This Linhof Leveling Head II with Panorama Plate & Quickfix Ifrom Linhof Leveling Head II with Panorama Plate & Quickfix Iis designed to allow a camera to be incrementally rotated on a horizontal axis for capturing a sequence of images that are intended to be aligned and merged into a single panoramic photo. It features a built-in Linhof panorama plate with an integrated Linhof Quickfix I Tripod Connector, which is a panning platform with a cam-lock quick release adapter. The panorama plate with Quickfix I tripod connector provides the ability to rotate a camera 360° according to clearly visible hatch marks engraved at 5° intervals. Depending on which camera and lens is placed on this leveling head, as well as the lens's focal length, those interval hatch marks can be used to ensure that images within a sequence sufficiently overlap to form a panorama. Cameras or panoramic head components with 1/4"-20 or 3/8"-16 female accessory threads can be placed on the panorama plate with Quickfix I tripod connector using the included Linhof 003875 Quickfix I Adapter Plate.

The leveling head has a load capacity of 22 lb and is compatible with tripods or support systems that feature a 3/8"-16 mount. Loosening its control handle allows the leveling head's panorama plate to be rolled left or right, by up to 17°.

Two built-in corner-facing, adjacent bubble levels help to ensure that this leveling head is properly angled to provide a camera with a horizontal rotation axis. This is particularly useful for cylindrical panoramas where their individual component images must remain uniformly level to avoid the appearance of slanting upwards or downwards after they are aligned. Cylindrical panoramas that initially appear to be slanted can require extensive cropping to obtain parallel top and bottom sides. This can result in a dramatic loss of picture area and apparent height, causing unexpected as well as unwanted changes to image composition and content. By incorporating this leveling head within a support system configured for the process of creating panoramas, misaligned horizontal orientations relative to a panoramic subject can be precisely compensated for, preventing slanted images and maximizing their potential area, helping to preserve creative intent.

This leveling head further benefits the use of Linhof Master Technika-series cameras when combined with a separately-available Linhof 003878 Quickfix I Adapter Plate for 35mm Cameras. When placed on the leveling head's tripod connector, a Quickfix I adapter plate for 35mm cameras can be adjusted to help maximize the ability to open the camera's baseboard throughout the leveling head's range of movement.

[3/8"-16] I use this between my tripod and a pan-tilt head. Leveling is fast, easy & locks solid. I would expect it holds much more than the factory rating. This is my second one since I often use a large Bogen and large Gitzo tripod depending on the type of work, and switching heads back and forth gets old fast. Anything that speeds up the job makes the customer happy when there may be many people working by the hour during a photo session. Using a leveling head really speeds up the process. The only drawback is the price, but it should last a lifetime (unlike most things). Rock solid and beautifully finished !

[3/8"-16] This is a very good leveling device with no protruding controls to get in your way. A knurled locking ring of slightly larger diameter than the device turns the friction lock easily and smoothly to firmly lock or unlock with a travel distance of around an inch. When unlocked there is still enough friction to keep it from flopping around loosely. It's easy to operate with either hand from almost any position, with heavy mittens as well as with your bare hands, and is a compact device that does a superior job.
From their website, vortexoptics.com, UNLIMITED LIFETIME WARRANTY FULLY TRANSFERABLE NO RECEIPT NEEDED. They also state that It will be repaired or replaced at no charge as necessary. The warranty does disallow cosmetic damage that does not hinder proper operation.

[360°] I have tried the RRS leveling base, the TA3 and their Universal model. I could never get them tight enough to keep from slipping once a tripod head and DSLR was put on top of either. It did not take much effort to induce slippage.

It takes much more deliberate effort to make this one move with the same equipment on top of it. More than I would encounter in normal use.

This one also is much easier to move, adjust and tighten compared to the RRS universal base with the wings (I do prefer the RRS model with the handle for adjusting).

The one thing that I do not like is the adjusting lever/lock is not captive. If it is loosened enough, it will fall out.

Physically, it does fit into the top of a RRS tripod with a 75mm hole, but the adjustment lever/lock is in the same space as the tripod apex/spider and too much material would have to be drilled out.

It attaches to the top of the tripod just fine, though. It has 3/8 inch holes with removable 3/8 to 1/4 reducing bushings installed.

[1.7 lb / 0.8 kg] Without a doubt, this is by far the best leveling head I have ever used. It was obviously made to very high standards and is a pleasure to use.I use this leveler on a Gitzo Series 5 CF tripod with my GigaPan Epic Pro panorama robot, and my CB Gimbal....

[360°] This leveling base is great because it does not have an knob off on the side. I bought a different one but I could not turn the knob, it would hit my tripod. This one you just loosen the ring and level and re-tighten it. Works much better than ones with the knop or handle on the side. It is all metal and feel well made.

[Cast Aluminum] Just getting into virtual tour photography and didn't want to spend a ton on a pano head. Using this one with a Nikon D7100 and it handles the weight of the camera and a Tokina 12-24 well. Little hard to decipher how to put it together but take a look at the website photo for ideas. Works great but you need a ball head and a sturdy tripod to use it properly.

[3.5" (9.0 cm)] Was looking for a way to mount a light weight movie camera on a steady platform attached to a car or truck window to shoot wildlife in Botswana and South Africa. Part if my requirements are that the tripod head can't be very tall or I won't be able to see what the camera is seeing. This mount gives me a way to stabilize and level the tripod head without adding much height. Works perfectly.
