 5° intervals. Depending on which camera and lens is placed on this leveling head, as well as the lens's focal length, those interval hatch marks can be used to ensure that images within a sequence sufficiently overlap to form a panorama. Cameras or panoramic head components with 1/4"-20 or 3/8"-16 female accessory threads can be placed on the panorama plate with a dovetail guide using the included Linhof 003693 50mm Dovetail Track Plate, which is an Arca-type compatible quick release plate.

The leveling head has a load capacity of 22 lb and is compatible with tripods or support systems that feature a 3/8"-16 mount. Loosening its control handle allows the leveling head's panorama plate to be rolled left or right, by up to 17°.

Two corner-facing, adjacent bubble levels built into the dovetail guide help to ensure that this leveling head is properly angled to provide a camera with a horizontal rotation axis. This is particularly useful for cylindrical panoramas where their individual component images must remain uniformly level to avoid the appearance of slanting upwards or downwards after they are aligned. Cylindrical panoramas that initially appear to be slanted can require extensive cropping to obtain parallel top and bottom sides. This can result in a dramatic loss of picture area and apparent height, causing unexpected as well as unwanted changes to image composition and content. By incorporating this leveling head within a support system configured for the process of creating panoramas, misaligned horizontal orientations relative to a panoramic subject can be precisely compensated for, preventing slanted images and maximizing their potential area, helping to preserve creative intent.

[360°] Speeds up process of levelling my camera on a tripod when it is not on perfectly level ground. Easy and quick. Does not move when I clamp it down. I only mention this because others may not have had the same experience.. Works for me.

[Yes] Most products from Linhof are insanely expensive and there is good reason;quality.
This head is slightly heavier than the older 3 way pan tilt, but the craftsmanship is outstanding. Rock solid. No sag when tightened. I use it for 4x5 and 6x6.

[360°] I've owned this base for years and it's been supporting a Manfrotto MVH500AH the entire time. Tripods have changed, but this combo has not. The Acratech base is well made, compact, and easy to use. Well worth the investment.

[Yes] This is the second Scratch Large Leveling Base to put on my second tripod. I like to shoot stitched panoramic and video with my DSLR. With this leveling base I don't waste time fiddling with my tripod legs to level the tripod, just put down the legs to something close to level, the use the 10 degree ALLB to level my ball head. The tightening knob works well to hold the ALLB in place. Then if I am shooting Panoramas or video the camera ball head stays level when panning.

[3/8"-16] Well this just made my life so much easier to get a level playing field instead of going up and down with tripod legs.... Acratech is solid and holds my gear steady as a rock.

[3/8"-16] This leveler works flawlessly!! Super quick to adjust, and a major time saver when setting up!! All the Kirk gear I've bought over the years is great quality and just bombproof!!

[3.7" (9.3 cm)] This is a heavy duty leveling base. Its base is large enough so the bubble level is easy to see when my Benro 3 Way Geared Head or my Acratech Long Lens Head is attached.

[3.5" (9.0 cm)] When I purchased this head I thought it would be the perfect panoramic device for my 4/3 Lumix. It almost was. Couple of stupid things: the vertical separations are 15 degrees, the horizontal separations are 30 degrees. The camera is oriented vertically so that with a 50 mm equivalent lens, the horizontal separations cannot be used! They should have done the opposite, more separations horizontally than vertically. The second thing is that at least vertically you cannot set the angle other than in the pre-sets. Couple of fixes:
- I altogether removed the screw to tighten the detents for the horizontal panning and taped over the hole with electrical tape against dust. Problem solved.
- An undocumented feature of this head is that you can just take apart the horizontal and vertical arms, flip over the silver washer (the one with the angle marks), put the arms back together, and the detents are gone. You'll see why when you look at the washer.
With these 2 changes, this is the perfect-enough pano arm. The only complaint I have left is that I have to use a separate bubble level for adjustment. Not a big deal.
Finally, I wish I had purchased the cr-30c, because I would just then leave the arca-swiss plate on all the time...

[Yes] I bought this head because I liked the integrated Arc_-style mount. I liked the RRS version as well, but don't love lever disconnects and the price with the plate was higher. I have several ball heads, but don't really need the full flexibility of a ball head as I shoot 0 or 90 degrees and have an L-bracket on my bodies. This head allows me to level it out on setup and then I can put any body on it--portrait or landscape--without having to re-level every time. Liked it enough to buy another for my larger tripod.
